Two-time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender is coming back to the small screen, by way of Paramount+ With Showtime‘s (fka Showtime) The Agency, TVLine has learned.

An adaptation of the hit French drama Le Bureau des Légendes, The Agency (fka The Department) is described as a political espionage thriller centered on Fassbender’s Martian, a covert CIA agent ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station.

“When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites,” the synopsis reads. “His career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart, hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage.”

UPDATE: It was announced on June 26 that Emmy winner Jeffrey Wright has also joined The Agency, in the role of Henry, the Director of Operations and mentor to Fassbender’s Martian. “Jeffrey Wright doesn’t just portray characters – he inhabits them completely, infusing each role with raw, emotional power and profound, psychological insight,” said Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global Co-CEO, in a statement.

Production is now underway in London on the series, which counts George Clooney and Grant Heslov (Argo) among its executive producers. The project was first ordered straight to series back in February 2023.

“Michael Fassbender is one of the most gifted actors of our time,” said Showtime President and CEO Chris McCarthy in a statement. “He brings a gravitas and nuanced complexity to every character he inhabits, which is why we are so excited for him to star in The Agency as we start to roll out our new slate of Showtime originals.” (Among those originals is a Dexter prequel series, starring Patrick Gibson as a young Dexter Morgan.)

Prior to his successful film career, which has thus far earned him Oscar nods for 12 Years a Slave and Steve Jobs, Fassbender held roles on TV series such as Band of Brothers, Holby City and Hex. The Agency, however, will mark his first television project since the U.K. miniseries The Devil’s Mistress in 2008.
