Warning: The following contains spoilers for Gen V Episode 4. Proceed at your own risk!

Supernatural fans who tuned in to this week’s episode of Gen V were surprised with a very different (and naked) side of Alexander Calvert, who co-starred in the last three seasons of the aforementioned CW series. Then again, this is the Boys universe, where Supernatural leading man Jensen Ackles plays Grade-A supe jerk Soldier Boy, who made his present-day debut sans clothing, so are you really all that shocked?

Calvert became a fan favorite on Supernatural as the Nephilim Jack, who later evolved into — spoiler alert if you still haven’t watched the penultimate episode! — Heaven’s new God. On the Boys spinoff, the actor portrays the decidedly different role of Rufus, a psychic supe at Godolkin University whom Marie this week went to for help with finding her MIA roommate. In the midst of Rufus using his powers to locate Emma, the scene abruptly cut to him and Marie in his dorm. Marie woke up to find Rufus had stripped down to nothing, but before anything could happen, Marie used her powers to blow up his penis just as Jordan busted into the room. An awed Jordan later memorably described the event as a “c–ksplosion.”

Below, executive producer Eric Kripke (who, of course, created Supernatural) and co-showrunner Michele Fazekas break down the explosive moment and the subversive glee of casting Calvert as a “MAGA a–hole.” Plus, Kripke talks about giving Golden Boy’s younger brother (played by Asa Germann) a name that is very familiar to Supernatural viewers.

TVLINE | Eric, I have to know what came first: “I’m going to cast a Supernatural alum and blow up their penis,” or, “I’m going to blow up a character’s penis and this character happens to be played by a Supernatural alum”?
ERIC KRIPKE |
I give all the credit to [co-showrunners] Michele [Fazekas] and Tara [Butters] because I love Alex and he’s great, but he also came after my time.
MICHELE FAZEKAS | He auditioned. The script was first.
KRIPKE | Yeah, he auditioned, and Michele and Tara put him in front of the rest of the executive producers, like, “We love this guy.”
FAZEKAS | Not because he was from Supernatural, but because he was great. And then he was so great that we’re like, “Oh, this is a character that I want to keep seeing.”
KRIPKE | Yeah, exactly. And so, just when I saw his name come up, I was like, “Oh, my god, that’d be amazing! Let’s cast Alex!” But yeah, he won it just by being awesome in the audition.

TVLINE | What did he think of the “c–ksplosion” scene?
FAZEKAS |
We’re not cavalier about anything that is at all intimate. We never would tell someone, “You have to show any part of your body.” It’s always like, “Here’s what we want to do. Tell us what you’re open to, and we will do that.” So he was game. But I think the days of like convincing someone, “Show us your boobs or whatever,” it doesn’t happen. It doesn’t happen on our shows, and it doesn’t happen on Eric’s shows. It’s just like, “What are you comfortable with?” and we’ll do that.
KRIPKE | What’s funny is, there’s a bit of this in The Boys as well and a couple of times in Gen V, the plan is we don’t want you to expose yourself. You’re basically wearing a speedo with a prosthetic rubber penis at the front. And then we usually give the guys — it’s happened once on The Boys and I think it happened on Gen V — the freedom to design their own penis. [Laughs] And I think that helps. They have ownership over their prosthetic penis and it just kind of becomes this funny thing that they’re wearing rather than this, like, intimate experience. I think it creates a disconnect that’s helpful and hilarious to watch. It’s no secret that I think penises are hilarious.

TVLINE | Once Alex came into the room and won that role, was there a bit of glee on your part, Eric, that you were going to really subvert what Supernatural fans might be expecting from him?
KRIPKE |
It did across cross my mind that he’s such a lovable character in Supernatural and then just watching him play this complete MAGA a–hole who gets his c–k exploded, it was always going to be a fun subversion for the Supernatural fans.

TVLINE | Eric, did you have any reservations about naming another TV character with supernatural abilities Sam?
KRIPKE |
That character’s name was there from the very, very beginning, and I did not choose that character’s name. [Executive producer] Craig Rosenberg and his writers’ room picked that character’s name, and [it] shows how dense I am that [I didn’t realize the connection] until I was reading the Twitter feeds over the weekend that said, “Boy, Kripke, naming another little brother Sam,” and I was like, “Oh, s–t, you’re right. I guess I am.” So clearly, subconsciously, I have something to do with little brothers named Sam, but it was not a conscious choice.
