The Voice‘s Adam Levine Claims It Would Have Been ‘Too Far Beneath Me’ Not to Play Unfair for Reagan Strange

Play favorites much, Adam Levine? When The Voice coach’s two remaining team members, Reagan Strange and DeAndre Nico, found themselves in the Bottom Three with Team Blake Shelton’s Dave Fenley in Tuesday’s Top 10 Results Show, the former was too ill to sing for the Instant Save. Yet viewers were still allowed to cast their votes for her. Which was bad enough… and then Adam went and made it so. Much. Worse.
When the Maroon 5 frontman should’ve been discussing DeAndre’s performance with host Carson Daly, he instead spent most of his time campaigning for votes for Reagan. Yes, Adam expressed his typical confusion as to why DeAndre was in the Bottom Three and mentioned that he’d sung “like a champ.” But the emotional plea that he made on Reagan’s behalf was unreal.
“There is an unbelievably talented little girl right now who is not able to fight for her position on this show,” he said, mentioning that he has two daughters himself. “The thought of breaking her heart by not urging everyone to give this girl a shot to go and redeem herself next week would be too far beneath me.”
Whereas apparently torpedoing DeAndre — who’d actually gotten on that stage and sung for the Save after landing in the bottom with a Bruno Mars cover that Adam had stuck him with — was not too far beneath him. “I gotta fight for my girl,” Adam insisted. “I’ve gotta make sure that I represent her properly in this moment because she didn’t have a chance to use her voice tonight, so I’m gonna use it for her as well as I possibly can to make sure she can make it next week.”

Horrified at the rudeness of Adam Levine….to Deandre who sang perfectly. He has a gorgeous voice. Levine has a history of throwing contestants under the bus. He gets crushes on people and ruins others chances. Remember Josh West? Great singer…..made him go home too soon too. Adam should leave the show. He’s biased and an egomaniac.

I think a competition should be only if u perform. He did not help his other team member it was rude I will not be watching the show anymore. It is not a fair completion if she could not perform she should have been elimated and came back next year and sung for her spot after all that is what the show is

Kelly even tried to put a bandaid on what Adam did, she recognized it. Her and the other judges are great!

Kelly sang while sick. Other contestants have in the past too, one of Blakes if I remember correctly and she won! It’s gonna be their job they can’t just cancel all the time for little this or that when thousands of people and schedules depend on it. In the past, or other competitions, she would’ve been disqualified.

Poor DeAndre sang amazingly and gave it his all for a chance to go forward and he was betrayed by his own coach! You could see the shock & hurt in his eyes.
Being sick was one thing. Being in the audience in a bathrobe was as distasteful as Adam’s betrayal!
I agree with others, if you are too sick to take the stage, then you are out. I honestly think she knew she had done a bad job the night before and she couldn’t stand the thought of rejection & it probably did make her sick. What Adam said will hurt her more than if he’d kept his mouth shut. I personally think she’s out already!
I agree with Angelique. If she couldn’t sing she should not have been considered. They always say it on the voice and every other singing competition. You have to deal with it, it comes with the job. You can not just cancel a show because you don’t feel well, you go out and give it your all. So I think the entire show is to blame for this, not just Adam. She should never even have been a consideration as she did not even sing. Her time should have been done.

Everyone should think back I believe it was this season that a gentleman I believe his name was Cameron couldn’t perform because of something happened sickness something in his family I’m not really sure but he came back the next show and continued on until he was cut so why is this even an argument I still say people are not in control with what happens in their personal life and cutting them from the show just because of something unexpected like sickness or a family problem should not disqualify them

She did not sing. She needs to be gone. She actually did not sing well. That song Adam chose for her was to much for her. And he chose a Brono Mars song for Deandre. Adam needs to be gone too. I’m sorry but my last comment was not Jennifer but Kimberly who said something on the 6th and I do not believe that getting sick should be a reason that you kick someone off of a team or a show I have children of my own they played ball soccer they play tennis when they got sick they couldn’t play but they did not get thrown off the team just because they could not play you don’t play around when someone get sick if she was advised by a physician not to perform then that should not be a reason that she gets kicked off of the show
The Voice is a competition TV show, not a team sport. Plenty of other contestants have performed sick- I do not believe she should have been included in the Voice Save unless she was able to perform. Why could they not postpone the sing-off until Reagan was better? Adam was totally wrong in campaigning for her- sick or not. He disrespected his only other team member, and DeAndre probably had a better chance at winning than Reagan does!
Adam and NBC did not handle this situation well they could have made a better plan. Adam is very competitive and I’m sure he thought his chances of wining with Reagan were better. Reagan had been at the top in voting two weeks in a row prior to the disaster that was “Cry”. DeAndre was in the bottom two weeks in a row. I like DeAndre but either he or his coach should have known better than trying to cover Bruno one week then John Legend the next only one in a million could pull that off successfully, proof is in the pudding, even with his great voice he was in the bottom in number of votes both weeks. Then who allowed 14 year old Reagan to cover Faith Hill’s song, a song that few in all of the entire industry could cover with success…..Adam needs to know the artists on his team and their limits before pushing them or allowing them to go beyond their limits. Poor song choices is the primary reason people get voted off
I compare this to the track and field runner, I can’t remember his name, but he pulled a hamstring right before the finish line. His dad came out of the stands and assisted him in finishing the race. He obviously didn’t win because others crossed before him but he was allowed to finish. The way this was done was unfair because she did not even compete and others were eliminated by allowing votes to be cast for someone who did not perform. What Adam did was totally wrong and if I were a contestant I would never ever choose Adam Levine as my coach. The producers should have if they wanted to allow Reagan to continue only a lemonade it one person this week due to her illness. But it was unfair Two bowls of the remaining contestants to force them to Sing for their life and allow America to vote for someone who did not sing.
It is a bummer to get sick during a competition, but if a runner gets injured or sick and can’t do the prelims to qualify at the Olympics, they don’t still get to run in the finals.

That being said my questions are: what makes her so special that the rules changed for her? What does Adam having two little girls at home have to do with any of this? And I’m not even gonna touch the special relationship with Reagan part that made him sound kinda like a perv. I lost all respect for him as a coach, a mentor and an artist when he threw DeAndre under the bus like he did. It was wrong on so many levels. If that young man’s self esteem or self confidence takes a hit its all on you Adam Levine! Shame on you for being a total A** Hat! I’m sure next season if you are still on the show you have a real problem filling your team. I can’t imagine anybody that experienced the awkwardness (and boy was it painful to watch) would ever have you as their first choice as a coach! Bless Kelly for trying to defuse the situation. I agree with Kay’s comments. How The Voice Producers can even allow him to continue after this season is beyond me. If I were a contestant and he was my only chair turn I’d have to deny him as my only option as a coach and see if I could come back on the next season or whatever it would have to be other than having him. Who could Trust him after this. I sure would hate to be in his band bc there is no telling how he treats his own group. Bc in my opinion he’s actually rude an obnoxious the way he talks to everyone including the audience telling everyone to shut up so he can speak or have the floor as if he was someone special. I liked Reagan from the start but as the weeks progressed I felt she started falling a little short in comparison to the others and especially in comparison to DeAndre within the last couple of weeks. DeAndre should seek some legal advice as to what an how this even was allowed in the first place. And lastly, if she was too sick to perform then why let her sit and watch how she’s voted on? I couldn’t believe how he treated this young man. DeAndre was amazing, and has been from the start. I’ve watched this show from day one, I’ve seen contestants go home from Adams teams because of his song choices for them. I always tell my husband its deliberate. After what he pulled last night, this might well be my last season to watch. Thank you Kelly for speaking up!

I thought I was watching American Idol for a moment, where as The Voice stands out to be very humble & classy. For the first time watching the Voice I felt disappointed after watching hours of Tvo ending with an ugly feeling. Shame on Adam & bravo to Kelley for giving the moment back to the guys. I’m sure Mark Burnett had to feel some what of what we all felt. SMH

True that I have heard other coaches tell their own singers that this was not their best performance to date as you say he is the one that is a singer and I have heard other judges on The Voice as well as American Idol make comments stating that they did not perform well that night so who are we to judge

Even this season he seemed to have a major boy crush on the long-haired Hawaiian singer Tyke And kept him in the battle rounds when the young country singer clearly won. I would caution anyone considering joining Adam‘s team in the future… If he has a future after this fiasco.

Just that viewers might be angry enough to resent Reagan and not vote for her. If we think about the percentages of the “saves” – if Reagan got 38% that means 62% didn’t vote for her.

It was Adam that let DeAndre down last week by poor song choice. That’s why he was in the bottom to begin with. Adam can’t believe he was in the bottom? He should consider his choices. Then Adam again for not encouraging folks to vote for him and encouraging them to vote for Reagan instead. It’s on him and it’s why he hasn’t won in many seasons. Perhaps he could see if Blake could help him with song choices for his artists, and how to treat and develop them as well.

Adam’s situation was difficult but not impossible. He could have played up the strengths of Deandre and Reagan and then allowed America to make the decision. I watched in disbelief and horror! Who throws their own team mate under the bus like Adam did? It was disresrepectful. Deandre looked hurt but kept his composure. I commend him! I predict that Adam’s behavior will hurt Reagan’s chances to advance. Not voting for Reagan IS an anti-Adam vote. Is it fair? Reagan didn’t ask Adam to say the negatives towards Deandre but…sitting in the audience…with a robe? Come on now! Even when sick, clothes can be worn and especially on national TV. Adam should have used his time to UPLIFT Deandre and apologize to him for HIS song choice.

EXACTLY! Mortified by what he did. I’m sorry I did not realize he was such a jerk good to know. Immediately all of his music is off of my playlists. There was a better way to blindly support both contestants than completely abandoning one. Clarkson tried to cover for him, but the damage was already done. Sad sad sad and done with the show.

I have always been an Adam Levine fan, I too was shocked about Deandre Nico, he is much better than Reagan, the best thing to do is BRING HIM BACK! I’m still an Adam fan, but it was a poor choice that he made. Of course I will still watch the show, my opinion, Adam has to apologize and the producers have to bring Nico back, Let’s not hate, Reagan will not win anyway. Yes I am disappointed in Adam, maybe he had other issues on his mind at the time.
Adam was ALL kinds of rude to DeAndre Nico tonight and I think Kelly as a coach herself felt it and that’s why she took the opportunity to basically apologize for Adam and tell DeAndre how great he performed. It was like saying “I’m sorry your buffoon of a coach has no tack and just gave you up to support the crying girl in the robe”. Isn’t the saying the show must go on? I always felt Adam was not keen on DeAndre winning the fan vote from the beginning of the show over Tyke James, Adam just seemed disappointed it wasn’t Tyke and he had to save him. Adam should have just said I support you both no matter who continues on. Not plead for a mediocre talented teen girl to go through over a better singer because he has “a special relationship with her”.
If she could get dressed in a robe, she could have gotten dressed in street clothes. That was in very poor taste, and just a little to personal. I mean would you be on national TV in your jams and robe??!!

I hope The Voice will do the right thing and bring a well deserved De Andre back. Adam should have kept silent and let the voters decide. In the end, this could possibly hurt Reagan more by losing voters who felt badly for De Andre. The only way to somewhat correct the problem, is to have him back and let the competition and voters do their job. We all make mistakes, but it’s how we handle them that matters in the end.

The Voice has got to do some serious damage control and get out ahead of this. There were a lot of people yelling at their tv’s when this whole thing went down. Adam can suck it up, eat some humble pie and apologize; and the producers and the network should let the three remaining voice singers have a do-over. The sad thing is, if De Andre were to win (and I’m confident he would) how could he honestly ever have the confidence to work with Adam again?

Everyone that feels this was handled poorly, should go to NBC’s network and complain. It’s one thing to say it in chats, but it won’t help if we don’t let those in charge know how we feel and what we think. After all, if we the viewers stop watching their shows, they don’t make money!
But Adam, needs to apologize and they should have to give it to the person who came in with the next highest votes, which was Deandre. Other people have had to leave the show due to personal reasons, and I’ve never heard them say that they would hold their spots until they could return, this situation should have been handled the same way. I know Adam has a “special” connection with her , but that has nothing to do with the competition, she couldn’t participate, so she should be off the show, period!

It appeared to me that they (the producers) were not going to allow time for Reagan to be spoke of/commented about (like they do after their performances); which I feel was wrong. Therefore it put Adam in a bad situation, knowing that Reagan has the voice to continue on, more so than DeAndre.
As for their vote % being as close as the screen showed, I feel DeAndre’s was that close/high because of how Adam chose to handle the situation. Yes, I feel bad for DeAndre; because of how Adam felt he had to do it and because DeAndre seems to be a genuinely nice guy. Though Adams decision on how to handle it, as he did, should not be held against Reagan.
I do disagree with Reagan being brought to sit in the audience; they could’ve had a camera with her, backstage or wherever.
I am sure if Adam would have spoken about the amazing performance of his person who actually performed they would have then given him time to speak about his girl who could not perform. My husband and I sat in disbelief, as we watched Adam blatantly praise Reagan, when he should have been complimenting Deandre. I felt the sucker punch for him, just gutted! You could see that Carson was shocked as well, and of course the camera’s didn’t show us the other coaches reactions, although Kelly did get a chance to come to Deandre’s defence, after the fact. Unbelievably biased and I do believe it will back fire on Adam, and he will once again be out of the race with no contestant left. I sure would like to know why Reagan was unable to perform. If she was well enough to be next to Mom in the audience, she should have been on stage, and given whatever she had to perform. Kelly did so earlier in the evening, hoarse voice and all. It’s what singers do, and fans accept the fact that they are human and get sick, but appreciate the effort to perform, even when they are not at their best. If Reagan was unable to meet her obligation to perform tonight, she should not have been eligible for the vote to save. Unfortunate but true!

I agree 100% percent. It was obvious he made his decision on who he wanted to get through no matter how well De Andre sang. I was sick to my stomach for DeAndre. To show Reagan sitting there in a robe with her Mom was a wrong move by the network. To play on people’s sympathy like that was unfair to the other 2 contestants. I believe whoever was second in the votes should return next week.
Totally agree! If she was well enough to be in a robe she should’ve gotten on stage and hacked her way through it like a professional! Isn’t the original tenet of Show Business “The Show Must Go On”? And Adam having daughters is about as relevant to a national singing competition as my dog watching at home with me. It was so clear that DeAndre felt completely betrayed. I have zero interest in watching increasingly large numbers of “little girls,” as Adam called Reagan, diss it out in a final. I watch the show for variety and for people to have a second chance at making it in this world – like a 21 year old young man who went through floods and hardship and lost his home, and sings like no one else. I love his spirit, that’s why I watch the Voice. Reagan is wonderful, but if you can’t make the stage, if you’re in a housecoat, you’re out! It’s called Grace, and DeAndre was the only one who showed any tonight. I’m very disappointed in the Adam and the show right now.
Adam only cares about Adam winning the show -and with all her streaming success, he thinks Reagan is his best chance. Period. His dismissal of DAndre’s great performance in favor of a little girl who obviously isn’t up to the pressure just to win the show for himself is disgusting- and typical. Totally agree. The irony, however, is that Adam likely had a better chance of winning with the better voice – the one he totally betrayed. DeAndre was given songs he clearly didn’t want to sing, but he made something of it. I’m sure Reagan is a sweet girl, but she is not The Voice in my opinion. She just got used. Strictly regarding Reagan’s song last night: They actually made the decision to raise the key of her song because the lower register was too low. She didn’t sing tonight because “she was under the weather” (aka sick), not code for “strained voice”. Last night I commented oh how it seemed her voice was off like something was wrong with her physical health. Even a cold can make once beautiful attainable higher notes sound like a cat screeching…as can a vocalist trying to sing too high. She’s hit those notes-and some- previously this season spot on. If an individual is sick ‘one’ night, you can almost guarantee their voice was affected negatively the prior.
Finally a comment in defense of this poor girl. Lighten up everyone.
She’s really good- but she unfortunately got sick. Adam told DAndre he was lucky he got to sing and since Reagan couldn’t , he was supporting her instead. He only wants to be the winning coach – it’s about how unfair Adam was to DAndre

Intelligent observation. If Reagan was sick last night it would explain her atypical strained and off key performance. The show has a lot invested in her. She is frequently mentioned by critics as being in the final four with Kirk, Kennedy and Sarah. That makes some good sense. I like DeAndrre but his song choices, whether his, Adam’s or the audiences have not showcased what he can do. After the blinds, he was the one to beat but he has steadily gotten weaker in his presentations. I think Adam is an idealist. He wants the show audience to be objective. Ain’t gonna happen. There are a lot of country fans out there, a good bit of pop and singing quality is frequently unrewarded. The Producers do interfere when they think they see a chance for ratings. All that said, did Adam handle this with aplomb? No. He had all the finesse of a baby elephant. But he was in a potential wipeout situation, and that wasn’t right either.

I think adam should be stripped as coach and leave the show you don’t throw your best performer under the bus especially when your other team mate goes forward without performing he should lose both and blames guy Dave should stay in the competition that was so wrong Adam very dissapointed
Wow…I’m shocked…It was bad enough they brought Reagan out to the stage in her robe, in tears just before the twitter vote. Adam then asked all his fans to vote for her instead of Nico. What a dick move. And even with all of that, he barely lost. I hope the producers realize how unfair that is and bring DeAndre back.
Am I the only one that noticed Adam was not happy Nico said he was not feeling the song choice yesterday? It was obvious Adam didn’t appreciate the shade and used his platform to get even by promoting the little girl. Adam, next time leave the ego at home or don’t make it so obvious!

Unfair! DeAndre should sue NBC! At a minimum, DeAndre should be put in the semi-finals. I lost respect for The Voice and for Adam Levine in particular tonight.

I feel the same way!! I’ve watched, tweeted, and downloaded. But that might have just ended tonight. That was uncomfortable and sickening.

I was so shocked and disgusted by what Adam Levine did to Deandre that I immediately went online to see if it was just me… nope! Everyone thinks it was a lowdown, unfair and shameful display of favortism. No way she will win now, so he dissed Deandre for nothing. I’m not watching unless NBC makes this right!
I lost so much respect for Adam Levine tonight. What he did to DeAndre was AWFUL and SO UNFAIR. If Reagan was too sick to sing she should have automatically sent home. Most people with an opportunity to be on that st as he would have drug themselves out there to perform. I think DeAndre was treated awful by Adam.
I remember when Kelly Clarkson was on American idol and had laryngitis she still went on and sang. On other competition shows if you can’t dance/sing you are automatically the one who goes home.
Yep. Show up, show goes on. Kelly is a pro- that’s why she has been so successful. Also, huge Thank you to Kelly Clarkson for praising DeAndre and recognizing what Adam had done to him – and not backing down or staying quiet. That was a really important moment, to stand up for that talented young man! DeAndre deserved the save and really should be brought back but how could he ever trust Adam again? Maybe on another team? Kelly Clarkson is the real deal. She’s got a lot of heart and class.
I agree!! And I hope that anyone that goes to audition for the Voice from now on doesn’t pick Adam as their coach. But really he needs to be gone!!! People treat animals better than how he treated DeAndre. So disrespectful! !!!
