When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies… but the pack of Game of Thrones fans clamoring for a Dunk and Egg prequel series survive.
HBO reportedly is developing a Thrones prequel based on George R.R. Martin’s novellas about Dunk (aka Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (Aegon V Targaryen), per our sister site Variety.
The events in the Dunk and Egg tales take place about a century before those of Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, which were the basis for HBO’s wildly popular fantasy drama.
Martin previously said there were no plans to use the novellas in question — The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight — as the basis for a sequel series.
HBO currently is moving forward with House of the Dragon, which was co-created by Martin and Ryan J. Condal (Colony). Set 300 years before the original Thrones series, it will follow House Targaryen as it begins its storied downfall. Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik will serve as co-showrunner, alongside Condal.
House of the Dragon will star Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Prince Daemon Targaryen and Paddy Considine (The Outsider) as King Viserys. The cast also includes Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) as Alicent Hightower, the Hand of the King’s daughter; and Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers) as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, King Viserys’ eldest child.

In late 2019, HBO officially passed on its first post-Thrones spinoff, a pilot from Jane Goldman staring Naomi Watts (Twin Peaks). “The Jane Goldman one was a bit of a bigger swing because there was a lot more invention,” HBO president Casey Bloys told TVLine in January 2020. “House of the Dragon, George has text and history for that era, so there is a bit more of a road map.”
HBO declined to comment for this story.

Stupid title
If you consider the stories and the relationship between Dunk and Egg, it’s kind of a sweet title. But I do see where people could look at it and think it’s silly.
Nowhere is it an official title, its just that they are basing a series on it.
Can we just let Game of Thrones related stuff rest for awhile? The original really killed enthusiasm for it. Like I barely hear anyone talk about Game of Thrones. Not in a pleasant light anyway.
Unfortunately, I agree. I don’t believe that a bad ending of a series ruins the entire show. I don’t regeret watching GoT. because I did love watching it. But the ending did kill any desire to ever re-watch it (and I love to re-watch stuff I love) and subsequently also any interest in a show set in the same universe.
Yes, yes, yes, I’ve been wanting this for so long. I love the stories of Dunk and Egg, they’re so lighthearted at times, fun, and enjoyable to read. I cant wait for this to be a thing.
I love Dunk and Egg and would definitely watch a series based on those characters. I disliked Fire and Blood, on the other hand, found it boring – almost no character development. I don’t look forward to that series on HBO unless there is a very very good script and very very good casting.
HECK YEA!
As.long as its not a comedy! “Dunk and Egg” sounds like it could play for laughs and that would be awful. Maybe thats just a working title….
The books are very lighthearted and are also playful at times while still taking place within the realm of Westros. The names are nicknames of the two main characters. All in all, while there is more humors moments within it then the main series of Game of Thrones, the stories are just as grounded and serious in nature.
