Jason George‘s Station 19 shift may be over, but his work as Ben Warren is far from done.
George will return to Grey’s Anatomy, where his character originated, for the upcoming Season 21, TVLine has confirmed. Our sister site Deadline first reported the news.
His return, as a series regular no less, seems to fly in the face of a mid-May report that the long-running medical drama has been tasked with trimming its budget in par by dialing down the number of episodes in which actors are guaranteed to appear. TVLine recently asked Disney Television Group chief Craig Erwich if Grey‘s might look a bit different next season given such rumblings, but he deferred, saying: “Look, we just celebrated the 20th season, it’s the longest running medical drama on television, and the show is firing on all cylinders creatively. I’m looking forward to next season.”
George’s Ben first showed up on Grey’s Anatomy in Season 6 as an anesthesiologist. He later became a series regular in Season 12 — and Ben eventually decided he wanted to be a firefighter — and George stayed a regular through Season 14 before leaving the medical drama for its spinoff, Station 19.
He played Ben on Station 19 for seven seasons but, because his character is married to Grey’s Dr. Miranda Bailey, he frequently guest-starred on the medical drama during that time.
Earlier this year, news broke that Jake Borelli (who played Grey’s Dr. Levi Schmitt for seven seasons) and Midori Francis (who played Dr. Mika Yasuda for two seasons) both would exit ahead of Season 21.
Are you happy that you’ll be seeing more Ben around the hospital? Hit the comments with your thoughts!
Great news. Ben is a really likeable character and his relationship with Bailey is one of my favorite aspects of the series. I’m excited to see how they move him back into medicine and see more of them together!!
After that finale, Ben may be the only remaining employee at Grey Sloan…
So happy for Ben.
Jason George is a television treasure and I’m so glad he continues to be a presence in the Grey’s Anatomy universe. More please!
With all the firings I guess there’s a lot of opportunity for employment. Good for him but letting yasuda go was a mistake.
Happy for Ben. What about Carina ?
Yasuda living is the worst creative choice ever ! Levi did it’s time. Yasuda in the best new character so far. And firing both queer characters ? Really abc ?
There are other queer characters on Grey’s? Amelia, Jules, Teddy, and Monica (hope she becomes a regular, too).
No gay male characters …..
Looks like Carina is not expected to return regularly unlike Ben, although she has in the past shown up on occasion. So, who knows in the end.
They didn’t fire Midori. Reports indicate she asked to leave.
This is excellent news!
At the same time, raise your hands if you’re surprised by this. I’ll wait.
Well, they will down Levi and Mika once they wrap up their stories in the fall. As both are expected to return for that purpose. So, they need new doctors or older ones with Ben’s return full time. George might be a cheaper option since he’s has not been the whole time. But of course the budget cutting in the end was about reducing the episodes for the actors who return. Main cast will get a reduction of episodes…
I’m happy that Jason George will be back on Grey’s Anatomy, but I wish that Jake Borelli was staying too. I also wish that Mika was staying!
I’m happy for Jason, but I have to admit I’m hoping that this doesn’t mean that more Station 19 characters *cough cough* Maya and Carina *cough* will be moving over as well.
Nothing against the actresses or their characters. I just feel that we’ve seen enough of them.
Great. I bet by the end of season he’ll want to be Chief of Surgery and by next season he’ll decide that he wants to be a flight nurse.
They can reduce budget by getting rid of Teddy & Owen.
I’d much rather see Levi’s story than more of their dreadfulness.
‼️‼️‼️‼️. Yes, Owen had out stayed his welcome the moment he told Cristina in their therapy session. He says it’s not normal to not want children and that seeing as she and Meredith do everything together, Cristina should want a kid, too. Grrr 😡 He needed to be booted right then & now. And Teddy had great chemistry with Henry (RIP) and the trauma counselor Dr Andrew Perkins
Yes glad to have Ben Warren back on Grey’s Anatomy.
