Tamil Nadu delta districts record widespread rain, yellow alert for Chennai today

Chennai and its neighboring districts are bracing for heavy rainfall. The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal may soon become Cyclone Fengal. The system's slow movement has delayed its intensification. Heavy rain is forecast from November 28 to December 1. Coastal areas are on alert for potential very heavy downpours. Windy conditions are expected.

CHENNAI: The deep depression that lay 500km southsoutheast of Chennai on Wednesday evening is yet to develop into Cyclone Fengal, but it caused widespread rain in the Cauvery delta districts. Chennai and its neighbourhood didn’t get much rain, though it was windy.
“As the system moves northward, clouds around it may bring rain to the city. Lower latitude systems, like the one over the Bay, behave erratically. Land interaction caused the system to stay stagnant, but it may become a cyclone soon,” said N Senthamarai Kannan, director, regional weather forecasting centre.
Chennai and neighbour ing areas experienced windy weather on Wednesday as the system was stagnant near Sri Lanka and the clouds around it, which may bring rainfall, were away from the Tamil Nadu coast, he added.
Chennai may see heavy rain (yellow alert) on Nov 28 and Dec 1, and heavy to very heavy rain (orange alert) on Nov 29 and 30. Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengelpet may also experience heavy to very heavy spells from Nov 28 to Dec 1.
Heavy rain alert extended to Dec 1
The sluggish weather system over the Bay near Sri Lanka caused windy weather in the city and suburbs on Wednesday and extended heavy rainfall alert until Dec 1. Chennai may see heavy rain (yellow alert) on Nov 28 and Dec 1, and heavy to very heavy rain (orange alert) on Nov 29 and 30. Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet may also experience heavy to very heavy spells from Nov 28 to Dec 1.

As of Wednesday evening, the deep depression, which had moved at a speed of 3kmph in six hours and lay centred at 500km southsoutheast of Chennai, had yet to develop into Cyclone Fengal. It is delayed by high wind shear but may intensify in 12 hours.
The cyclone is, however, likely to weaken into a deep depression before it moves north-northwestwards and reaches north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry co asts as a deep depression around Nov 30 morning.
N Senthamarai Kannan, director, regional weather forecasting centre, said the city and neighbouring areas experienced windy weather on Wednesday as the system was stagnant near Sri Lanka and the clouds around it, which may bring rainfall, were away from the Tamil Nadu coast.
“As the system moves northward, clouds around it may bring rain to the city. Lower latitude systems, such as the one over the Bay, behave erratically. Land interaction caused the system to stay stagnant, but it may become a cyclone soon,” he said.
