Fox’s medical drama The Resident is staffing up, promoting Malcolm-Jamal Warner — who recurred as arrogant cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. AJ Austin — to series regular for Season 2, our sister site Deadline reports.
Additionally, the show has upped actor Glenn Morshower, so prepare to see more of Marshall Winthrop, the estranged father of Conrad (Matt Czuchry) who became the new chairman of the board at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital in the Season 1 finale.
The Resident returns this fall, airing Mondays at 8/7c.

Love Malcom in this role!!!!
Everything about him, his looks, swag, voice…he’s so perfect for that role. 😍
Not sure how I feel about this. I could take this arrogant character in small doses but not okay with watching him be an arse full time, lol.
^ This!
This, and his antics don’t provide the humor that, say, a certain pill-popping, cane-wielding diagnostician did during the previous decade.
Still, it was intriguing to see Malcolm pop up as he did, and I’m of the mind that it would have stuck out more if he’d suddenly disappeared, so…I’ll come down on the side of hoping the character gets fleshed out better and doesn’t stay in the one-dimensional arrogant box.
he’s entertaining, and some drama for what’s her character’s name?
I don’t find belligerent behaviour in large doses entertaining.
Ditto
I agree. Totally spoiles the show for me. Too much grand-standing and too much Theo.
I love this. Yes, Dr. Austin is conceited and annoying, but he’s very sneaky in getting the best out of the people he works with. He got Mina to push past her personal feelings.
As for Conrad’s dad, that will be fun to watch. Conrad hated going to him for help in the first place, so Marshall may now want something in return.
Hopefully they tone MJW’s character down. He’s so over the top obnoxious.
Also, is Melina K done? Have they announced her leaving? Can’t see how to keep her incorporated into the show.
Great! Thought this was an excellent new show and both actors were great additions. Happy to see more of them!
Yipes. Love The Resident but Malcolm’s character is a very difficult aquired taste for me. Maybe he’ll tone it down a notch – or 10?
The Resident is awesome, one of they best hospital drama’s since Grey’s and ER def my new favorite over TGD and Greys.
yeh… but I sure wouldn’t want to be a patient there… yikes!!
These are two fantastic promotions!!!
Man I love this show so much. This is the first time I’ve ever enjoyed a medical drama.
Looking forward to When Calls The heart Christmas movie!!!
Reprisal sounds interesting.
