CBS warhorse NCIS will be back for a 19th season — though it will potentially feature less Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
The network announced on Thursday that it has renewed its longest-running drama for Season 19. According to The Hollywood Reporter, original cast member and executive producer Mark Harmon will be back as team leader Special Agent Gibbs, but it’s not yet been determined how many episodes will include him. Similarly, an episode count for Season 19 hasn’t been finalized.
As revealed at the close of the series’ March 16 episode, Gibbs was suspended indefinitely by Director Leon Vance, after brutally assaulting a suspected dog abuser.
Word of Harmon’s potentially reduced NCIS presence swirled at the time of sister series NCIS: New Orleans‘ cancellation. THR.com reported that with his contract expiring this spring, Harmon was poised to call it a day and hang up his stitched-logo NCIS cap. But when he learned that his doing so would result in the mothership series as a whole being cancelled, and many people losing their jobs, he entered talks to return in a limited capacity. New for Season 19, meanwhile, will be series regular Katrina Law (Hawaii Five-0, Arrow), who will first surface in this season’s final two episodes. She will be playing NCIS REACT Special Agent Jessica Knight, a “formidable” woman whose specialty is hostage negotiations. Raised by a single mother, and married to a stay-at-home dad who is raising their infant son, Jessica is described as “sharp, athletic, tough” and “fiercely tenacious,” but she also possesses a “wry sense of humor.”
Law’s casting came on the heels of Maria Bello exiting NCIS after three seasons as forensic psychologist Jack Sloane. (In the March 2 episode, Jack decided to stay put in Afghanistan after completing an op, to help out the local community.)
NCIS was one of five CBS series to get picked up for an additional season on Thursday, along with S.W.A.T., Blue Bloods, Magnum P.I. and Bull.

Well, NCIS with less Gibbs is a recipe for disaster. The only thing worse would be to put it in the death slot after Sports Sunday. I do, however, very much like Katrina Law and look forward to her on the series. Too bad she isn’t replacing Bishop.
Bishop rocks! She is the best part of NCIS. Who I want gone is Torres.
Oh like Torres but if Gibbs leaves so do I.
Yup, me too. I looked forward to my weekly “Gibbs fix”. The stories were mainly the same. Gibbs made the show my favorite. Now it’ll be Resident ,Alien. Love that one too.
Yeah, never liked Torres myself. They just took all the worst bits of DiNozzo as a character and changed him from Italian to Latino.
Was always the case though that Harmon would eventually move on, and the show would end at that time. Same for SVU, when Mariska Hargitay has had enough it’s done too.
Miss DeNozo. Good script w Ziva ending.
Torres doesn’t fit. Send him to Hawwaii
Don’t take it too hard. Lindy’s just a boomer who yearns for the days when school bully Ziva was around always getting her way. How anyone can call what she and Tony had love is beyond me her threatening to shoot him after she attacked him while his was injured that is clear abuse.
So glad Tony left he is the epitome of bullying! I don’t like the constant bullying of his partner! This should not be tolerated on tv or anywhere! Never liked his childish behavior for a grown man! Not cute!
Both of them were bullies in a toxic relationship. Tony at least knew to look out for the team and knew Gibbs was boss. I never liked Ziva was how she always got her way if strong arm force didn’t work it was emotional manipulation. She made Cersei Lannister and Betty Draper look like Mother Theresa and Lady Diana.
🤣 I’m sorry You have the right to feel the way you do, it’s just I know men that are Grandfathe’s and still act like children Most men do act like Tony I thought Tony was hilarious Guess a different time It’s sad that future generations think Tony was abusive I think he just knew everyone is not special and deserves a trophy
FYI, nothing is in a “death slot” on Sundays for millions of us on the West Coast…
People said it would be a disaster when Ziva left, then when DiNozzo left, then when Ducky disappeared, and now this. It will be fine. McGee will step up. All will be fine.
I hope that this will give McGee a chance to shine and they don’t bring in someone new to lead. That would be a bad sign.
As far as I am concerned, no Gibbs no show. I am done.
Ditto. I shudder to think what the show would be like if they brought in a new character as team leader. No Gibbs, no NCIS.
McGee may be good in his role but he is not a leader. In the last episode where the team was doing Covid protocols Tim hesitated much too long, mulling over command decisions before acting.
Darn the torpedoes and full speed ahead. Less let’s consider the ramifications before acting.
Unfortunately (IMO) that’s bad writing. Every time McGee appears to grow as a leader they regress him to the old nervous Tim.
.
They did the same thing with DiNozzo frequently, every time he looked to be maturing they’d make him be juvenile again a few episodes later.
Oh come on if Gibbs leaves the show they might as well cancel it. He makes the show. I can only say that it is over for me. It is like Chicago PD losing Alvin and then Antonio, I hardly ever watch that anymore. Lose good characters, lose me as a viewer.
NCIS should honestly take a 2 season renewal. Less Mark Harmon is going to hurt the show, they should commit him and the show 2 seasons to wrap things up with the 20th season.
We all need to keep in mind Mark Harmon is probably ready to move on from Gibbs. Plus he wants to do more producing and directing, even in the franchise. I say CBS should wrap up with 20, give everyone a chance to say goodbye and give producers a chance to properly craft a way to close out this ground breaking show.
SVU, NBC and the other MH, Mariska Hargitay need to do the same thing and close out SVU at season 25.
my thoughts exactly 20 years he can have a limited footprint on the next season and a half then do the last six or seven shows to conclude the run LJ Gibbs can retire in dignity and with style. Heck he could set up the next spin off and we’d all be happy
It sounds like this is more of a proverbial gentleman’s cancellation. CBS is giving them a renewal mainly so that the cast and production team time to get their bearings and plan out their next moves.
I am excited to have NCIS back for season 19. It’s going to be fun to have Katrina Law join the series as a full time NCIS agent. And another season with Agent Bishop, she rocks.
Can’t stand her in Hallmark movies. She has that Mariska Hargitay sneer.
What?? Oh, well let’s run her over for an imagined (in your mind)”sneer”. Wow…
I’ve been waiting to hear this for what seems like forever. I hope we get a full 24 episode order for the new season.
Don’t see the point of the show without him. Would not watch. Only just begun again after years re no Ziva then no Abby, but Harmon really IS the show. The secondary characters, the newer actors, nothing like the cast of years ago. Wouldn’t be worth the space on my DVR. The writing, crime procedural with Navy. Basic. This dog problem. My friend died when a management changed and rescheduling would have forced him to stop his 2nd job, his true love, dog-walking. He lost his benefits and stopped his heart meds. Anger & depression caused by all that contributed. CBS should think hard about the effect this will have on the man as well as the show.
I hear complaints about old nervous tim and old immature dinozzo. Remember people that in real life people do not change overnight. Growth is always two steps forward one step back. Its only normal for this to happen. Next year Tim will lead the team. torres will be lead agent. Katrina Law will be part of the team and someone new will step in. Gibbs will have his own storyline that intersects at times with the team. Ducky will make the occasional appearance and Jimmy and Kasie will be their usual self. The show will be good and will survive just as it has with the losses of Kate, Jenny, Ziva, Tony, Abby, and now Bishop.
I don’t see NCIS without Gibbs being much of a success. They should tie up any loose ends, give every character a chance to say goodbye and call it a wrap after season 19. This show has been the highlight of Harmon’s career and I think he owes his castmates and loyal viewers one more full season. The writers can figure a way out of his current situation. It’s television. If they could bring Ziva back from the dead, they can get Gibbs out of his suspension. As a side note, I will miss NCIS New Orleans. It had a whole different vibe. They had too many cast changes that also changed the dynamics of the show…not necessarily in a positive way.
I watched NCIS from the beginning and will probably watch it until the end. Hope it’s a sweet send off without killing off any main characters.
As long as Gibbs will be in more season 19 episodes than Ducky, who we barely see this season, I will be watching. Less of Gibbs is better than no Gibbs
If Gibbs goes the show goes
I think they do not want to reveal how much Gibbs, which I assume will be nearly fulltime or fulltime because it gives away what happens with Gibbs’s job currently on NCIS. Given his law breaking nature, moving to Director is out. And he’s not just going to be around, and not involved in a case of a week, he’s not Ducky, so he’ll probably come back to the team. The teams gets bumped back to Team A status. And they might end next season.
I think they should have announced that it would be back for two more seasons so they could reach 20. And then say that season 20 would be the end. It’s had a mighty run and I think it’s time to head off into the sunset.
What about NCIS LA

So glad Tony left he is the epitome of bullying! I don’t like the constant bullying of his partner! This should not be tolerated on tv or anywhere! Never liked his childish behavior for a grown man! Not cute!
I wont watch when Gibbs leaves
If the COVID pandemic wasn’t going on right now forcing shortened seasons across the board, that would be NCIS: Los Angeles going off the air this year, and NCIS: New Orleans would get one more season. NCIS: LA getting a short final season in 2021-22? Not ruling out that possibility. I’ve been waiting on that “Hanna, S.” episode for several years already.
Also, I would love to see SEAL Team move to TNT if it got cancelled by CBS, but I’ve heard on Deadline about TNT moving away from scripted series some time ago.
I would love to see NCI: LA go away ahd NCIS: NOLA remain. LA is getting too complicated for them to air two shows then expect one to remember what’s happening when the next set of two is televised two to four weeks later. And NOLA has a lot more personality than LA, especially since Heddy left. …,.,
maybe they should transfer Dwayne Pride from NOLA to DC; the NOLA office isn’t closing, just the show is cancelled so announce a promotion for a new SSA in NOLA as background. Scott Bakula needs a new job anyway now and he’d be a better team leader than MaGee[no offence, Tim]. that may save the show when MH leaves, CBS already said when he leaves, the show ends
Pleased for the renewal – long live NCIS (with Harmon’s Gibbs!)
Ncis needs to go off the air while it is still on top
Limited Gibbs is better than nothing. Not by much though. Will make for a slow death. Anchor material like Hotch was for Criminal Minds.
Same song, second verse
Less or no Harmon will be the final blow and the end of the series. I’m surprised it lasted this long after Michael Weatherly left.
I’ve been watching NCIS since the beginning, without Gibbs, I’d probably stop watching the show as well
If Gibbs does not return in a full role I may not watch the program. He is what makes the show so good.
I’m very sad to see Mom go. The show is very well written (speaking from experience).
I vote to keep the All Rise and Bull. I am hooked on both shows.
