Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon

Lenovo recently launched the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon and I was given the opportunity to try it out. The first thing that immediately caught my attention was how beautiful the packaging looked. I’m no stranger to the brand as I have used their products in the past and so my curiosity was at an all time high to check out this new laptop. Design

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon is made out of a high-strength carbon fibre for the lid and a magnesium-aluminium alloy for the bottom. At first glance, however, the top looks like it could be made out of a plasticky yet strong material. It’s even got a very plastic feel about it, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

It’s awfully light and that has to be my favourite part about this laptop. I’ve always hated having to lug my laptop around from meeting to meeting because of the weight. I’ve had to bring around my charger, my laptop, my notebook, my wallet and power-bank in my tote bags and carrying all these things around does not bode well for my shoulders that always ache after a long day of running about. The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon, however, is so light that I barely even felt it. Definitely a plus as it makes travelling about so much more convenient.

Open the lid and you’ve got your screen, webcam, backlit keyboard and trackpad. Pretty standard and basically like any other laptop. I found it interesting that the power on button was on the right side of the laptop, rather than with the keyboard as it usually is with most other laptops.

On the right side of the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon, you’ll see a camera switch to easily switch the camera on or off, the power button, and a USB-C port for the connector. On the left side, you’ll see the USB-C port for charging. Notice how there isn’t any audio jack port or even any port for HDMI cables or pendrives. That’s because it’s on the connector, which you’ll just have to remember to bring along with you. Personally I find that a slightly bit inconvenient, specially for the audio jack bit.

Display and Audio

At 13.3” I feel like it’s a pretty good screen size for a laptop. You can always get a monitor to enhance your workspace if you’d need a second screen, but I personally thought it was fine on its own. The colours on the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon were pretty vivid and seemed to have a slightly warmer touch when I was watching my shows. The maximum brightness of this laptop is not a glaring one, but it does take a minute to get used to. I also like that after the initial shock from the maximum brightness, it becomes pretty easy on the eyes.

The audio quality of the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon left much to be desired. I found the sound at maximum volume to be quite loud, but the bass felt lacking. Perhaps that’s something Lenovo will want to look into improving.

User Experience

My experience with the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon was significantly better than my failed attempt at using their phone many years ago. I mainly used the laptop for light work such as using Google Docs, surfing the net and watching Netflix. The brightness on the laptop was just nice for me. I did not experience any bouts of lagging while using the laptop, nor were there any loud sounds which I was very thankful for. It did get a little warm after being on for a couple hours, but it didn’t seem to affect anything much. The webcam works well enough, it was neither too dark nor too bright.

The keyboard was rather alright, not much noise and sound, perfect for co-working spaces. The trackpad was pretty regular, but I’d much rather use a mouse if one is available. You can easily zoom in by using your thumb and index fingers on the trackpad, pretty standard, but always a handy feature to have on hand.

Battery Life

After 9.5 hours of use with alternate brightness levels and breaks in-between

In terms of battery life, it is pretty good. I started using it at 8.30 am with a 100% charge. I attended a video call with the screen brightness at maximum and worked on some articles all the way till 12.30pm, the battery was at 84%. At this point, I closed the lid of the laptop and was away from it for about 2 hours. I came back around 2.30pm and continued working on some articles while having YouTube running in the background all the way until 5.30pm.

The battery life was now at 69%. I kept the lid off while i went about my day and returned at 6.30pm to binge watch some Netflix all the way until 10.30. By this point, my screen brightness is still at maximum capacity and I have some sites on Google left open. The battery percentage was down to 39% after my 14 hours of use. Without keeping the brightness at a maximum and binging on Netflix, I do think this laptop could have lasted me 2 days without needing a charge. It took the laptop 2 hours to reach a full charge from the 39%.

Conclusion

Overall, I’d say that the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon is a pretty decent laptop and I’d recommend this to anyone who’s looking for a light laptop to use for work or school. Just ensure that you’ve got either stable Wi-Fi or a Hotspot option in your data plan, and you should be good to go. Having a good pair of earphones will also enhance your user experience. The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon costs RM 4,095 and can be purchased at any authorised retail stores or Lenovo’s official website.
