The Windy City will be down three citizens next season: Chicago P.D. star Jon Seda is leaving the series after six seasons, while Chicago Med‘s Colin Donnell and Norma Kuhling will exit the hospital drama after this current fourth season. The departures are the result of “creative reasons related to the characters’ story evolution,” according to our sister site Deadline. (Read Donnell’s statement here.)
Seda first made his debut as Detective Antonio Dawson on the flagship show Chicago Fire. He briefly left P.D. when Antonio went to work for the State’s Attorney’s office on the ill-fated spinoff Chicago Justice for one season in 2017. Following the show’s cancellation, Antonio rejoined the Intelligence unit on P.D.
Donnell has played Dr. Connor Rhodes since Med‘s premiere, while Kuhling joined the series as Dr. Ava Bekker in the Season 2 finale.
Meanwhile, Fire fans can rest easy: The entire cast is on board for Season 8, including leading men Jesse Spencer and Taylor Kinney, who have signed new two-year deals, per Deadline.
In February, NBC handed out early renewals to Chicago Fire (for Season 8), P.D. (Season 7) and Med (Season 5). The three series currently air Wednesdays from 8-11 pm, with their season finales slated for May 22.
#OneChicago fans, hit the comments with your thoughts on the departures.
“Creative reasons” AKA cost cutting, probably due to Kinney and Spencer’s new salaries.
Not happy about this, tbh.
The guys on Fire should not affect the budgets of PD or Med
Shouldn’t, but I’d be surprised if they don’t. The shows are often treated as one entity, and it’s extremely unlikely to be a coincidence that their new contracts were confirmed yesterday and this happened today…
Yeah but Fire wouldn’t survive without them and while PD will suck a little more it’ll still likely survive.
That doesn’t make it right at all.
Could survive without Spencer but maybe not Kinney. Spencer’s character has really sucked this season.
No way! Casey is like the heart of the show.
It’s very likely to be a coincidence. Each show has its own budget as that is how television works.
Huge loss for Chicago PD.
Antonio has been the perpetual third wheel since about season two. Lindsay and Olinsky were both much more instrumental to the fabric of the show, and it weathered their departures well enough.
Olinsky was NOT more instrumental and Lindsey’s character became a whining bore. I am no longer interested in watching. Goodbye Chicago’s; I’ll shut the door on my way out . . .
Are you watching the same show I’ve watched? Olinsky’s friendship and a look into the past behavior of the way it was when people actually had each other’s back, and didn’t just say they did. Whether it was for the right reason or not. Lindsay’s character showed how officer’s do/did help the youth in the community many officers in the ’60, ’70s, ’80s and even now guiding the youth and giving far more than just being there to throw someone in jail. I’m sure you will find something like WWE to watch hope you enjoy it
I loved Olinsky and considered a great loss. Lindsay not so much.
Not happy at all about Dr. Rhodes leaving. He’s one of my favs!
I think I won’t be watching anymore. I pretty much watch for him. The rest of the characters aren’t very likable.
He was the only reason I watched the show–adios to that now…
I’m also upset that Dr. Rhodes will be leaving Med. He is one of my favorites on the show and I hope they replace him with someone just as good looking and talented.
Wow. Losing Colin Donnell is going to be a big loss.
Maybe he could go back to Arrow for its last season
Good news re Colin Donnell is that he can finally be used for a multi-episode arc of some time in the Arrowverse including next season’s epic crossover.
This really stinks! Med better get someone really good to replace the star of the show
They think Nick (Will) is the star…
They’re wrong.
They absolutely are. This really looks like them sacrificing PD and Med for Fire…
Barf! Can’t stand that character.
Amen!
How do you know what they think? Between this and your comment above about how new contracts on one show means dumping characters on another, you really don’t understand how television works, do you?
Chicago Med has been boring this season, imo. Should have gotten rid of Will.
Will is boring
Disagree. I like Dr. Rhodes but his character not evolving enough. Too predictable in that for the most part all you could expect is him saving the day with an unbelievable life-saving operation. With Halstead, more multi-faceted….the medical side of things obviously , and the (more exciting) drama outside of it.
Oh yes. I totally agree. Will needs to go. Him and his awful mop on his head. The show would be better if they heroically disposed of him, it may even flourish. The new guy, Dominic Rains who is Dr Marcel, is already exciting to watch! And his acting is 10 fold better than Nick Gehlfuss.
Really going to miss Jon Seda on Chicago PD. Going to miss both of them on Chicago Med too.
They have turned the character of Ava into a jealous, obsessive crazy person, so she was pretty much doomed. I will miss Colin’s character a lot though.
Bekker is getting a little “out there”, so I’m not sorry to see the end of that character. Here’s hoping she doesn’t completely lose her mind and kill off Dr. Rhodes.
Based on what they’ve given us so far, a murder/suicide plot wouldn’t be totally out of the blue, though I doubt the show would actually go there. Seems a bit too melodramatic, even for them.
I hope you’re right.
Before this was announced, I had a feeling Bekker might be creepy enough to kill Rhodes, and then herself (or attempt to, at least). Very sorry to see Rhodes go, but I’m THRILLED that I won’t have to hear or see Bekker again.
Me, too! I’m sorry for the actress, stuck with such an awful story line. I didn’t mind their initial competitiveness and acrimony, and I even liked the humanizing of her character when they became romantic. But this crazy stalker business isn’t copacetic.
Wow hope they get some good replacements. Not gonna miss Bekker, I never thought her addition was necessary.
The recent storylines for all of these characters have made them nearly unwatchable. While I like all the actors, I’m not going to be sad to see their awful story arcs end.
Well I don’t watch the other 2 shows……but damn that sucks for Chicago PD! They just LOST Olinsky and of course Lindsay (tho. it’s been awhile) now Antonio?!!….I guess😰
Some kind of twisted murder-suicide ending for Connor and Ava? ….Nah I hope not. But seriously, I’m really gonna miss all these characters.
This will be a sad day.. will be surely missed!!💔💔💔😢😢
If the producers keep writing the most highly regarded people off the shows they’ll be no one left to peak our interest or keep us interested. The next step, cancelation! I don’t think they have a clue. Chicago PD hasn’t been the same without Al and now Antonio.
The producers have their favourites though, and they aren’t really subtle about hiding who they are. Dawson on Fire (although she’s gone) and Lindsay on PD (also gone) being the main ones.
Upton has been very much in the spotlight with Ruzek, with Halstead having less focus than previously, whilst Dawson and Atwater are in the background and Burgess gets the odd episode.
I’m guessing the truth will come out about Dawson and the guy who kidnapped his daughter.
No actually what I think is Connor is gonna find out that Ava is the one that killed connors dad and Connor is gonna lose his mind and kill Ava and then kill him self and I stopped watching Chicago pd when they got rid of Lindsey she is my favorite and stop bashing Will I love his character and his fight for Manning and if they take anymore off of Chicago fire I will stop watching both shows it’s getting crazy that they are getting rid of all the good ones
I agree
Disappointed. Seems like they didn’t want to write for these characters this season. Will miss them.
Colin Donnell was a reason to stick with this show. Maybe going back to ER on Hulu will work instead.
OH no, so upset about John seda. Love him. Sorry but I, a little tired of the two on Med so not that worried about them.
I don’t watch PD, but I’ll miss Donnell. Kuhling, I’ll be glad to see the last of. Annoying, unnecessary character.
Honestly, Antonio has been annoying me over the last two seasons so I’m happy.
Agreed
Why? Literally Colin is my favourite character on med.
Happy to see the back of Bekker – she was just annoying. Not happy that Collin Donnell is leaving. I would have rather they let Will go so that Natalie and the Pretty Little Liars guy could get together. Also sad to hear that Antonio is leaving PD. Would rather they let Kim go – can’t get used to her character or maybe its the actress. I feel like she is overacting.
Agree with you on the getting rid of Kim Burgess. Very poor actor.
Agree, glad to see Bekker leave, she was getting annoying. Now if they can just rid the show of Will, I would be happy.
For PD, so sad to see Antonio is gone. I wished there was a way to get rid of Voight and make it an honest PD , but everyone loves to hate him. Absolutely love Jay Halstead!
Kim is awful. I don’t care for her at all. Yet she gets a lot of camera time. Overacting is a definately. She ruined Ruzek’ s character and he has become boring. All of them have become boring. They ruined Chicago PD. Hopefully they will find some one with talent.
Colin Donnell is my favorite Chicago Med character. Losing him going to be big loss. Show can’t be the same without him.
Big loss for PD and Med. It’s going hurt.
I’d be sad if I still watched PD but I still know it’s a huge loss.
That’s beyond annoying. We’re barely hanging on with Chicago Med because we can’t stand Will and now 2 we like are leaving? Do they think that people like his character? I don’t get it.
Rhodes is the only reason I still watched Chicago med.
