Chicago Fire wrapped up its coronavirus-truncated eighth season on Wednesday with an episode that clearly wasn’t meant to be the season finale, but still left viewers with some big questions, mainly: Is Foster leaving ambo behind?
After getting some praise from Chicago Med‘s Will last week, Foster reveals to Stella that she wants to go back to med school. In fact, she’s already reapplied to Northwestern and has an interview coming up, but she’s worried about abandoning Brett during a difficult time. Stella says she can’t tell her what to do, and the person she should be talking to is her roomie. Unfortunately, Will beats Foster to the punch, spilling the beans while the paramedics are at the hospital. Foster wants to talk about it, but Brett is upset and exclaims that it sounds like Foster has already made up her mind.
At her interview, Foster gives an impassioned speech about how the mistake she made was the best thing that ever happened to her, because it brought her to Firehouse 51 and made her a better person. And speaking of good people, Brett is waiting outside for Foster to make amends. As for whether Foster got into Northwestern, the interview committee will let her know
in a episode that was supposed to air later this season, I presume eventually. “They’d be lucky to have you,” Brett says.
Elsewhere, Capp is injured during a chlorine explosion and is at risk of losing his eyesight. When Casey and Severide go to check on him at Med, Will reveals that Capp refused treatment and took off. Will is required to report his actions to CFD, but Casey and Severide convince the doc to give them a day to sort out what happened. The firefighters find their colleague at his home, where Capp is resting his eyes in the dark. They eventually convince him to go back to the hospital, where Capp is cleared to work in a couple shifts. After eight seasons, the storyline finally gives Capp a moment in the spotlight. “I always joke with Randy [Flagler] that a little Capp goes a long way,” showrunner Derek Haas tells TVLine. “It felt, after eight seasons, that we could see where Capp whittled away his time when not at the firehouse.”
Other highlights from the episode:
* Gallo makes a mess of things with Violet. He told her they should keep things casual and see other people, but when she gives him the cold shoulder and says she has a date, he’s not happy. He goes to the worst possible crowd for advice: Herrmann, Mouch and Cruz. No offense, fellas, but Gallo really should have sought out his female colleagues. Gallo and Violet later have an argument, which ends with Gallo exclaiming that they should get married — that was newlywed Cruz’s advice — much to Violet’s befuddlement.
* Stella becomes concerned about one of her Girls on Fire students, and Severide encourages his girlfriend to follow her instincts and call the girl.
* Scott tells Brett that he and baby Amelia are moving back to Rockford, but he wants Brett to be a part of her half-sister’s life. She vows to visit them as much as possible.
Fire fans, what did you think of the season ender? Grade it below, then hit the comments!
Foster should pursue her dreams in med school OFF screen. I wouldn’t miss her. But she can continue to live with Brett and let those two become a couple and we only see her occasionally. That would at least stop the cringe-worthy scenes between Brett and Casey.
When are they finally going to get Casey and Brett going to get together?
Hopefully when hell freezes over . . .
I am so with you on that. Casey deserves someone a little more stable, while Brett needs someone to need her.
I agree. Can they not find someone that works elsewhere? Also he was married to her so-called best friend. Although they are no longer married, they did hook up when Dawson came back so there is still something there. There are other men besides the one that was married to your best friend that you also work with and other women for Casey.
Hopefully soon!
Soon! They are good together!
I think we’ll see a whole new great side to Brett if and when she and Casey get together. They were made for each other
Im with April. Been waiting the whole season ( which was short) to see Casey and Brett get together and nothing. Im disappointed.
I sorta expect that their ‘relationship’ would have been displayed in the episodes that have been scrapped due to Corona. I’m not sure if they would have decided to move forward as a couple (or kiss)..which I hope (I ship them hard), but I do believe they would have expressed their feelings in the finale..would probably have been one of the cliffhangers I suppose.
love this show and glad its renewed for more seasons
I want Foster to follow her dreams but I don’t want her to lose any screen time. She’s one of the reasons I still continue to watch. I couldn’t care less about Brett and Casey being a couple because she’s so bland, plus they look like they could be brother and sister, it’s something about their facial features around the eyes.
I hope Foster does leave. Haven’t liked her since she came on screen. Not a huge fan of Brett either. These people act like they’re in high school half the time. Brett gets all hurt and weepy because Foster wants to be a doctor? You’re supposed to want good things for your friends.
She was not weepy, because she want’s to be a doctor. She felt initially hurt instead oh her friend, partner and roommate, some one else told her of this life altering decision that also effects her. And she got over it fast enough.
Gostaria que a Gabi voltasse e fica com o casey
Glad she is leaving. I hate her character
Why wasn’t it advertised about I being the last episode?
Re-apply to medical school? She already has her MD, and was two years into a residency.
Cant wait for the new season
With Foster leaving and Cruz having moved out, Brett will be looking for new roommates. Or maybe a new, smaller place. Could open the door for Scott/Amelia to move in with her in her current place or for her to get her own place thus allowing her to start something with Casey.
Foster, follow your dream. Looking forward to seeing you intern at ChiMed. Also, am I the only one who thought of the movie Flashdance when she walked into the interview. Would have been soo cool to break out into a dance lolol. As other posters have said with regards to Brett and Casey….ugh NO. Give them both exciting new people to go for.
Thank you! I’m so glad someone else had a Flashdance flashback.
I understand it wasn’t supposed to be the finale so it’s not what I expected for a closing. I even commented to my husband (before I learned filming was shut down) that all three Chicago shows were weak finales
Too bad they had to cancel the last shows. If Severeid is leaving I hope they kill him off.
The finale that wasn’t the finale (?) was okay in the circumstances. I hope Severide doesn’t leave, he is one of the reasons I watch……
I quite like Foster but I don’t really care if she stays or goes. My guilty secret is Matt Casey , he could do with someone a bit more lively than Brett though. Looking forward to next series
