🔵 Understanding VC model, mindset and expectations, bootstrapping vs VC funding 💰, maintaining a healthy cap table, demystifying founders’ dilution, preparing a data room, structuring exit strategies and enhancing 🚀 startup investment readiness were the key modules covered in the capacity-building workshop led by Alternative Business Capital - ABCapital team Anis BORCHANI and Hela JELASSI for Innov'i - EU4Innovation partner SSO (incubators, ESO,…).   We had also the pleasure to invite VC investors from the MENA region to share their insights into what they seek in a startup to be VC-backed. One surprising takeaway 💡 was when one of the VCs shared an unconventional question they often ask: 𝑊ℎ𝑦 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑𝑛’𝑡 𝑤𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑢𝑝? ; rather than asking why they should invest. He explained that a VC typically reviews between 10 to 30 pitch decks per a week: 10% of those are hot deals, with VCs competing for a spot on their cap table. The bottom 90% are average deals, reviewed based on an elimination process. 🔵 As we celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace #IDSDP, this week, we take a moment to spotlight FOVEA Sports, our portfolio company led by Heykel Megannem, the former Tunisian Handball Champion; which has been supported by our partner SEAF through an investment transaction.   Beyond their recreational nature, #sports have been linked to improved physical and mental health, as well as youth empowerment. Furthermore, studies have proven that sports play a crucial role in fostering #inclusive societies and serve as a key driver for economic growth. Recognizing the economic and social positive impact of sports, FOVEA's founders, Heykel Megannem and Dora MEGANNEM DJEMAL, established a group of companies in 2016 operating within the sports industry encompassing diverse business lines, including youth training academies, sponsorship deals, sporting events and athleisure retail. Acknowledging the #gender gap and stereotyping in the sports sector, FOVEA Group has been actively addressing this bias by enhancing the representation of female talent across its various business lines, ensuring that over 50% of its senior management and coaches are women. Moreover, Fovea Sports, the youth sports branch of the Group, has contributed to enhancing the well-being of youth, fostering the emergence of the next generation of professional athletes in handball and basketball, and ensured efforts to recruit diverse trainees, with over 30% of trainees being female. In conclusion, despite its undeniable positive #impact, sports remain underutilized and face challenges to attract #capital. Recent estimates indicate that sports still only contribute to 0.5% of African GDP, compared to the global average of 2%.
