Voight and Woods’ back-and-forth battle came to an end during Chicago P.D.‘s Season 5 finale, with rather tragic consequences for one third party.
Following the prison stabbing last week, Olinsky is taken to a hospital. Meanwhile, Voight is about to confess to killing Bingham, on the record, to free his friend when he gets a call. He rushes to the hospital and tells a barely conscious Olinsky, “You be strong. You hang in there.” To his credit, Olinsky replies, “I got this.” But sadly, he doesn’t. A passing doctor tells Voight that his pal didn’t make it. The Intelligence boss then informs his unit, who have expectedly emotional reactions to the loss. Halstead storms out of the room, while Ruzek comforts a crying Burgess, who is later tasked with packing up Olinsky’s desk. (Surely, there’s some underling who could have handled that?)
In the aftermath, Voight funnels all his energy into finding out who killed Olinsky, and even goes so far as to “interrogate” an inmate in a prison supply closet. When Antonio is horrified to see the prisoner beaten bloody — Olinsky wouldn’t want this, he says — Voight claims that the other man tried to choke him with his handcuffs. The tension between the two grows after Voight finds the person who ordered the kill and shoots him dead. Antonio arrives right after the gunfire, so he doesn’t know for sure what happened. Voight says the man was reaching for a gun, but the witnesses on the neighboring rooftop exclaim that Voight shot him in cold blood. After the higher-ups call in both detectives, Antonio notes that he can’t confirm or deny what Voight did, which ruffles Ruzek’s feathers. As far as Ruzek sees it, Voight took out a career criminal who was responsible for their friend’s death, so how can he not support that?
As for Woods, he finds a witness of his own, who claims to have seen Voight and Bingham together the night of the murder. However, the witness wants $20,000, which Woods gives to her on the condition that she exaggerate what she saw to seal the case. Later, Voight tells Woods that he doesn’t understand the difference between dirty and necessary. While Woods hurts innocents for his own ambition, Voight bends the rules to put away the truly evil and dangerous. Then Voight asks about the witness, even mentioning her by name. Yes, he set up Woods, who is arrested by Internal Affairs for bribing the fake witness. But the victory is bittersweet, as Olinsky is still dead, and the episode ends with an emotional Voight drinking, punching a door and breaking down as he cries, “I’m sorry, Al. So sorry.”
On the topic of the heartbreaking death, showrunner Rick Eid told TVLine, “From a creative perspective, it was a decision that evolved organically from the ongoing storyline between Voight and Woods. The writers and I kept coming back to this idea that Voight’s decision to kill Bingham should cost him something. Over time, we landed on the notion that Olinsky should be the person to pay for Voight’s sin because Voight admired and loved him so much.”
“From a business perspective, however, this was an extremely difficult decision,” Eid continued. “[Longtime series regular] Elias [Koteas] is a terrific actor and a good person. He’s also been an important part of the show since the very beginning. So this part of the process was really challenging. But Elias handled the news like a true professional and remained committed to the show and his character until the final shot. We will miss him dearly.”
P.D. fans, how are you feeling after Olinsky’s demise? Grade the season ender below, then hit the comments with your thoughts.
Yeah….probably shouldn’t have just shot the guy in cold blood…..that’s what got him into this mess with Woods in the first place. I watched all season but it seems like a lot of the magic went away when Sophia Bush left.
We don’t know he shot him in cold blood. We saw him shoot, but we didn’t see whether the guy actually reached or not.
.
No doubt that will carry over into next season.
Dude come on!!
If you believe that guy was really reaching for a gun, there is some beachfront property in Omaha I’ll sell to you cheap.
I’m saying I’ve been watching TV long enough to know that there’s a reason they didn’t show us whether he reached or not.
Agree with Cobra, how it actually went down was conceiled from us to give us a storyline for next season. Both sides of the story could be true, the workers were too far away to see if he was reaching for the gun – which was actually there, Voigt didn’t have time to plant it. But we also know that Voigt does execute people who have hurt him.
Exactly what I’m saying. I’m not saying he didn’t shoot him in cold blood…only that there’s a reason we weren’t shown what happened.
Happened to me to, it’s an auto reflex. You awaken to find a tube as big as a garden hose shoved down your throat.
You automatically try and pull it out…
He may be an idiot, but not cause of tat
Sorry I disagree. I love that finally this season other characters got some focus instead of Lindsey drama taking up the majority of the season like we had for all the previous seasons. We got episodes with focus on Atwater, Antonio, Halstead, Ruzek, Hayley and Burgess.
Totally Agree! I liked Lindsay, but this season the show was more balanced, Upton fit in. This was ‘Chicago PD’s best season IMO
I agree
I. AGREE AS WELL!!! I am still holding out for Olinsky to NOT be dead. He told Voight – “I got this” and I was so sure it was part of the sting to catch Woods. Why WHY WHY??? Did they have to write him off?
I agree there is a way to bring Al back we haven’t seen him dead there has been no funeral. It sucks he’s off the show
I’m mad they killed him off! Can’t they make it like the day times soaps and bring him? Pretend it was to expose Woods
I hope so as well
Maybe he’s not dead!!!
I agree. Bring Al back. I was a hoax to get Woods.
Chicago PD, is on of the top police stories. It was hardbreaking and a surprise to see Al, killed off and Lindsey gone we will see. What i like to see if Al, went into hiding and reappeared in the show
I am not going to stop watching. Its the best. But, he will be missed him and Voight is a team.
I agree. It would be nice to see her again though maybe she can come back for a visit.
True even thou I like her & miss her
Agreed!!! I was glad to see such a mix of plots and characters. Didn’t seem one sided as before.
True, good point.
I agree Lindsey needed to go
If by magic you mean how she constantly whined about her insufferable mommy issues and ordered Jay like a lapdog then yes it did and thank God it did.
🙄 you’re certainly entitled to your opinion.
Please every second of every episode was of her tiresome ‘mom was horrible’ speeches or constant covering for her problematic screw ups nobody else got ample screentime Jay was the exception and it was only for her to plow him. Hell it wasn’t until only this season there was mention of Kevin raising his brother and sister since season 2.
Wow, I’m like totally convinced now! Thank you so much for correcting me!
Thank you for your succinct observations and speaking up for Kevin. I never could figure out what unbalance was going on. You are right. We have been missing a whole layer with Kevin’s story falling off the grid.
I heard the real reason Bush left was because she couldn’t stand working with Jason Beghe,
I heard that too and I think it’s really unfortunate. I felt the season lacked a lot of the camraderie and humor it had in previous seasons.
Evidently Bush wasn’t the only one. This is from Variety:
.
“Jason Beghe, the star of NBC’s “Chicago P.D.,” has been investigated for ongoing anger management issues.
.
NBC launched the investigation after learning last year that there were multiple complaints about Beghe’s behavior on set, with cast and crew complaining about anger issues, volatile behavior, and offensive comments, sources tell Variety.
.
“People felt disrespected, he yelled a tremendous amount, he had a quick fuse and when it was set off it was unpleasant for everyone around him,” says a source.
.
The issue was brought to NBCUniversal human resources, a formal complaint was filed, and an investigation were launched. As a result of that, Beghe faced consequences that included written reprimands in his file. He was assigned a coach to help him deal with his anger management issues, and is still in treatment.”
I think it was a great season. They became the tough squad they are supposed to be.. As much as I like Sofia Bush it became tiresome with it being mostly her issues.. So sad about Olinsky..
Scientology will do that to you.
Have not missed Sophia Bush at all. Linstead and Voight got all the juicy stories while the rest got scraps here and there. There were too many great actors to focus on ONLY her and her interactions with her toy boy and surrogate father. So many missed opportunities for character development that has finally be righted this season.
I agree. And now there’s no Olinsky.
Agree about Bush
Fantastic.
On one hand I loved it, on the other I hate Olinsky was killed. Truly a lovable character. Voight has lost every close person to him.
I am actually hoping the writers show us a twist and Al Olinsky is really still alive and it was part of the whole plan to make sure he was safely out of prison and maybe in hiding while Voight had to do what he had to do by setting up Woods to finally keep him from constantly going after Voight…and remember viewers— we were also never shown what actually happened with how the man that killed his son really died and who buried him etc etc…you never know what will happen especially with a great show like this and Dick Wolf as a producer!
Yes! I agree! I think he is still alive! That character is needed for balance! He was so mysterious in his quiet way!
Olinsky is my favorite character on this show, it’s going to be so strange without him. I look forward to seeing what Elias does next.
Unfortunately they didn’t give him much to do this season. He was pretty much absent the whole first half of the season. They have too many people working in that one squad unit and the actors don’t have enough to do. They needed to thin the herd and it’s sad that Elias was the one they chose. The squad still could lose one or two to make it manageable. The show started off with the Intelligence Unit and Patrol cops, since then they’ve moved everyone up to Intelligence. The change in showrunners didn’t help this season either, as everything was uneven. Needs more focus next season.
And don’t forget the wonderful Amy Morton. She’s a fantastic sergeant too.
Beghe must’ve done a lot of yelling on set. That’s why he’s always hoarse.
His voice is scratchy because years ago he was in an accident and intubated. When he woke up, he pulled the tube out on his own, permanently damaging his vocal chords
Idiot!
I gree with you boreanazfann, Olinsky was
Olinksy was the heart of the show for me, he will be greatly missed. I wish Voight would have been eliminated and Trudy promoted in his position. I can’t believe the tolerance that NBC has for “men behaving badly”. Strong actors have come and gone and Jason Beghe remains.
He’s on probation, He’d better shape up. This is going into his permanent file and he may not have an easy job getting another role after this series is over. The studios don’t like to hire actors who have a track record of being difficult to work with,
I love Trudy’s character development over the years.
I loved how it ended but I hate that Al is gone. I always felt that his character complimented the whole team and was so authentic! There is no way he can be replaced! I’m not sure I can keep watching. Voight is the only older person now! Who knows… Maybe they faked his death and he will be back!
If you go to the Chicago PD page on Facebook, you will find a picture of the cast for next season. Olinsky isn’t in the picture.
Argg crying and Yeah Woods Sucked !
LOL I knew that witness was a plant.
Yep. She was too clean and put together to be a homeless junkie.
I don’t like Voight…but I do like Olinsky. Bad move killing him off
I agree. I wish they would get rid of Voight. His character is morally corrupt and not a good lead for the show.
Thank you. He should be In prison and it drives me nuts that they try to justify the illegal things he does.
And you should move your bleeding heart butt to Chicago and then maybe you would understand. Let me guess it’s wrong to torture and do whatever is necessary to protect us from terrorists. You obviously have no clue how bad it is with these horrible gangs. They have no conscious, no soul, no heart and they are pure evil just like terrorists. You do what you have to do to take them down. Just like Voight. Stop watching the show you are way to liberal for it.
Excuse me morally corrupt? You must be kidding. It is the gang banging dope pushing murdering innocent people scumbags who are corrupt. He does what he has to do and I don’t blame him one bit. Ask any real Chicago pd and I am sure they will agree. These monsters are not human they kill babies and children and could care less. They have no hearts or souls so do WHATEVER is necessary to take them down. And he killed the scumbag who killed his son and I would do the same if it was my son he killed. You need to take a trip to Chicago then maybe you will get a clue. They are terrorists and deserve to be treated as such. Chicago PD is a great show and shows how it really is for the innocent people who live there and the scum who have wrecked havoc on the city.
Agree!! He’s a dirty cop.
On a side note I can’t stand the way he chews his mouth all the time. Not a very good actor
Never watching again
This will be the second of the Chicago’s that I’m giving up, between Fire becoming the Gabby Dawson Hour and PD killing off Olinsky, the bad writing and unbalanced dynamics of those two shows, they’re not worth it anymore, which is unfortunate because they were both great once upon a time.
OMG I thought it was just me thinking it was the Gabby hour!!! God she’s really really annoying me. She never learns her lessons.
Does that mean you also won’t be commenting on it? (said hopefully…)
why Al he was awesome
They should have pretended he died to keep him safe. Al is a big part of show. Not a good ending, killing off Al was a mistake.
I was hoping that they Olinsky wasn’t really killed off, that he needed to go undercover and comes back. Jason Beghe needs to go! Clayne Crawford was fired from Leathal Weapon for simular off screen behavior.
Supposedly Beghe is in an anger management program. A lot of people on the show complained about him. Apparently he is very difficult to work with or get along with.
We LOVED Al! We can’t believe you killed him off! He was perfect & the perfect best friend for Voight! They always knew they could count on the other one! We were heartbroken when you let him die! That was terrible! BUT………. we were so GLAD that Hank& the other guy got Woods (or whattver his name is). He deserved it! He was a scumbag!!!!! Sure will be glad if they throw the book at him!!!!
I think al should have lived but all in all best chicago P. D. Ever
I would’ve graded it awesome had my man Olinsky not been killed off. I was watching the show through tear stained eyes. Omg
This is tv hes a great actor you couldve done something different!
Voight blames everyone for Al’s death except himself. True, he didn’t actually kill him but if he had manned up & taken responsibility for the murder, instead of letting Al take the fall, Al wouldn’t have been in jail. I liked Al but he was a fool to take the fall for Voight.
I agree with this comment although I do think Voight does feel guilt as shown in the last few minutes on the rooftop. I actually thought he might jump! He will have to live with Al’s death the rest of his life, as it should be because he is, in the end, responsible.
I won’t like Chicago PD now because Olinsky was killed off of the show!!
I have admited Koteas’ work, especially his turn in “The Desperate Hours.” Wanted to see him remain, but I understand that scripts and story arcs often evolve is unexpected ways.
This just completely sucks…other ways to keep him in the show and make Voight pay. Five loyal seasons but will not watch again.
Right on! They could have made Voight pay by so many other ways, with Olinsky being there to help Voight’s redemption. It could have been so upbeat to have the faithful friend (and fantastic actor) by his side. Lousy writing.
Ok, list the ways they could have made Voight pay. There were really only two options: confess and go to jail OR suffer with guilt for letting Olinsky take the fall. Either way, one or the other had to go to jail or die for there to be any payback. A slap on the wrist would not cut it. Voight committed murder and they had to show some consequence for that. To get off scot free is unrealistic and bad message. It was not lousy writing, it was actually very good because they did not take the easy way out. Sorry that Olinsky was the collateral damage!
Well, the amount of time they spent with Al this episode, they could have just killed Erin instead.
There’s also the option of having had Al forced to retire due to disability, sometimes and quite possibly a more severe consequence than death. To limit it to two options is the same kind of writing that led us down this path in the first place – limited and stereotypical.
Kill Erin instead? That would realistically require Sophia Bush to return and that was not happening. She has already signed a contract with another company and made it clear she was finished with the show. As much as I would prefer Al relaxing on a beach somewhere, that would not be much of a consequence for Voight. Unexpected things happen on shows, including the loss of a character. It’s what makes programs interesting and keeps our attention. Actors know that going in. Elias is a good actor. He will find work and I heard he already had something line up. Mourn his loss but I still don’t think it was lousy writing. It took guts to shake things up in a drastic manner.
No, it wouldn’t require Sophia to come back – Criminal Minds killed off Gideon without Mandy Patinkin coming back, for example. I also referenced the amount of time Al was present in this episode – less than a minute, in which his sole role was ‘die’. Open the episode where we left off with Voight, and he ignores the call because it’s a New York number, and then he’s telling everyone Erin is dead and Al will be next if they don’t find the person who did it. Erin is like a daughter to Hank; given what he did to make her safe, the fact that she wasn’t and it’s on him would be just as devastating, if not more. Meanwhile, the episode has an actual threat in it, rather than a pissweak out-of-nowhere rando case that resolves in half the time to make room for the Hank-Voight-Serves-Up-Vengeance parade.
Alternately, switch up the order of scenes, and part of the deal with Osha was for Al to ‘die’ in order to honeytrap Woods. Al ends up in Witsec and he’s out there but out of Hank’s control (Hank has to trust someone else for once, cue angst), and he has to keep that secret from everyone.
Just jumping to ‘we need drama, let’s kill someone’ is simplistic, and it was not handled well here.
Some valid points and good ideas, kallI. And I agree the random Olinsky killed because of a previous drug bust was weak. Also tired of the repetitious Voight serves vengeance parade. Good one!
I know I stopped watching this season before they got really into this storyline, but I think avenging his death is exactly what Olinsky would have wanted. Whatever it took. He was old school like Voight. He often helped out Voight a lot on the shadier side of police work. Now if Antonio had been the one who was killed, then someone else could say that this isn’t what Antonio would have wanted and they’d be exactly right.
In the earlier seasons, they at least showed Olinsky struggling with his conscience when they did the “shadier” things while Voight always said he slept like a baby. Remember when Olinsky stopped Voight from drowning Pulpo by saying not this time, Hank. But the last few seasons, the writers made it seem like they were always in it together, no guilt, so you are probably right. Antonio has a strong conscience and you are right, he would not want that! I actually admire him for that even though some fans are ragging him.
I think they are setting Voight and Antonio up for a major conflict next season. Good cop vs bad cop.
Really bummed! Al Olinsky was my favorite character, and was the only reason I watched Chicago P.D. Loved his calm and laid back demeanor.
Don’t they just love to dump on us viewers! The runners and writers really have issues.
Nooo!!!! and the husband says, “Nooo!!!” Rotten writing.
I can’t believe he’s gone! I’m going to miss Olinsky he was one of my favorite on the CPD. I cried like a baby and I will continue to watch CPD I love the series.
This show is just not fun anymore. The husband says, “I think this is just Dick Wolf’s policy. He doesn’t kill off the right people.”
And Wolf has set it up, saying over and over again, that Voight ONLY goes after the guilty baddies. Now, he is saying in interviews that Voight needed to pay or some such. Give me a break!
Would of been an A if they didn’t kill. Olinsky off. Didn’t like that, he should of survived.
Bring Al back. A passing doctor told Hank so why couldn’t that have been a mistake and they can bring Al back. No one saw Al after surgery. There is still a way to bring him back.
I still don’t believe Al is dead. I think they made a mistake and it was someone else. Hank didn’t see the body; Al’s wife wasn’t there. Hank was just waiting outside the ER surgery room and grabbed the first person he saw and asked about the man back there . . . the doctor said he didn’t make it. I think he was talking about someone other than Al. At least I hope that is the case!
