A defining moment in Young Sheldon‘s life has seemingly been erased — or, at the very least, skipped over. [pmc_inline_gallery]
The Big Bang Theory prequel’s previous episode picked up at the start of 13-year-old Sheldon’s spring break — the same spring break where, per Big Bang lore, Sheldon walks in on George having sex with another woman. On the mothership, it’s the reason Dr. Cooper knocked three times before entering a room.
But alas, Season 6’s 18th episode skipped over that life-altering moment, jumping right from Georgie’s impromptu marriage proposal to Sheldon and Missy’s return to school. Spring break was officially over.
Executive producer Steve Holland previously told TVLine that Sheldon wouldn’t walk in on George this season. But he also didn’t rule out that it could happen some time in the future. “Without saying it didn’t happen, we’re not obligated to tell all the stories that Sheldon told on Big Bang,” he explained. “I’m not saying we are or we are not [telling that story], but it’s not happening in Season 6. It could potentially happen in Season 7, and it’s a possibility we’ve talked about a lot, so it’s on the table. But just because it happened doesn’t mean it’s a story [our narrator] has to tell.”
We recently learned that Sheldon’s trip to Germany — a trip he said on Big Bang took place when he was 15 — has been moved up to the spinoff’s Season 6 finale. That gives us reason to believe that George’s adultery may still come into play later on, even if the timing deviates from what we were told on Big Bang.
As for what did happen during Thursday’s episode: Mandy rejected Georgie’s proposal. “He just caught me off guard is all,” she told Meemaw. Georgie and Mandy ultimately agreed that Georgie wouldn’t spring any more proposals on her; he’d give her fair warning next time. That leads us to believe that there will be another proposal by season’s end — and Mandy will say yes.
What did you think of Young Sheldon Season 6, Episode 18: “Little Green Men and a Fella’s Marriage Proposal”? Sound off in Comments.
I’m starting to believe that this series is nothing more than a fantasy of Sheldon’s. It’s the way he wishes his life was instead of it being the way it truly was.
are you suggesting that they are Roseanning everything? I guess we’ll have to see if George Sr is still here once the end begins
I think that this narration is Sheldon telling his children (or some other person) his life in Texas just like the narrator of How I Met Your Mother told his children a long convoluted tale of eventually meeting their mother. Does Sheldon always tell an accurate story? Amy had to correct Sheldon about the final result of naming a child Leonard. Otherwise I think Sheldon is uncomfortable about lying.
I love continuity as much as the next person, but I’m all for Young Sheldon going its own way and following the story they are telling without feeling required to match up perfectly with TBBT. George Cooper was a name with no practical reference outside of Sheldon’s stories on TBBT. But now that we’ve been treated to the 3-dimensional characters of Young Sheldon, I’d rather opt for a solid story contained in this series than having to consistently match the guiderails of the first show.
What an excellent comment. Thank you for posting this.
Hearing the stories about George on TBBT made me not like the guy at all. Now that I have seen George on YS all these years and I have a great fondness for the dude. He has put his family first multiple times, before his wants, I wish I could say the same about Mary.
Kind of reminds me of high school when a teenager develops a horrible reputation through the account of one individual, and the rest of the high school class buys into the bull crap without having any first hand knowledge or experience with the ostracized teenager. BTW, that happens far more often than anyone would think.
I was surprised and saddened by Mandy’s reaction. If she had to turn him down, she could’ve been nicer about it.I felt bad for Georgie. In her defense,I really believe that she was caught off guard.Missy was so sweet to offer to go the movies with Billy Sparks.Sad that she couldn’t keep that date but I get that too.Sheldon’s arc has been boring me to be honest.
Ditto. Wish the producers would let more of Iain into Sheldon’s character. Iain is a great developing talent with incredible potential.
I’m actually getting into Ian’s performance and how it parallels Jim Parson’s as Sheldon. Up to now it’s been hard to see Parson’s Sheldon in Ian’s, and I’ve thought that was a problem – how does a kid whose attitude goes from being mostly a befuddling, childish pain in the butt to a grossly selfish, arrogant pain in the butt? One of my problems with TBBT has been how I’d sincerely like to see Sheldon slugged by everybody he encounters. Over the years he’s been at times impossible to take. So lately I’ve been watching to see if I can imagine older Sheldon in younger Sheldon. It’s getting easier, frankly. He’s just more frustrated when he’s thwarted now, but growing towards petulant as he begins to be aware that his IQ isn’t going to get him what he wants as he gets older either.
I think not everything is accurate as Sheldon told it. Take Billy Sparks he KS a nice guy not a bully. But do think Gerorge will end up passing away.
Why is everyone freaking out that the story is a bit off? Doesn’t anyone remember on Cheers Fraiser told the group his dad was dead and never mentioned a brother. Then Fraiser moves to Seattle and he has a father and brother? Then it was written he lied about them. When he was in Boston. It’s all in the writing of spin offs. Continuity means nothing.
That was one of my favorite Frasier moments, and it was hysterical too.
“You’re a cop? Frasier told me he was a scientist.”
“He was dead what did it matter?”
I’m fine with this show being its own thing. It doesn’t have to connect perfectly. Its a great show and I hope that they are able to keep it going for a few more seasons!
True, they’re not obligated to depict everything older-Sheldon mentioned, but they can’t legitimately pretend the major stuff he talked about never happened at all. (Or what does the word prequel mean?)
It stunk
The original show struggled to follow its own continuity through the seasons, so I’m OK with “Young Sheldon” not following TBBT’s storylines.
I think we’re continuing to find out that the Sheldon in TBBT wasn’t always being completely accurate with his dates/recollections. I’m hoping the discrepancies are talked about in the upcoming episodes or S7.
Another alternative not mentioned is to have Sheldon see something that made him think that he saw his Dad having sex with another woman when he did not. This could be done in a number of different ways, and would preserve George Senior’s standing as a good father as well as continuity with the BBT. LAnd for now, that’s all I have to say about that. 😀
I think that’s a great idea. I do not want to see George cheat on his wife. He’s too good a guy.
I don’t want to see him die either. Go ahead. Let the shows diverge.
As Young Sheldon proceeds, it becomes more and more difficult to manage the seamless integration of the two shows. Young Sheldon is already more mature than adult Sheldon when we first saw him on TBBT. Their appearance is starkly different as well. MeeMaw was not hot on TBBT, as she is on Young Sheldon.
I agree. The George we heard about on TBBT was constantly maligned and denigrated by both Sheldon & Mary, while in actuality, the flesh-and-blood George we see on YS is a dedicated, sensitive family man. Remember the dinner date with Missy at Red Lobster (adorable episode!) And when George drove sveral hours away so Sheldon could watch the space shuttle launch? Just two examples of the type of dad George is (unlike the man older Sheldon once said shot up his mom’s decorative plates). And George is absolutely NOT a stupid man. I sincerely doubt he’d have an affair in his own house!
The knocking thing is so big in TBBT that it doesn’t really make sense that he’d remember the cause of that knock habit in a wrong way…
I could be wrong but if i remember right Sheldon said he was 14 when he walked in on his father. If so, since he is currently 13, it would make sense that it didn’t happen yet
My hope is that older Sheldon misunderstood what he saw and that George was actually innocent. It’s clear from this show that George isn’t perfect but he is a good man.
If you go back and rewatch the early seasons of Big Bang, you will discover that Sheldon was lying about “why he knocked 3x” because in the 1st season at least he didn’t do it more than one scene shows him knocking “normally”…
Entertaining episode! Georgie, Sheldon & Missy all put in uncomfortable situations, life learning/altering situations! It will be interesting to see how each of them handles the outcome. I would like to see more of how Missy matures as well.
Pretty, pretty please keep George on Young Sheldon. I absolutely love that character.
I don’t understand why people get so hung up on continuity. Sheldon didn’t drink from this glass like he mentioned in passing so it makes the whole show unwatchable. (Example) who cares. Just enjoy the show for what it is.
I can’t recall exactly when, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen young Sheldon, in an episode of YS this season, knock 3 times at a door, which, if true, does not jive with TBBT narrative. Can anyone else corroborate the 3 knocks, or am imagining things?
Yes, I saw that, too!
So, we knew how it was going to go with Missy and Billy but I still wish she had taken the high road.
Do people have notebooks with every reference to Sheldon’s childhood from BBT so they can make sure Young Sheldon follows every single thing he ever said on the show? The obsession and constant “news” articles about the discrepancies is getting old.
Well, usually when a baby appears in a show, the end is in sight….
I am extremely happy that Sheldon did not walk in on George having an affair. I like the happy side of this show. Maybe he thought it was another woman, but it was really his mother wearing a wig! That’s enough to knock 3 times, yet not tear the family apart.
Please bring Sheldon as a main character back! I so sick nd tired of George Jr. stupidity Meemow manhunts, Missy’ “acting out”!!!!
Throw rock anywhere and you hit some idiots like any of those, but try to find anyone resembling Sheldon…
