9-1-1′s Ryan Guzman Reflects on Eddie’s ‘Surreal’ Affair Ahead of Season 7 Finale — What’s Next?
Eddie Diaz has some explaining to do.
Last week’s episode of 9-1-1 ended with Marisol and Christopher coming home to find Eddie in the arms of another woman, one who looked suspiciously like his late wife Shannon — hence that heartbreaking “Mom?” Christopher let out upon his return. From the moment Eddie began his emotional affair with Kim, he knew he was playing with fire, but he never expected his son to get burned in the process.
“He was never thinking about Christopher,” Ryan Guzman tells TVLine. “He was never thinking about anything other than exploring this dreamlike scenario, and kind of rewording what a lie is because he wanted to believe the lie was the truth. It was never about anything other than Eddie’s own indulgence.”
The whole experience was a wake-up call for Eddie, with Guzman calling the scene “crazy” and adding that it was “surreal” to play the whole scenario out with everyone involved.
“He’s just thinking, ‘Oh my God, I’ve screwed up my kid again, and I just can’t get out of my own way,'” Guzman says. “It’s like each time he tries to do something for himself, he takes something from Christopher. It was an out-of-body experience, and I tried to exemplify that in the best, most grounded way possible. It became the ultimate challenge for both [Devin Kelley] and I. Luckily she’s such an incredible actress, so I got to play off of her and she gave me a lot.”
Guzman also isn’t the least bit surprised that Kim, an actress in LA, would be so willing to portray Eddie’s dead wife and come back for a therapy session. He’s just surprised she didn’t fully pivot to life coaching.
It also remains to be seen whether Marisol can forgive Eddie’s indiscretions. “She was almost a nun, so she could be very forgiving,” Guzman says. “No, I don’t know how you come back from seeing your man cuddling up with another woman with tears in their eyes.”
And that’s not even taking Bobby into consideration. In addition to everything else they’re facing this week, the 118 will also rally around Peter Krause’s character, who remains hospitalized after narrowly escaping his burning home. Prayers are welcome.

god all I want for tomorrow’s finale is hopefully not to be in a bad mood at the end of it (and go back to the crazy 911 scenarios for next season)

The final is going to be a heartjerking episode. Please don’t let Bobby die, I can’t handle that. I don’t care much about Marisol but Eddie did her and Chris dirty. If she has some selfrespect she’ll walk away. What should he tell her? “I’m sorry I’m seeing this women behind your back who looks like my Ex-wife just to live in some weird fantasy?”. No thank you
For Eddie’s sake, he needs to be by himself. He has been trying to find a connection based on a fantasy and he doesn’t know what he truly wants. Until he figures out how to heal, he needs to be single. But I hope he is able to find comfort in the form of his loved ones. And I NEED Bobby to survive!

Andy literally just mentioned always yearning for Buddie in last week’s recap…blame the show for how they set this up (mainly for keeping Marisol past 7×05, because that is the most unnecessary part here…this story would still have been juicy without her, but I digress). Anyway, I just hope that they actually explore how Eddie romanticized his relationship with Shannon. Tim Minear and Ryan have both mentioned it in interviews, and I would be upset if they abandon the thread in season 8.
What a difference a year makes. Knowing you’re renewed for next season by Episode 4 gives genius Tim Minear time to create havoc for many. Thankful he’s back!! Marisol can depart asap. Kim will too. Poor Chris and Eddie – no Bobby to run to, Buck will be there if Eddie allows him but he has a separate life as he discovers his new world. Henren fighting for their child, Athena going full bore cop to get who tried to kill them. Madney are going to help Hen. Amir has served his purpose. He can leave. Eddie, Athena & Bobby are going to be affected for much of next season I’m afraid. If Bobby lives he may never get back to LAFD. New challenges everywhere ahead for S8. Thank you Tim!!!!
I don’t think anyone really wants him to work things out with Marisol.
I prefer that Eddie and Marisol end their relationship.
He’s got a lot of work to

It did not work before, and it will not work in the future. As for him working with Kim, this is a disaster and will not work.
We all see the same shwo and we all know who wants Eddie! I can’t wait for tomorrow’s episode, and I hope there is hope for buddie fans.
I might get downvoted for this, but I don’t so much care for Eddie. IMO, he is just so boring. Sure he’s a sweet guy and all, but that and having Christopher is pretty much his whole identity.
Yes, that is your opinion, but what we know about Eddie is that he became Christopher’s father and he was not ready. He got married when he was young and moved to the army. It doesn’t have to be without Christopher. Just like when he realized he needed to go back to being a firefighter after quitting because it made him happy his best self at the time. He needs to figure that out again. Because if he figures out what make him happy & at his best he’ll be his best for Christopher & Christopher will be at his happiest. IE if you look at scenes where it’s just Eddie, Christopher, & Buck the 3 look their happiest.
Honestly, I’ve never been a big Eddie fan either. He’s alright but hardly the most interesting character (speaking only for myself here, people).

The suddenly gay for you trope would be ridiculous here I have to say that if the writers won’t let Eddie be single then Buck is definatley the best choice between the three love interests.
The problem for me is that there has been compelling evidence for many seasons about Eddie’s repression in all aspects and that he may be experiencing comp het – feeling like he was performing when dating, not shown as enjoying flirting or sex with women in the same way as Buck. But this season they have gone back and forth in how they portrayed that. It was almost like they were told that if Buck comes out, they have to double down on Eddie “being straight.” Many of the scenes with Marisol and Kim/Shannon were so weird and didn’t feel authentic. Although I do believe he loved Shannon and enjoyed being with her to an extent. One thing that seasons 5/6 did well were set up a potential sexuality story for Eddie and I hope they aren’t moving away from that because Buck has one.

I guess my point is it wouldn’t feel “sudden” based on history overall but recent history is a bit wonky. I agree that no matter what Buck and Eddie are the most fulfilling partners for each other in a narrative sense/airtime and in terms of chemistry.
I am not impressed by this season at all. I don’t particularly care for Buck new gayness. No, I am not homophobic. Have many……gay friends, just think is pushed on. The whole story with Eddy is just silly. He didn’t have a great marriage to begin with. Acting childish and not thinking of his son

I want the show to go back to the old format. The show is called 911 and there has barely been any 911 calls this entire season. I miss the days when the show started off with this crazy 911 scenario. Also, the whole Eddie & ex-wife scenario got very confusing. I wish they would have never brought out this storyline.
Definitely a plot twist although Marisol seen him with Kim I’m sure after the explanation that Eddie is going to give her she will forgive him.. he needs time to find himself so I’m hoping he will probably break it off with her and think about fixing the relationship with his son
Really hoping Eddie gets his own coming out storyline. He’s been queer coded since the beginning. Really hope they stop sticking Buck and Eddie with these lackluster love interests and finally put them together.
Buck belongs with Tommy. Hoping that Lou Ferrigno Jr becomes a permanent member of the cast in S8!
Buck and Tommy have shared a total of five minutes of screentime, I’m really curious what makes you think they belong together? Putting aside Eddie, I think their chemistry is actually among the lowest of Buck’s canon love interests. It’s fine for a first relationship but does not need to extend far into season 8. He ain’t getting off the hamster wheel this way.
I feel like Buck’s chemistry with love interests tracks with their order of appearance on the show. Abby and Ali were the strongest, Taylor was okay but better as a friend, and Natalia and Tommy can best be described as “meh.” Then the thing with Lucy…poor Arielle Kebbel, I like her and they did NOT use her properly 😭 Excited for her lifeguard show, though!
Absolutely ludicrous to say Buck belongs with him. We have seen nothing special or interesting that sets them apart from his other relationships. It’s awesome that he discovered something new about himself and I’m excited for his bisexuality but let him explore that as a single man. Tommy is too bland for him. Not to mention there are way more interesting characters like Ravi, Karen, Josh who deserve more time.

We’re big 911 fans having watched from the start. While some of the past storylines have been a bit out there, the writers always pulled them off.. until now. I find this whole Shannon doppelganger storyline absolutely absurd. This is some daytime soap opera stuff. Perhaps if Eddie were in a coma and this was happening in his mind..it might be alright. What I hope doesn’t happen is Bobby dying or retiring. Peter Krause is amazing in this role. Angela Bassett’s Athena Grant is life goals! I love her.
Eddie NEVER thinks about Christopher. Christopher’s psuedo-dad is 10000% than Eddie. Eddie is MY least favorite character on the show. He adds nothing, and they can write him out and leave Christopher.
I have watched this show from the start. I don’t think it would be the same without Bobby.
Eddie journey is always phicological. It looks like he always need therapy for almost every aspect of his life… just like he doesn’t know himself and he has to conquer every bit of his self. This very weird storyline makes sense, because he really need to say goodbye to his dead wife. He’s a responsability driven guy (his country, his wife, his son, his job. He has this tough journey to make and he’s clearly not ready for an adult relationship. we just had a glimpse of what his life was when he was in the army. Maybe, one day, they’ll explore that more.
And I really want Christopher to stay. This show needs him
