One of Dr. Melendez’s OG residents is returning to St. Bonaventure. [pmc_inline_gallery]
Former Good Doctor star Chuku Modu is set to reprise his role as Dr. Jared Kulu, our sister site Deadline reports. He’ll first appear on Monday, March 6, in an episode titled “Old Friends,” when Dr. Kalu arrives at St. Bons with a billionaire patient.
But wait, there’s more! A source tells TVLine that Modu will appear in a whopping seven episodes. (In other words, he’ll recur for the remainder of Season 6.)
Modu was a series regular in Season 1 of the ABC medical drama. Initially, Jared worked under Nicholas Gonzalez’s Dr. Melendez, alongside fellow residents Shaun and Claire. Jared and Claire even dated a while, but broke up toward the end of Season 1.
Jared lost his job at St. Bons after he physically assaulted surgical attending Dr. Coyle, who’d previously harassed Claire. He was written out following the Season 2 premiere, at which point Jared left San Jose to continue his residency in Denver.
Modu is the third series regular to leave The Good Doctor and come back. Fellow Season 1 cast member Beau Garrett reprised Jessica for a brief cameo in the COVID-themed Season 4 opener, while Antonia Thomas returned as Claire for a pair of Season 5 episodes following her shocking departure at the end of Season 4.
His return comes one week before the backdoor pilot for prospective spinoff The Good Lawyer, which stars Nancy Drew‘s Kennedy McMann and Desperate Housewives vet Felicity Huffman and is set to air Monday, March 13 at 10/9c.

Great news!
He should have never left
Well there was a reason he left as he was a series regular on another show that shot in the area as in season 5 when the 100 did there 125 year time jump and on a new planet he was a series regular on the 100 as Jacob so they had to write him off as even though the 100 started later they shot af the same time as the good doctor
Thank you. Answered my next question
I’m happy Chuku is coming back, I was annoyed when they cut after the first season. I always wondered the reasoning by it.
It’s because he was offerd another role that also shoots in Vancouver as even though he was written off the good doctor he wasn’t unemployed long as he was written off because when the 100 did there 125 year time jump and new planet choku was one of the new cast members as Jacob and played it for 3 years and both the 100 and the good doctor shoot at the same time even though they started at different times of the year
Ooh, interesting. Cool news – I look forward to seeing him return, and what storyline they have related to him returning. Will be nice to see him again.
Ahhhhhh!
Happy to hear the great news!!!
I’m a bit disappointed.
The email headline,
“Breaking News: Good Doctor Shocker: Former Series Regular Set for Extended Return Stint” had me hoping that Antonia Thomas was returning as Claire.
I wish they both would come back fulltime; I liked them together.
Yessss! Now bring back Carly. Shaun just threw her to the wolves 🙄. What a jack bum!
Carly was never going to last on this show. Her job was to be a gf to Shawn. It’s like any body that’s dating a major character in a show. They’re not permanent characters.
I was so annoyed at how they treated Carly. She put in all the time and effort with Shaun; getting him used to touching and being close to somebody. After all she did he ends up with Leah, who isn’t one of my favorite characters.
Carly was a self-centred drama queen, unable to deal with her own issues and not willing to accept his ASD.
Not surprised she ended up sabotaging and ultimately killing the relationship
, because of these same insecurities.
They were never going to let him end up with the person of color. In TV land it seems they found it far more likely that he would end up with the girl he stalked and threatened.
For real? That is your take on it? SMH.
🙌 yes 👏 thrilled!!
I loved him, wish he had never left
I’m excited! I’m also excited to see The Good Lawyer! The Good Doctor is a fabulous show! I’ve been watching it since Season 1, Episode 1! 😊
Yay! Some of the eye candy will be back.
Shocker??? Big deal!! I don’t even remember him! Bring Claire back if you want a great re-addition to the cast! Who even cares about this guy?!?
I do. I really enjoyed his character and he wasn’t bad to look at either! It’s also nice to find out, courtesy of @Coby preimesberger above, the actual reason he left.
Reality check. Dude is hot 🔥. Get over yourself
YES! But I sure wish Claire would also. I’d really like to have had Dr Melendez never leave. His roll was much better in The Good Doctor than in La Brea.
At least, in La Brea, his mediocre acting doesn’t clash like it used to in TGD.
I am definitely looking forward
I stopped watching this show because if it’s not Claire I don’t care.
Great. If Deb Chen can go home again, so can he
That’s good I liked him. I would love to see Antonia Thomas come back as Claire. I really loved her and her character.
