NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address from the Red Fort on the 78th Independence Day, called for publicizing the punishment for those who commit atrocities against women. He said that these crimes should be investigated swiftly and that stringent punishment should be given to the perpetrators.
"Today from the Red Fort, I want to express my pain.
As a society, we will have to think seriously about the atrocities against our mothers, sisters and daughters. There is anger among common people because of this. I can feel that rage," he said.
"Crimes against women should be probed swiftly, and stringent punishment should be given to those who commit demonic acts, it is important to instil confidence in the society," he added.
The Prime Minister's comments come on the backdrop of the
rape and
murder of postgraduate trainee doctor in West Bengal's RG Kar Hosiptal.
He pointed out that while incidents of rape and atrocities against women receive widespread attention and discussion, the punishment meted out to the perpetrators often goes unnoticed, relegated to a small corner of the news.
"I would also like to say that when rapes and incidents of atrocities on women occur, it is widely discussed. But when a person of such monstrous tendency is punished, it is not seen in news but restricted to a corner,"
PM Modi said.
PM Modi added that there is a necessity of instilling fear in the minds of those who engage in such heinous acts.
"Need of hour is to widely publicise punishment for atrocities against women so that there is fear of consequences," he said.
"Those who commit such sins should know that they will be hanged. It is important to have that fear," PM Modi added.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case on Tuesday, following the directive issued by the Calcutta high court.
