The Dallas Cowboys' head coaching position has become one of the hottest seats in the NFL. With Mike McCarthy's contract expiring at the end of the season and the team's disappointing performance, the possibility of a coaching change is looming large. Among the names being floated around, one name has generated significant buzz: Deion Sanders.
Deion Sanders to Dallas: A wild speculation or a reality?
As the current coach of the Buffaloes, Sanders is making waves in college football. With players like Travis Hunter and his son, Shedeur Sanders, propelling the team toward a potential College Football Playoff berth, speculation has arisen about Sanders’ next move. Hall of Famer Michael Irvin, speaking on The Herd, boldly claimed that Sanders "100 percent" would take the Cowboys' head coaching job—provided the team drafts his son, Shedeur, as quarterback. Irvin cited "great sources" for his confidence in this scenario.
Dallas’ current standing in the league may make this scenario plausible. A disappointing 3-7 record puts them in contention for a top-10 draft pick, currently projected as No. 9. While Shedeur Sanders is among the top quarterback prospects for the 2025 NFL Draft, acquiring him would require strategic maneuvering by the Cowboys. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith echoed Irvin's sentiments, suggesting Dallas should consider "tanking" the remainder of the season to secure Shedeur and hire Deion as head coach. Smith argued this combination could solve the Cowboys’ longstanding issues, calling it "Jerry Jones' master plan."
Despite the speculation, Sanders has remained resolute about his commitment to Colorado. Speaking to ESPN, he emphasized, “I’m happy where I am... I love it here, truly do.”
"I've got a kickstand down. You know what a kickstand is? ... That means I'm resting. I'm good, I'm happy, I'm excited. I'm enthusiastic about where I am. I love it here, truly do."
"It says a lot about what we plan on being and the stability that we're going to be here for a while," Sanders added. "We ain't going nowhere. We're about to get comfortable." His comments reflected a desire for stability, dismissing the notion of an imminent departure. For now, Sanders and his team are focused on their playoff push, while the Cowboys still have seven games left in their regular season.
