Warning: The following contains spoilers for Wednesday’s Chicago Med premiere.
One of Chicago Med‘s docs is hanging up their white coat: In Wednesday’s Season 4 premiere, Dr. Sarah Reese left the hospital — and her portrayer Rachel DiPillo has departed the NBC drama after three seasons as a series regular, TVLine has confirmed.
Sarah’s decision to continue her psych residency elsewhere came after the discovery that her father is a serial killer and that Dr. Charles almost let him die.
“She had such a close relationship to Charles, and she feels betrayed by him and just can’t stay,” executive producer Diane Frolov explains. Adds EP Andrew Schneider: “[After] the trauma of her father doing such terrible things, she feels like she needs to go someplace else.”
That said, “we would welcome Rachel coming back,” Schneider continues. “We love the actress. She did a great job in the premiere. And if we can find, down the line, a storyline that would involve her, we would bring her back.”
Elsewhere in the season opener, Natalie accepted Will’s proposal — but only after thinking it over for a week. Could that spell bad news for the newly engaged couple? “He certainly reads a lot into that,” Frolov says.
For her part, star Torrey DeVitto thinks her character was right to take her time. “Natalie’s been married before, and she lost her husband,” she explains. “That’s nerve-wracking to fall madly in love and to think you’re going to be with somebody forever, and then they die, and then to potentially go through that all over again. There’s going to be some reservations — more nervousness than reservations.” Plus, Will popped the question after a fight with his girlfriend, so Natalie “wanted to make sure that he wasn’t just asking by way of freaking out that [she] actually was going to leave, and that he was asking for the right reasons.”
Although Will and Nat overcame that hurdle, it’ll hardly be smooth sailing for the pair in Season 4. “He will be forced to keep a secret from Natalie, which hurts their relationship,” Schneider teases.
What did you think of the episode? Grade it via the poll below, and stay tuned to TVLine for lots more Med scoop!
Ever since people started speculating her departure, I knew that was the end of Med for me. Interesting how they can come up with storylines for a character that most viewers can’t stand, but write off a character has been a fan favorite. Yes, this is me being bitter.
I watched this show because of Dr. Reese and her relationship with Dr. Charles. I loved seeing them solve cases together. Even in season 1 I would get so excited when I saw an episode where they worked together. I know many fans hated the season 3 story line involving the two of them and many fans are upset over this. I am also bitter.
Vivian, Naomi, – I agree with both of you… I really, really am bothered by her being let go. Fingers-crossed that she gets picked up on something really good (and is given a role that is respected and appreciated).
Also, all this talk about Halstead & Nat not having chemistry and nothing in common, but hardly anything is said about Yaya & Brian Tee’s relationship?!?!?! Now THEY are total opposites! They also disagree on almost everything!!!
She was the best character on the show. So disappointed.
Really? She is hands down my least favorite character on the show. I can’t stand her attitude and am thrilled to see her gone. I also am underwhelmed with her acting, so if be surprised to see her on another show anytime soon.
I wholeheartedly agree with you Judy. Every 5 min she changed from hating Charles then liking Charles, was very judgmental and throughout the 3 seasons didn’t know what she really wanted to do. Yes part of that is the writers but most of it her acting imo. I am glad to see her off the show.
I agree least favourite character. She wasn’t until the business with the way she treated the guy from the lab in season 1.
So disappointed that you were so political on the immigrant story will not be watching you again
Still disappointed in Natalie & Halstead’s relationship. They have no chemistry!!!
And nothing in common.
I totally agree 100%, I hate these two together. I think Natalie and Connor would make a much better couple.
I wish they would kill the Halstead/Natalie story. He whines and pouts and when he does it enough, she gives him his way. Plus, they have 0 chemistry. It is so completely forced. I wish she would get together with Conner, or they would at least explore it for a little. I always enjoy the scenes they have together.
I agree 100% with everything here.
Yes yes yes!
I completely agree. I was thinking that they are a thing at the beginning of the show when they had a moment at the hospital’s rooftop. I always enjoy episodes where Connor and Natalie work together.
Why is it being narrated? It’s ANNOYING!!!
I like the actress, but the convoluted, odd Reece plot has been so utterly bizarre. I’m kinda relieved. Hopefully, she’ll take a different role in another show,
They could have made adjustments to the character and given her a much better storyline, especially now that her manipulative Dad died…
Did you watch the entire episode? Dad is not dead. He’s in a jail infirmary room.
Wow, when I read the headline that someone leaves I said to myself as long as its not Sarah or Dr. Charl. By far I found theur storylines regarding mental health the most interesting. Its a shame.
Give me Rhodes and Manning instead dangit!
I think the show is trying to hit too many birds with one stone as they have too much plot and added too many characters when in fact they can play the story with the original casts themselves. Kinda too much for me. I had high expectations with the season premiere but it was not met unfortunately.
I wonder if Ava slept with Conner’s dad to get him to stay. I bet she did. That’s gonna be good to find out later in the season.
curious bout that too
I bet she did and I hope it does come out and Connor kicks her to curb for good! I was bummed that her character is back. Connor deserves so much better than her. Pair him up with Sylvie from Fire!
Great idea!
i was curious about that too, if she slept with connors dad. I think she did, when connor drove away in his porsche , her face changed.
I wonder if Ava slept with Conner’s dad to get him to stay. I bet she did. That’s gonna be good to find out later in the season.
Bring Sarah back!
I’m so glad there are finally consequences for something Dr Charles has done, and I’m glad Sarah has gone off to somewhere better, so sick of her drama and Dr Charles feeding off it.
But, is it just me or are these ‘recaps’ missing at least half of each episode? It’s not really a recap if it’s missing entire characters/plots.
I thought the same thing after watching it. Where was Dr. Rhodes story line?
If I am not mistaken, when Dr. charles talked to Reese’s dad, he admitted that HE TOO is a psychopath!.
It was good premiere.
I believe Manstead is not going make it down the aisle.
Dr Charles and Haywood is not over. Dr Charles is going dark!!!
Ava’s character is growing on me. I hope she didn’t sleep with Connor’s father. I don’t believe that she will.
I want Chexton back. I love Ethan and April. They have a cuteness together. I am waiting to see.
Sharon and Gwen , I am loving it. Battle of the Titans
Solid premiere !!!
I will miss Sarah
Wow, so much negativity in the comments.
I for one liked the premiere, even though we lost Dr. Reese.
But for me it’s easier in ensemble shows like this.
And I LOVE Manstead! I’m happy they are engaged and fear for the secret that’s coming between them.
I thoroughly enjoyed the episode. Sorry to see Dr. Reese leaving. Awesome that Dr. Rhodes is going to be more hands on in the ED heading his own heart trauma center. Plus, there won’t be that constant competition between he and Ava. If they don’t make it, will her story lines be necessary? Just a thought…. Happy about Manning and Natalie. What is that secret. She already knows he cheated on her during their so called break. And, I like Dr. Choi and April together. All in all a very promising season ahead. Now, it’s time to watch the Dawsey break up on Chicago Fire.
So happy Dr. Reece left – I love the show but her character really started annoying me last season!
I’m with you on this one.
Hey TVLINE – if you are inflicting the Cloudflare spam popups, STOP!!!!!!!
Am I the only one who got a serious case of the heebie jeebies with Dr. Charles character this episode. Him talking about a psychopath being able to get used to anything an then that look….the look of I’m living proof look. Like this whole letting him die thing has triggered something deep in his mind an he snapped. Possible other trigger being Sarah leaving. The shots of him drinking and snapping on the med student. I feel like this dude is about to do something crazy…like go on a murdering spree or become a serial killer. Or maybe he has always been one. His convos with Sarah’s dad an the way he looks an talks is just very weird to me. Something just seemed off…like my dark crazy o-meter alarm bells started going off on high alert.
I really hope you’re wrong, because I like Dr. Charles. Doesn’t he have depression? I think his condition is acting up with all the loss he has experienced. First, his daughter leaves and now his surrogate daughter.
Aw, I liked Sarah. Natalie’s the one that drives me nuts. But that’s because of the writing, not the actress.
Reese went downhill the last couple of seasons but the character I was really hoping would leave is Bekker.
#FreeConnor
Sarah was my favorite. :(
Sorry to see Dr. Reese leaving. The dynamics between her and Dr. Charles was so genuine. Halsted and Nat have zero dynamics….
Please bring her back! Dr. Reese is one of the reasons I watch the show. I have enjoyed watching her gain confidence and strength in her role so please find a way to bring her back…maybe she will forgive Dr. Charles and they can cultivate a professional relationship again!
I loved Dr Reese… want her back
