Warning: The following contains spoilers for Gen V Episode 4. Proceed at your own risk!

Andre and Cate are no longer the only Gen V supes hitting the sheets.

In this week’s episode, frenemies Marie and Jordan shared an unexpected moment of connection after Marie confessed to her classmates that Jordan was the real hero during the fight with Golden Boy. Jordan confronted Marie in her dorm and admitted to being scared while going up against Golden Boy. Then Jordan leaned in, shifting into their male form before kissing Marie, who, although surprised, very much returned the lip-lock.

More pressing matters soon took over, like stopping a very powerful Sam, and it was in the middle of that battle that Marie blacked out for the second time during the episode. But this time, she woke up naked in bed, next to an equally nude Jordan in their female form.

Below, co-showrunner Michele Fazekas and executive producer Eric Kripke break down the unexpected pairing and how Jordan’s gender-shifting says more about them than Marie.

Gen V Episode 4

TVLINE | The choice to have Jordan take on their male form before kissing Marie feels very deliberate. What went into that decision for you as writers and for Jordan as a character?
MICHELE FAZEKAS |
It was deliberate, you’re right. And it sort of says more about Jordan than it does about Marie, and we will get into that through the rest of the season. Someone will point that out to Jordan, like, “You decide to change into a guy.” When I came onto the show and read the pilot, I was like, “Oh, Jordan’s your secret weapon here.” This is a character that I’ve never seen on any TV show, film, anything, and I really loved all that you can do. It’s not just sort of a trans allegory, because Jordan is not really trans in that they can actually switch between genders, but it’s close enough that you can get into some of those issues. And it’s really about Jordan figuring out who they are and Marie figuring out who she is, and what does it mean to be involved with someone who is bi-gender? So yeah, it was a choice, and we don’t leave it unanswered.

TVLINE | Obviously, it creates a bit of mystery for the next episode when Marie wakes up next to female Jordan. But how does it also impact Marie in terms of her sexuality and her relationship with Jordan moving forward?
FAZEKAS |
It sparks a conversation and sort of a self-examination for Marie. Eric and I both have Gen Z kids, younger than these people, but they’re still Gen Z. What I’ve noticed about them all is, at the end of the day, they don’t really give a f–k about that. They don’t get upset about it. What I love about writing about this age group is it’s such a different experience for that age group, where it’s like, “Oh, OK, I’m bisexual or transgender,” and they sort of incorporate that and move on. Like, that’s been my experience with my kids, with their friends. Like, they don’t care.

Gen V Episode 4 Marie/Jordan

TVLINE | At first glance, Marie and Jordan would not seem like an obvious pairing. So what is it that draws them to each other?
FAZEKAS |
I think they both have a really strong sense of right and wrong, and it’s why they sort of clash in the beginning. But it’s also why they are attracted to each other. And they have a similar sort of really strong sense of themselves. That came out of the room sort of naturally, like, “Who would be interesting to see together?” and the more we talked about it, the more we were like, “I want to see that. I want to explore that for those characters.”

TVLINE | I have to say, Marie does not seem all that concerned that she keeps blacking out, first with Rufus, then at the end of this episode. What can you say about what’s going on there?
FAZEKAS |
She is super concerned, and as they sort of unpack and realize we’re missing time here, then it becomes like an alarm bell. So she will have a real reaction, like, “What the f–k is going on?”
ERIC KRIPKE | [Laughs] And I would say it is a very iconic college experience to black out.
FAZEKAS | “I guess I just drank a little too much.”

TVLINE | But mid-conversation?
KRIPKE |
Um, yes. I would like to refer you to my 21st birthday. [Both laugh]
