Ser Duncan the Tall lives up to his name in the first photo from Game of Thrones‘ upcoming prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

HBO released the first look at Peter Claffey (Bad Sisters) as the neophyte knight Dunk (who towers over most) on Tuesday in conjunction with an announcement that the series had begun production in Belfast, Ireland. The series, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s novella, also stars Dexter Sol Ansell (ITV’s Emmerdale) as Egg, Dunk’s bald young squire.

The premium cable network also announced several additions to the series’ cast. They include Sam Spruell (Fargo) as Maekar Targaryen, Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country) as Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel (The Crown) as Baelor Targaryen, Daniel Ings (Sex Education) as Ser Lyonel Baratheon and Tanzyn Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things) as Tanselle.

Per the official logline, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is “set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory” and “great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

In addition, Sarah Adina Smith (Lessons in Chemstry, Hanna) will direct three of Season 1’s six episodes. Owen Harris (Black Mirror), an executive producer on the show, will direct the other three.

The prequel was formally announced in April 2023. The series is written and executive-produced by Martin and Ira Parker. Ryan Condal, who currently serves as House of the Dragon‘s showrunner, Owen Harris, Sarah Bradshaw and Vince Gerardis also are EPs. It is slated to premiere in June 2025.
