The CW‘s All American is losing its star player.
Daniel Ezra will not return as a series regular for Season 7, TVLine has confirmed. The actor, who since Season 1 has played Spencer James, is expected to make guest appearances moving forward.
According to our sister site Deadline, Ezra and showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll came to the decision to bring Spencer’s arc to a close ahead of Season 6. The announcement follows an especially eventful episode Monday wherein — spoiler alert! — Spencer was drafted into the NFL. That was followed by a time jump that saw Spencer play in the Super Bowl and get engaged to Samantha Logan’s Olivia.
“After making the difficult decision to leave All American, my sole focus became completing the journey of the most life-affirming character I’ve ever played in the manner he deserves. Thanks to Nkechi and the writers, I got my wish,” James said in a statement to Deadline. “Season 6 is ‘Spencer’s goodbye.’ I’ll miss him. I’ll miss our cast and crew. I hope it’s been as fun to watch him as it has been to play him.”
Added Carroll: “Partnering with Daniel Ezra over the last six seasons to bring Spencer’s story to life has been such an amazing, fulfilling, experience. Daniel truly is a gift and brought so much to the character on and off the field. And while Spencer has achieved his NFL dreams, I’m grateful Daniel will still remain an important part of this family, both in front of and behind the camera as we step into a new, exciting chapter of All American.”
All American was previously renewed for Season 7. The final two episodes of Season 6 — which resumes Monday, July 8 — will see Spencer and Olivia plan their wedding.
Thnx for spoiling the next episode! Seriously? At least put spoiler alert in the title!!
I think it should end; Spencer James is All American. People say all great shows go one season to long, I think next season will be All American’s.
Oh no thats awful news. I know they said new characters were coming but I didnt expect the MAIN one to go! He was the show. I’m sad to see him go. Does that mean Samantha is goung too and Olivia will pop up as a guest?
That doesn’t work in this show, we didn’t even get a shout out that JJ cant make it to the wedding.
Who else will be going? I feel like Jordan will stay and coach with Asher so Layla will stay too. Grace and Dillon are moving to Boston permanently
Its so convenient that Patience, Coop, Spencer and now Olivia are in NY there should be a spin off of their life there n the cross over. BUT what am I saying this is TheCW!
I will miss the original show and characters/actors, it was a pleasure to watch them each season.
Cody Christian (Asher) is not going to be in Season 7.
Really, I didn’t read that. That’s awful too. I love Asher as well
Surprising. I thought the next season would have him as an assistant coach.
They have just cancel this one instead and kept Walker and used the money they were putting into this show into Walker.
Billy Baker has been missed but Spencer James is the center of the show, I can’t imagine what it will be like without him. I’m sad to hear that he’s leaving, I Love this show.
If it’s an entirely new cast, what will be the link? We need a few legacy characters to make existing viewers want to stay. Not only Preach, which is where they might b going.
Not surprising considering they wouldn’t be following him into the NFL
Well, the writing is on the wall. All American series will end with season 7. And once that happens, there’s nothing left for me to watch on the CW.
With the time jump, we skipped over Jordan’s senior season which i thought would be shown next season… I hope we get to find out in the next few episodes if he gets drafted as well.
Daniel is that whole show. Him and Sam are the only part worth watching. Everyone else is secondary.
Can I just say here that I was looking forward to the wedding and the speeches. And what happens? Officiant Spencer does all the talking and we only see Jordan and Layla mouth their “I Do”s. And they literally cut off Asher’s speech to take a phone call that Spencer gets drafted and they all go crazy for Spencer at Jordan and Layla’s wedding. I am glad Spencer won’t be the center of the show next year. But not sure I will watch anyway. It seems like it is concluded.
(p.s. I thought the final scene was a dream because there was no way he was getting to the Superbowl in his first season and getting some sort of MVP.)
Why couldn’t he get to the super bowl in his first season? And if he had a good game in the bowl he could easily win MVP.
Spencer did not go in the first round. This means that the fictional bobcats could be better than any team would have drafted him in the first round. Their HC could have died or retired rather than having been fired, and he was replaced by Montez. As for Super Bowl MVP, that is a one game award.
well.. pretty much every team drafts in the first round unless they traded a pick… and we don’t know what round or what position the Bobcats were picking in.. but not getting picked early in the round means he likely could go to a better team.
He went on day 2, presumably in the 2nd round based on how light it was outside. At worst he went in the 3rd round. The Bobcats could have traded for the pick as well. They could be a really good team that got that much better in the offseason.
It hurt me to my heart that Daniel is leaving. All American is like part of my family, their lose was my lose, their happiness is my happiness, so he truly be miss.
Ugh just let the show go out with some dignity. This is reminiscent of the dreadful final seasons of Scrubs and That ’70s Show. Once the star is out, it’s time to pack it in!
This is very upsetting. I love Daniel Ezra as Spencer James. I’m so disappointed.
I’m so sorry to see him go. He’s one of the reasons I watch the show
I.love all of.the characters but Spencer is a special part of each character of.the show. I truly hope that he decides to return as his character will be missed.
I am so happy that you finally received the football pinnacle you were after. That whole episode had me cry, along with the wedding, the book purchases, the proposal. I am a 70 year old male.
This was the best episode in my opinion.
Will miss seeing him on n the show I hope he returns to the series. A extraordinary actor.
If All American ends-up confirming season seven as its last, those yet-to-be-introduced “next-generation characters” several sources keep mentioning are going to look wasted. A good reason why I’m not a huge fan of “post-script seasons”.
You writers producers or whatever you all will mess up a good picture picture you got really now Spencer which is the show will not be looking at it as much now thanks for the time
Oh nooooooooo. Not Spencer too. I’m not happy about this news.
I am so heart broken to hear this!!!! Without Spencer there’s no all American!!!! I wish I knew him personally so I could tell him please don’t leave!!!! It just won’t be the same. Smh I love him as an actor I just can’t picture him gone!!!!
Oh my goodness this truly hurts my heart to know that Spencer will not be returning as a regular on the show. I really enjoy watching All American and all the cast members. I cried when Tae Diggs left the show.
It wont be good without Spencer the story was mostly about him .he makes the show cant believe it. Not sure if it will be worth watching with out him
