It’s not TV, it’s HBO. We all remember the catchphrase that the cable network managed to make as ubiquitous as “I want my MTV” almost a quarter of a century ago, don’t we? It brilliantly implied that HBO’s original series were head and shoulders above those on basic cable or (cough) the Big Four.
But, of course, not every show that HBO has produced has stood the test of time — or even lasted long enough to complete the test. When we think of the cabler, we think of its hits, whether they clicked with viewers (Sex and the City), critics (The Wire) or both (The Sopranos).
However, there have also been misses aplenty over the years. John From Cincinnati, anyone? Camping?

That being the case, and because we’ll glom on to any idea that might distract us from our grief over the endings of Veep and Game of Thrones, we’ve decided look back at HBO’s shows — all 97 of ’em! — and rank them from stinkiest to sublimest. Included in this countdown are series both limited and un-, oldies like Dream On and The Kids in the Hall and shows that are so new, they still have that fresh-out-of-the-package smell.
To check out the countdown, click on the gallery above or go here for direct access. Then hit the comments with the series that you think should’ve placed higher (or lower).
My HBO favorites: Big Little Lies, Game of Thrones, Sex and the City, Veep, and the Newsroom. The Newsroom would probably be on 1 for me, followed by GoT and Big Little Lies. Then Veep and SATC.
Deadwood way too low. Has to be top five. Doesn’t matter how many seasons.
You forgot to mention Six feet under. It was one of HBO’s better shows.
It’s #11
6FU is number 11. I would have rated it higher. Still is BEST FINALE EVER.
Bored to Death, Eastbound and Down, Barry, Curb and Silicon Valley are way too low. Barry and Curb have to be top 10, Silicon Valley top 15 or 20
I could quibble about a lot of the rankings, but seriously Tales from the Crypt and Oz need to be higher.
I assumed “1st & 10” would be near the bottom, but it seems it was forgotten completely.
I would have ranked Six Feet Under even higher than #11
My thoughts exactly. I personally would rate it above the Sopranos but it should definitely be in the top 5.
The Leftovers is in the top 10, where it deserves to be!!! Loved that show, which introduced me to the amazing Carrie Coon!
The Wire is the BEST ever. Would love a follow-up from David Simon (it is the age of the revival right) to see the seedy side of West Baltimore today.
The Sopranos should be #1
The Wire is easily the best TV show I have ever seen
Tales from the Crypt is way too low.
Oz is #30??? 30??? Girls is ahead of Oz? I love you to death, TV Line, but this is just plain wrong. Oz should easily be in the top 10. It’s not just an amazing show but also was HBO’s first big scripted TV show… their first foray into “It’s not TV; it’s HBO.” For that alone it deserves to be way higher than it is, but it’s also brilliant and one of the best shows ever, period.
I was just coming to comment about this. I can see how people could like most of the others over Oz, but no way is Girls of all things better than it.
1 and 2 are spot on. Great list!
Sex and the City should easily be in the top 5!!!!
John From Cincinnati was ahead of its time
Divorce, Entourage, Arliss, Dream on, Silicon Valley need to be ranked MUCH HIGHER. Insecure is 14 while Curb is 16, no way. Insecure is a favorite but Curb is a lot better. Big Love at 35 is too low.
Where is Chernobyl? Currently airing but its good
Band of Brothers will always be #1 in my book. It should at least be in ge top 5!
*the top 5
Agreed. Superbly done drama and the mini-interviews with the vets – just brilliant tv. Glad Generation Kill got a decent placement too.
Band of Brothers would be my #1. Just incredible from start to finish.
Arli$$ is way, way too low.
band of brothers is top 3 easy, that series is unbelievable
Yeah. The Wire is easily the greatest TV show of all time. Season 4 is straight up life changing. Excellent choice.
No way is ROME No. 39. That one is my favorite.
I seem to of forgotten a few HBO shows like first and 10 not necessarily the news the Tracy ullman show
