What is Pauley Perrette saying about her NCIS future? Will a Scandal-ous romance continue to sizzle? Is Fairly Legal‘s fate fairly questionable? Are Covert Affairs all in order? Read on for answers to those questions plus other teases from fall and summer shows.
NCIS | Traditionally, NCIS starts up production in early July, so one would hope that word will break soon about Pauley Perrette, Michael Weatherly and Sean Murray signing on for Season 10. But when we saw Perrette on Tuesday night at the Thirst Gala, she was (charmingly) coy. Asked where things stand with her negotiations, all she would say is: “I love my job!” And as for what the premiere might look like, given that most every character had been left in jeopardy, there was little to dish. “We’ve seen no scripts — the cast has seen nothing – so we have no idea what’s going on,” she shared. “We’ll see.” On Perrette’s wish list if she does re-sign is further exploration of Abby’s relationship with her brother, which was touched on last fall. “The fans want that too,” she said, “so I think that will happen.”

Royal Pains | Nancy is among many who wrote in to ask, “Is Jill Flint really gone from Royal Pains?” The short answer is yes, the Africa storyline is legit and will keep the Jills off the USA Network drama for an indeterminate amount of time – though the door has been left open for a someday return. (The longer answer can be found in this TVGuide.com Q&A with the EPs.)
Scandal | Shonda already addressed this hot topic, but it’s still good to hear from the President of the United States himself — aka Tony Goldwyn — that despite whatever agreement was hammered out the First Lady in the Season 1 finale, “We are not done with Fitz and Olivia.” As the actor shared with me, “I have a feeling that the audience is really invested in that relationship, and it’s a great counterpoint to the procedural aspects of the show. Plus it’d be very dissatisfying to go, ‘Oh, OK, that’s not going to work out, so let’s move on.’ No, there’s another round at least for Olivia and Fitz.” Even though the former agreed to steer clear of the latter? “Knowing how Shonda made such bold moves in Season 1, I’m sure she’s got big moves for Season 2,” Goldwyn smiled. “There will be something extreme that throws them back together. That’s my prediction.”

Fairly Legal | My mailbox overfloweth with fretting over the fate of this legal drama, which aired its Season 2 finale earlier on June 15. “I am dying to know if Fairly Legal is going to be renewed,” says one reader, Jenna. “They completely addicted me in Season 2!” The good news is that the rejiggered sophomore run was well received by USA Network, as well. “We love the creative of it, and having Ryan Johnson in there [as Ben] to play off Sarah Shahi’s character has brought a new life to it,” network co-president Chris McCumber told me at the NYC premiere of Political Animals. “So we’re really liking it.” Alas, it’s still to soon to make a call on renewal. “You know us — we take a long time to decide,” McCumber admitted. “We want to see all the numbers come in.”

Covert Affairs | Jacquie writes: “Even as wonderful as you are, I know you can’t bring back The Finder… so could you give me anything on Switched at Birth or Covert Affairs? Please?!” Oh, you had me at “wonderful.” I’m going to choose “B,” Covert Affairs, if only because I just watched the season premiere – though frankly it’s almost impossible to talk about, or to even tease, given what happens in the first five minutes. Let’s just say a lot of changes are afoot, including 24 alum Sarah Clarke stepping in Nina Lena, Annie’s plucky new boss. And yes, Auggie is back from Eritrea, though little is said about that visit with Season 2 squeeze Parker. On the action front, Annie’s work takes her (and the show) to Morocco, where one sequence evokes the latest Mission: Impossible movie. (Think: sand.)
90210 | A couple quick casting notes here for Season 5: Arielle Kebbel is due back for at least a few episodes, which can only mean trouble. “You never know what will happen with Vanessa,” the actress notes, “and I’m looking forward to seeing what she stirs up next. Dun-dun-dun!” Also, Josh Zuckerman, who plays Max, is officially on recurring status. (Good for him that Naomi crashed the wedding, right?)

Warehouse 13 | Ryan raises a question via email: “I read that Syfy will only be airing 10 of the 20 episodes of Warehouse 13‘s fourth season this summer. Are they really going to wait until next summer to air the second half?” I got an answer back on this just as I was putting the Inside Line to bed, and that second wave of 10 episodes is in fact set to launch in April of 2013 — so not quite “next summer.”
The Closer | “I cannot wait for The Closer to start again,” @KitKat5695 tweets. “Any teases you can share?” I’ve got an in-depth, grab-a-Kleenex goodbye Q&A with Kyra Sedgwick coming closer to the TNT hit’s July 9 return, with six final episodes. But for now I’ll remind that Phillip Stroh is back in the premiere and series finale, as slithery as ever, while Kyra and I both lamented that there will be no similar encore for the other One That Got Away, firebug Bill Croelick (played by Jason O’Mara). Oh, and Gabriel has a girrrlfriennnd… though her occupation leaves something to be desired, as far as his detective peers are concerned.

Psych | “You have told us a lot about next season’s episodes,” Emma writes, “but are we going to see Jules’ ex-boyfriend, Scott (played by Josh Braaten)?” I am told that there are no plans at this time for Scott to resurface, Emma, but I can come back at you with this bit of (potentially) good news: Though at the time that I posted our “What Will You Watch?” fall TV polls, I was hearing that Psych might not be back until winter, there is a chance you will see Shawn and Gus sooner. “We’re looking at fall right now,” USA co-prez Chris McCumber told me. “You never know, but fall is looking good.”
If there’s a show you’d like the Inside Line on, email mattmtvguy@gmail.com, and maybe it’ll get some love the next time around! (With reporting by Vlada Gelman and Meg Masters)
Hearing they are airing the first 10 episodes of Warehouse in the summer and then the next 10 in April is almost enough to make me say to heck with watching any of it, the wait for this show is rediculous. I feel like this may cost them some viewers in the long run, and ultimately may cost the fans warehouse.
I completly agree. They did the same thing with Eureka and it was cancelled a couple of seasons later. If they have to split the episodes they should space it out evenly. Also, if they do air the last 10 in April, when will season 5 start if it gets renewed? They already moved Haven to fall, is Warehouse 13 next?
I can’t believe there are only 3 episodes of Eureka left. I also can’t believe Haven is pushed back to fall. le sigh.
Yes, THIS. I seriously hate Siffy anymore & would probably die of shock if they gave any original scripted show a shot over crappy reality shows & wrestling. Sigh.
I completely agree. I don’t understand why they do this. Caprica, for example, was never the best performing show, but as soon as it started to gain some traction they put it on a 9 month break, and then wonder why no one watched the second half. Momentum is important for shows. Suspense is great, but if you wait too long people forget about it and move on.
Brother this is the syfy way, they do this to all their shows bsg, caprica, sgu, eureka, warehouse, etc.. I refuse to ever start watching another show on that piss poor excuse for a network because they really don’t seem to care.about fans.
Nice to know Shonda won’t give up on Fitz and Olivia. It wouldn’t be “Scandal” without my Olitz fix.
I feel the same way D i’m not going to watch a new season spread that far out cause its ridiculous well i’ll watch to see if HG lives or dies but having us wait that long for the entire season is just stupid.
As far as Abby’s brother I wish they had chosen a different actor. He was very strange looking. Seeing as DiNozzo’s character has received extensive coverage for the last year Abby sure deserves it, just get a different actor though.
If I remember correctly, isn’t that Pauly’s real brother?
Actually Daniel Rivas (I think thats his name) is PP’s ex-boyfriend. They have stayed friends and they both have joked about them looking like siblings.
Well they say if people stay together long enough they start to look alike. lol.
Well I have to agree that gut tha plays Abby’s brother is just not appealing to watch. I had heard that Pauley Perrette wanted her friend to play her brother because she felt he looked like her. Number one Pauley he does not look like you and he really is NOT an actor. If Abby’s once a year storyline is that boring story I will be disappointed. Why can’t they include her in one of the current stars of the shows and give her a story. How about an Abby and Ziva plot?
I thought Pauly only had a sister in real life. And, the story line of Abby finding her brother; didn’t it turn out that she wasn’t his biological sister but that she was adopted and had not been told?
The wait until April is almost as bad. I’m not seeing how this could be a good idea. We are still losing 3 episodes this summer and next spring.
““I have a feeling that the audience is really invested in that relationship”
What? I’m not invested in the Olivia and Fitz relationship at all…
* shifts eyes, scurries off to re-watch episode 6 *
He was referring to Fitz and the First Lady, not Fitz and Olivia.
I am counting the days until the premieres of Anger Management, Wilfred, Perception, Warehouse 13, Destination Truth and Haunted Highway.
Plus, Covert Affair & White Collar
So… the inside line about NCIS is that P.Perrette knows nothing. Ehem.
Matt, thank you for keeping us up-to-date on Fairly Legal. Is there anything we loyal fans can do to attempt to sway the network into a Season 3?
YES let us know! I really got sucked in by Season 2 :)
God yes, what is with the networks & canceling good shows lately?
They really should star reading some of these comments, maybe then they’d stop wondering why they’re losing so many viewers…
Am I the only person who thinks that the NCIS producers are genius for keeping the contract negotiations under wraps? If they release who re-signed and who didn’t then we’d know exactly who died. I suspect they have already come to their agreements and the “negotiations” are just to mislead the press so that the premier is truly shocking
I had the same thought. I love it!!
I thought this too, my biggest fear though is that DiNozzo is toast :(
Ditto – but if Ziva goes bye-bye, I would be the first to stand up and cheer!
Actually I think it’s Michael Weatherly’s time to move on if he is really going to try to be a star. He is almost 50. After last year where the producers spent the entire year with his backstory ( the first show with him in a robe and reminiscsing about his life) and the whole ( I rescued a black boy from the fire ) thing. I just found that whole fire thing very offensive.
Thank you .OH yeah that really bugged the heck out of me. Do we have any other actors other than Tony D on NCIS. Whatever happened to the Israelis. Every year we have to painfully sit through the murderous Robert Wagner and his bad acting.
Robert Wagner should be put in jail and not starring in NCIS or being idolized by Michael Weatherly. To me that is a slap in the face.
He is 43, not 49. And Michael seems perfectly happy where he is. He has a new baby too. I think Gary Glasberg set out to repair Tony’s character last season and mature him a bit.
I think everyone will be back. They would be nuts to mess with success.
I just hope that next year Gary Glasberg realizes that there is more to the cast then Gibbs, Tony and Vance. I’m tired of most of the episodes being about those three. Even the Abby/brother story, which is the only thing Abby got all last season, was a ‘B’ story in the episode and McGee’s grandmother spent more time fawning over Gibbs and Tony than giving us insight into McGee. Mix it up with some more Abby stories, and McGee and Ducky and even some of Ziva that doesn’t involve her mooning over getting married and having a family. She’s become a ninja Harlequin heroine.
I’m nor happy that SyFy is splitting up Warehouse 13, but I guess it’s better than cancelling it, as they did Eureka.
Ben may have brought a new life to Fairly Legal but the Ben/Kate ‘romance’ is a huge turn-off for me. Kate’s main problem is her immaturity and self-involvement and Ben is that times ten. The result is like watching a pair of middle-schoolers at playtime. Justin encouraged Kate to grow up, Ben appeals to her immature self.
I guess I’ll keep watching for Lauren, Justin and Leo, until the Kate/Ben stuff gets too awful.
I completely agree with all of your points!
I agree with you about Fairly Legal, Kath. I am not impressed with Ben at all, and think the so-called romance was suddenly manufactured out of the blue. I love Leo, Lauren, and Justin, and if Justin is gone, I’m not going to watch it at all. I can’t stand the idea of Kate and Ben together. This isn’t a toddler’s playgroup; these two are too old to be acting this way, and immaturity is a poor reason to be compatible. Comparing Justin to Ben is like comparing the Sistine Chapel to the dingy corner of my basement where the kitty litter box sets.
Love Ben. Ryan Johnson is a fab actor! The only reason why I continued to watch Fairly Legal is becos of the chemistry between Ben/Kate.
I get it why there are viewers who love Kate/Justin pairing becos both are very good looking. But I did not see the chemistry there at all, they were always touch & go in their relationships. Aesthetically, Kate/Justin make a great on screen couple but from an angle of personality & deepening relationship, they fail miserably.
But to me, Ben has loads of personality waiting to be revealed slowly, multiple layers in fact. Ben is a very interesting character.
I wouldn’t mind Ben being revealed as a complex character because at this point, to me he’s an annoying jerk, although I like Ryan Johnson. (I preferred him as the character he played on Sea Patrol.)
Just keep him away from a romantic relationship with Kate because it makes both characters intolerable.
Personally I like Ben, just not with Kate. I actually line him better with Lauren. He might just be waft she needs to lighten up. And she can calm him down.
I thought it was really interesting to see the two characters progress from being self obsessed to beginning to mature. Ben is starting to think of other peoples feelings and realise theres more to life than just himself and money. I think Kate will start to calm down a bit too.
Very interesting characters, could see the romance slipping in slowly, which was good to watch. Love it!
love the Ben – Kate relationship
I love the Ben and Kate thing. Now that they live next to each other I can’t wait. Missed season 1 so maybe people got attached to seeing her with her husband. Her and Ben can be amazing together. Please do 3 with Ben and Kate. I think Lauren and Justin have something.
For me “Ben” turned me off of Fairly Legal. I liked Justin better.
Counting the days until the premiere of Leverage.
The schedule split is dumb but better than canceled. I’m not quite getting used to these shorter stints (Fairly Legal seemed to just be getting started..) but what the heck, the idiot repeat cycles of the “main” network shows is almost as bad even with my TiVos doing most of the work.
I honestly could not give less of a crap about Abby’s brother. I seem to be in the minority, but I find Abby-centric episodes really difficult to get through. Small doses of her are fine, and sometimes even enjoyable. But whole episodes focused on her? Arhg! Change the channel, Marge! I guess I’m not a real fan.
I can’t say that I’m a big fan of Abby’s either. I like her in small doses. Perhaps I wouldn’t mind an Abby-centric episode if it focused on Abby trying to actually change her image. After 9 years, that Goth stuff has gotten really old. Of all the characters, she is the only one who hasn’t changed, in my opinion.
Agreed. She hasn’t changed because no one ever calls her out on her ‘woman child’ behavior. After nine years of the same thing I find it alternatively boring and irritating.
NCIS is so predictable and formulaic, I always welcome the occasional Abby or Ducky episodes.
The last time there was an whole episode that featured Abby was two seasons ago. Her brother story, which was the only thing she got all last season, was a ‘B’ story. Maybe it’s time the writers started thinking of her as a whole character rather than comic relief.
Could not disagree more. Abby is why I keep watching this show, and I’ll take any Abby centric episode I can get. I’ll take a how Abby met Gibbs/started working at NCIS over the brother stuff though.
Does April for Warehouse 13 have anything to do with that new show Defiance? I think that’s coming out in April. Maybe they want to launch the show with Warehouse 13 to attract viewers.
That make sense since Jaime Murray (H.G. Wells) has been cast in Defiance. It still sucks…but atleast there maybe some logic to the madness.
That makes no sense practically….Cable shows shoot in very little time, like 4 months or less. She should be able to do both easily.
That wasn’t the point I was trying to make. My point was, having Warehouse 13 air before Defiance with a former Warehouse 13 cast member would help draw fans of Warehouse 13 to the new show.
So if there is a third season of Fairly Legal, we would still be stuck with the Ben character? Oh well, that’s it then. I don’t see how USA thinks that this addition to the show actually worked.
Sarah Clarke is joining Covert Affairs? Sweet!!! Loved her as Nina in 24. I just hope that they don’t think about putting Annie and Auggie together romantically.
I’ve been reading a lot of fans do NOT like Ben. I think the network needs to think about this. I would REALLY LIKE to see more of Judge Nicastro (GERALD MCRANEY). He is a great actor….one of my very favorites. He makes me smile as the judge. “I’m old. I’m not blind.” Heehee!
Thank you for the update in Fairly Legal! It’s great to get a comment from the co-President on the show since all we fans have been hearing is “no news”. I LOVE the addition of Ben and clearly many others do as well and I look forward to seeing more of him and Sarah in Season 3…so there better be one! :-P
Getting rid of Jill on Royal Pains was a bad idea. Divya/Jill are so much more interesting that Hank/anyone.
Hopeful news about “Fairly Legal”. I’m in love with Ben’s character. Ryan is such a great actor – he is sort of a comical relief and he also plays emotions well, so he is perfect for the show… plus, he and Sarah have an amazing chemistry, bring it back and soon!
yeay-MAX-is-BACK@90210!
This split on Warehouse 13 still sucks (why such a long hiatus on the network’s most popular show?), but at least it’s not until July like we all feared. If they MUST do a split, I think starting the second half during network TV’s winter hiatus would’ve been great, but hey, this is SyFy’s crazy boat.
We’ll just have to make sure to watch the show and make sure it doesn’t encounter the same fate as Eureka.
This is exactly what they did to Eureka before they canceled it. It’s Syfy’s way of making the fans feel like they are getting two seasons without actually renewing the show. We end up with only 20 episodes over two years instead of 26.
Thanks for the Covert Affairs scoop but we need MORE! Does this mean Auggie is available and Joan is out? Where is Ben? Please…give us more@!!!!
As far as Abby’s brother I really wish they would use some new ideas. Yes it worked with Ziva and Tony’s backstory was done extensively for 2 seasons. Now let’s start being original before people get really bored. I love Pauley and her character is the most original on tv but also her NCIS stories are really the most boring. While she seems like a terrific person her character really does not hold an entire show. She would be missed if she was not signed for another year but her brother’s storyline can be put on the back burner. Give me the Israeli’s or the Baltimore kid and keep Abby for the comedy relief.
Agree in all phases. I think they almost overdid the Tony’ eps this season and last with the dreaded EJ eps , the first episode of season 9 Tony in a robe. I did think the fire episode was well done though. I think it’s time to explore some of the other characters. I would like to see a couple of Palmer eps ( he really gives a freshness to the show). Not sure I cared too much for the last two Abby episodes though. I think Abby and Tony are their best doing comedic things. Just my opinion. I love that they added a couple of younger actors like Dornagut and Palmer. Tony and Abby are almost 50 now. I can’t believe I said that.
James, L — Actually Michael Weatherly will turn 44 on July 8th as he was born in 1968, and if I am correct, Pauley turned 43 (1969) earlier this year. That is not “almost” 50. If they were 48/47, then I might agree with that. It is interesting that a lot of people see them “older” than they are. I thought Pauley P was in her mid-late 30’s, and same with Weatherly. Then again, I go by my looks, lol.
Ahh no. I’m tired of so much Tony, and if I never hear about Ziva’s family again, I’ll be thrilled. That storyline needs to disappear forever.
Some of my favorite episodes are Abby centered. Bloodbath is probably one of the best in the entire series. Frame-Up had some good Abby time and Tony time.
