Suryakumar Yadav more popularly known as ‘SKY’ made his IPL debut for the Mumbai Indians in 2012. He was purchased by MI in the 2011 auction for INR 10 Lakhs. He had a quiet few seasons for MI where he only played 1 match and did not bat. He was part of the 2011 CLT20-winning MI squad. It was in the 2014 IPL, that Suryakumar Yadav came into the limelight. He was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 for INR 70 Lakhs, scoring 164 runs in the title-winning campaign of KKR in 2014. Consistent performances for Kolkata up until 2017 made other franchises take notice. Mumbai Indians came calling in 2018 and he signed for MI in 2018 for INR 3.20 Crores.
Suryakumar was once again consistent with his batting for MI this time around with the 2023 season being his most productive in the Blue and Gold of MI, amassing 605 runs at a strike rate of 181.14 in 16 innings. He was also named the vice-captain of the franchise. Surya made his T20I and ODI debut against England in 2021. Bursting relatively late on to the international scene, he soon became the power-hitter in India’s white-ball squads. After winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, Surya has been named the T20I captain of India following the retirement of the World Cup-winning skipper Rohit Sharma.
