Curious about what makes ROS2 a significant upgrade from ROS1? ROS2 introduces improved real-time capabilities that enable more responsive and deterministic execution, essential for complex systems where timing constraints are critical. This is a substantial upgrade from ROS1's limited real-time support. One of the major changes is the adoption of DDS (Data Distribution Service) as its middleware. Unlike ROS1’s custom transport layer, DDS provides robust support for distributed systems, better scalability, and reliable performance across diverse networking environments. Security is another key area where ROS2 excels. It includes built-in mechanisms for authentication, encryption, and access control, addressing the security vulnerabilities present in ROS1 and ensuring that your data and communications are protected. The modular design of ROS2 allows for easier updates and maintenance, as its architecture is more flexible and component-based compared to ROS1. With ROS2, the launch system has been revamped to use Python instead of XML. This new system provides greater flexibility and ease of use, making it simpler to configure and manage complex setups.
