To say that Buck and Tommy’s first date was a disaster would be an understatement. It was a train wreck from start to finish, ultimately going down in flames — and not the kind that a firefighter is used to putting out.
Tommy could sense Buck’s nerves from the jump, assuring him that no one was looking at them. “You’re a little tense, but I get it,” he said, adding that Buck might be surprised how accepting people in their line of work can be.
“This is my first date with a dude, but I’m not weirded out,” Buck insisted. “I’m an ally. Every Pride Month, I put a rainbow sticker on my Instagram.” It was a cringe statement, but Tommy chose to see the good in it, telling Buck, “I guess it’s just me that makes you nervous.”
For a minute, it seemed like the date might not be a total loss… until Eddie and Marisol walked in. Unprompted, Buck lied right to Eddie’s face, telling him that he and Tommy were “going to go find some hot chicks, because chicks love firefighters.” (At this point, we were basically crawling out of our skin with secondhand embarrassment.)
Tommy then showed his sassy side when Marisol mentioned moving her armoire over to Eddie’s place. “I guess you can never have too much closet space,” Eddie said, to which Tommy pointedly replied, “Ain’t that the truth. Right, Evan?” (Side note: Tommy being the only character who calls Buck “Evan” is actually pretty adorable.)
That’s where the night ended, unfortunately. Instead of Ubering to a movie with Buck, Tommy called his own car to head home. “Evan, I think you’re adorable,” he said. “But I don’t think you’re ready. I’ll see you around.”
touching friendship between Buck and Eddie
And I hope it stays this way . Emphasis on friendship.
100% I like Bucks arc and it feels real no matter what some say. But to make them both bi just doesn’t feel right to me. I wanna see Eddie help Buck as a friend for now. And I kinda like him and Tommy.
I partly agree. Buck’s arc does feel real and I would also like Eddie to be there for Buck as just a friend (for now). But I’d be perfectly happy if Eddie realised that he was gay or bi or pan or whatever in a future season – just not THIS season. I think the fans are keen to rush this storyline because they’ve been so invested in #Buddie for so many years. But I think it does a disservice to the characters and to the fans to have two characters who previously identified as straight both come out in the space of six episodes, just because we have a shortened season due to the writer’s strike. If they do go down a similar route with Eddie exploring his sexuality, I’d like a slow-burn that we can truly invest in. Perhaps something like: Buck realises he might have feelings for Eddie towards the end of season 7, pines after him for some of next season, confesses his feelings to Eddie midway through season 8, Eddie doesn’t feel the same way, Buck moves on, gets into a serious relationship “with a dood” (lol), Eddie gets jealous, there’s a major fire emergency at some point in season 9 where Buck/Eddie get trapped, they both think they’re going to die, they share an unexpected and very emotional goodbye kiss right before Hen/Chimney manage to save them, Eddie questions his own feelings for Buck afterwards but Buck gets engaged to his boyfriend, Hen encourages Eddie to confess his feelings to Buck which he doesn’t do until the day of the wedding when Buck is at the altar (maybe end of season 9 or somewhere in season 10). Like… this entire potential Buddie storyline could be so great and it could span the multiple seasons… but I feel like a lot of the fans just want to skip to the good part. Sometimes too much of a good thing, too soon, is not satisfying and a storyline needs the space to breathe and grow.
A back to back coming out arc? No. That is just the laziest storytelling ever and blatant fanservice, especially so late in the game. Ya’ll need to chill and just enjoy queer Buck and be NICE to Lou and to Marisol’s actress. I haven’t forgotten the racist hate that was thrown at Gabrielle Walsh for even breathing in Ryan’s direction.
You don’t know what you’re talking about and therefore shouldn’t talk, because you make things worse for the people you think you’re defending. I wasn’t going to say anything, but I’m sick of seeing fans being accused of attacking for no reason .
.
Gabrielle Walsh said she felt like an “honorary Latina” so it was okay for her to pursue Latina roles even though she was not a Latina descent. That is why fans were upset, it was in no way shape or form racism??.
.
The Marisol actress posted a transphobic “joke” and has interacted with homophobic comments on her IG (about how sad it is to force straight characters gay … probably left by one of the trolls here). No one is attacking Lou, because he has been nice and respectful and not bigoted!
It would not be lazy at all, it would actually be incredibly complex and thoughtful and very much in line with the true spirit of the show. This was always pushing boundaries and featuring flawed but real characters finding themselves. Some of the Hen, Bobby and Michael storylines are just a few examples. Buck and Eddie would be great.
YES. SLOW BURN for buddie, please!
I can’t believe how ridiculous Eddie’s story was…and not in a good way…I honestly don’t even know what to say right now 😅 He was giving “pod person.” Is he having an early midlife crisis??
Marisol is without a doubt one of the absolute worst characters any series has ever foisted upon its viewing audience! The actress is equally horrible and unlikeable… so here’s hoping TPTB get a clue and sooner rather than later. It’s really easy to dislike Eddie when he acts this dumb in each and every romantic relationship.
The guy married the first person he ever dated. And almost proposed to the second person he ever dated out of habit. Marisol is the third person he has ever dated in his whole life. What would be surprising is for Eddie not to look dumb. Even Athena’s children have dated more than Eddie,
Eddie might be a great friend but he’s a bad romantic partner. Shannon was right when she pointed out that he does what he feels is right for Eddie and for everyone else without even asking first.
I can’t decide which I want more. The friendship between Buck and Eddie is so beautiful and strong, they created a family and it’s amazingly showing how happiness and family aren’t exclusive to romance love. And then there’s the romance side, can’t deny the chemistry.
I want them to get together and will always want it, but there are a lot of considerations to make it happen and we will just need to wait and see. I agree that their friendship and the family they have made with Christopher is the best thing about them but I do think it would remain even if it became romantic. Just speaking for myself, these kind of slower burn same-sex friends-to-lovers couples are basically unheard of on TV and the representation would mean a lot to me.
Eddie did not have the kind of reaction a Bridgerton would when someone makes a move on his love interest, that’s all I’m saying. He was as supportive as a friend, not as a love interest
Because they are friends?? And that won’t change ever?? And this isn’t Bridgerton. Eddie showing any negative or conflicted emotions would take away from the important point of the scene, that there is unconditional love and acceptance between them. Not to mention the episode made clear Eddie has some big guilt/repression issues going on…IF they touch on his feelings it wouldn’t be in the same episode that he finds out.
More than anything, what the past week has made me realise is how much anti-gay/bi/etc bigotry there still is in society. The fact that so many snowflakes are triggered by a character on a TV show exploring their sexuality is pathetic. These people should ask themselves why they have such a problem with this storyline. It’s certainly not because it seems random or because they didn’t see it coming. I’d wager that even if the clues throughout the seasons had been blaringly obvious, the losers who have an issue would still be upset – because they’re homophobic. Simple as that. If y’all have such an issue with this storyline, then stop watching the show. And as Oliver Stark said: “You are not required to announce your departure!”
I posted something very similar last week; the low key homophobia with alot of posters here is crazy to me. Again, CHANGE THE CHANNEL if you have that big a problem with it.
I still love this show, however I hope ABC doesn’t make it too soapy like they did Greys. The mix of focus on the characters and the crazy catastrophes and how they helped them learn and grow was what I personally loved about it. I think all the arcs are great but weave in a bit more of the other stuff as well, while we watch Buck grow, Eddie figure out his life, Hen and Karen navigate motherhood, Bobby and Athena grow as a married couple, etc.
Why is 911 taking away the rescues as that the point of the show
I know! I need more rescues!
#1 The major focus of 911 has always been the main characters and their personal lives. This isn’t Law & Order SVU where the major focus is on the case-of-the-week. #2 This episode still had 2x rescues iirc as well as 2x very meaty A-plots (HenRen adoption + BiBuck) and 1x terrible B-plot masquerading as an A-plot (Marisol & Eddie). Also, the first 3 episodes of the season had multiple rescues on the cruise. Saying 911 is taking away the rescues is a bit of a reach.
Last week they had one rescue so they are taking away the rescues. There being two this week good but they are taking away the rescues and doing more focus on the characters personal lives
Please be so for real. There were literally about 15 individual rescues across the first 3 episodes and not as much focus on their personal lives. So yeah, the episode following that is going to touch base with the characters we’ve grown to love over 6 seasons – especially now that it’s on a new network. How are new viewers going to fall in love with the characters if they don’t have any episodes focusing on their personal lives. We had 3 consecutive episodes of disaster/rescue spectacle. The following 2 episodes, before the mid-season break, SHOULD be more focused on their personal lives.
I’m convinced a lot of viewers only watch the emergencies and just zone out for the personal storylines based on some of the comments I’ve been seeing lately. It has never been a standard procedural. Sexuality discovery stories for characters are not ‘out of left field’ or forced. That said, it probably doesn’t help that the show in many ways felt different in its last two years on Fox. But I feel like it’s getting back to basics and the Ryan Murphy/Tim Minear feel from the earlier seasons is back, which I love
There could be something to this. I didn’t watch 9-1-1 until it started airing in syndication. I saw Season 1 and the start of Season 2 (Eddie’s arrival) before losing track of when it was on in my area, then I caught some Season 3 episodes including the tsunami. I’d seen some allusions to Buck/Eddie before ever watching the show and wondered if it was all in the fans’ heads (as was often the tone of the online arguments). But once I saw their early interactions, I easily saw what the fans were picking up on and understood the shipping, though I figured the chances were slim to none that it would happen. I started watching this season out of curiosity about the switch in networks and the cruise ship disaster. Then Tommy kissed Buck and I was hooked, not so much out of interest in Tommy or their relationship specifically, but due to the way the scene unfolded for Buck and the way Oliver Stark played the wonder and relief of that moment. The tone of those developments and the balance of personal scenes and rescues has felt consistent to me with the episodes and stories I’d seen prior – which were from early in the show’s run.
I somewhat agree. I realized that last week…that they are short on rescues. But then ahain…the first 3 episodes were one giant rescue. But with 911…the rescues were always second to the character storylines. And I think the severely shortened season has them trying to a lot in a little amount of time. I think next season will feel a lot better
it’s for budgetary (and plot) reasons – when shows like this have certain time of episodes they will at some point have slower/ character development episode or character-centric episode to make up for the presumably larger budget spent on the “big” episodes
everything in first 3 episodes on the boat were major location & set piece high budget episodes. due to the fewer episodes this season the writers presumably figured out the story goals for the shortened season and this was the chosen path creatively to achieve the end goal – ie. Buck coming out, Hen’s family development, etc
they’re not cutting out or lessening the action (ie. big scale rescues etc) – they’re just spreading out the budget for the whole season and to have something like the boat episodes this is how they have to do it.
I’m sorry but if they continue the Buck storyline I’m done with 911, that crap is shoved in our faces on everything these days and I’m so over it.🙄
“If one other character finding a new facet to his sexuality and realising his bisexuality is your deal breaker – I fear you’ve missed the entire point of the show. You are not required to announce your departure.” – Oliver Stark. 👋👋👋
Bi 👋
Good. Fork off. Let us enjoy the show in peace.
Bye
Well.. not so ray of Sunshine.. one could argue that heterosexual relationships have been ‘shoved in our faces’ since the beginning of the invention of movies and television!
You are the weakest link.. goodbye!
Here here. Tired of hypocrisy of that phrase. Was raised with straight relationships being shoved in my face, nice to have the other way.
I’m really hoping we see more Angela Bassett & Peter Krause in the next episodes! I know the first 3 had lots of focus on Bathena, but I am hoping we see more soon and don’t act like the cruise is a thing of the past. That was a big thing for them…
I’m excited to see how Bobby’s past is explored further with the addition of Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s character.
Where is Chimney?! What kind of best man allowed that to happen? Who’s responsible here???
By the looks of it, you should watch The Hangover to research your answer.
Give me a break, any woman that gets near Eddie, ya’ll hate. I haven’t forgotten the racist garbage that was thrown at Gabrielle Walsh.
The woman who lies about her ethnicity to get roles. What was the one thing that Eddie and Ana were known for? Oh yes, their heritage, and the actress couldn’t speak Spanish to save her life! And now, you want to feel bad for a transphobic homophobe? Give me a break!!
Thank you. It’s pretty easy to learn the truth about what happened. What we’re not going to do is rewrite history and pretend it’s about unhinged stans rather than serious issues like racial/ethnic misrepresentation and transphobia and homophobia (and don’t get me wrong, there are definitely unhinged stans who I condemn, but it’s not the case here).
Where did she lie about her ethnicity to get roles? She made a joke about how she felt like an honary Latina for growing up in a Mexican community. How is that a reason to hate her? Also, I never saw anything in reference to that. I’m talking about general racist behavior that was spewed on her socials when she was trying to promote the show.
I never mentioned Marisol’s actress? How did we get there?
Also I didn’t mention Marisol’s
It honestly feels like Eddie’s character has been a victim of some last minute decisions, because honestly, WHAT has that been in the last two episodes? I don’t know who this person is, but that’s not Eddie. First he keeps pawing Chris off on Marisol and Buck so he can hang with Tommy, then he (seemingly impulsively) asks Marisol to move in while Chris is away? EDDIE? The man whose every decision in life is made with his son as the first priority? Please, he’s my favorite character on the show and it’s getting hard to watch ngl. It’s also incredibly hard to watch the Eddie/Marisol scenes, they’re a black hole of chemistry, their storyline is all over the place, and Marisol is barely more than a sexy lamp. I sure hope the purpose of this whole thing is just to set up Eddie’s religious repression issues and we’ll be free of Eddie/Marisol soon.
I did chuckle at the fact that Buck was more torn up about lying to Eddie than about Tommy kinda-dumping him. Also Maddie saying “I just think you’re not sure of your own feelings yet. And if there’s something you need to tell Eddie, you will in your own time.” girl KNOWS.
My main concern with this episode, though, was the Mara storyline. It wasn’t heartwarming, it was absolutely terribly written and ngl made Hen and Karen look like awful foster parents. It was obvious from the moment Mara walked through their door that she was heavily traumatized, and then they acted surprised and immediately wanted to SEND HER BACK when she showed signs of that trauma? And Hen changed her mind because she saw the same situation in… a DOG?????? Also why did the social worker not tell them anything about Mara’s past and potential behavioral issues beforehand? As someone who works with children, it was absolutely excruciating to watch, and it really soured the entire episode for me.
Lou revealed in his interview that the storyline was supposed to be Eddie and Tommy, which is probably why Eddie’s storyline seems thrown together last minute. I think it could also explain why last week felt like whiplash because sometimes it felt like Tommy liked Eddie more than Buck and Eddie seemed to love hanging out with Tommy. It almost feels like the storyline changed course after they already filmed some scenes.
It could’ve worked out with Eddie and Tommy too. Then again, Eddie has really dated only 2 times in his life (and he jumped to marry the first girlfriend he ever had). But Buck and Tommy have an added cute factor because of Maddie’s upcoming wedding, Buck’s parents reaction and the backstory of Buck and Tommy in the 118 with both Chim and Hen. I’m not saying they are going to get married, they just started dating, but it seems to me Buck and Tommy have Kindle of potential Maddie and Chimney had for a great story.
This is the first I’ve heard of this. After the talks Eddie had with people in the last episode it would make sense though. I’m glad they went with Buck instead though cause it’s been amazing to watch so far.
3way hookup on the wedding day
yeah there must be something… coz of there outfits swapped and the whole hangover scene could turn the tables… Excited for the next episode on 2nd May
There were already many fanfics with this theme posted on Ao3 within mere hours of the conclusion of last night’s episode. Buck/Eddie/Tommy stans are prolific and FAST! 🌈🥰🌈🥰🌈
TK called it. I’m sad there is less chance of a crossover now. Buck and TK could have had a good talk.
I’m glad there is an episode or two before the wedding. It did seemed rushed for Buck to invite Tommy. At least there is a time where he has a chance to tell the other people in his life about his choice before showing up with Tommy. His parents the other Fire Fighters. Hope we get a little more of that before the wedding.
Did their date take place in a 1980s Pizza Hut?
No, it took place at Miceli’s in Hollywood…the sign Buck was standing under said “Hollywood’s Oldest Italian Restaurant.” It’s been there since 1949.
I’m so glad I found this show – as cheesy and campy as it can sometimes be, it’s also heartwarming and fun. Love it!
I haven’t seen last night’s episode. But as for last week’s. That last scene with Buck kissing that dude was the most unrealistic, awkward display of acting I have ever seen. I’ve always loved the Buck character. My favorite on the show. But introducing this “bi” thing seems totally unnecessary. Par for the course for an ABC show though. Always trying to push some agenda.
Love Love the show. Such a family. Eddie’s response to Buck coming out was wonderful. And you knew the 1st date had to go bad but that was good., They made up at the end. Buck is so hottt!!
Love your style of writing!
Yeaah I’m kinda happy their date was a disaster and sad they didn’t give the slightest hint (not a glance, not a word, not a gesture) on possible jealousy from Eddie’s side? T_T
I’m also nervous about Chimney. I hope something funny happened to him, and not something terrible
I was glad that Buck felt comfortable enough to let others know that he’s
bisexual.
The support and love that
Buck has is awesome!
As for Eddie , it would have been better if he and Marisol ended their relationship.
There is no chemistry between Eddie and Marisol.
I’m still a bitter Betty that we could have gotten this back in season FOUR when they introduced Albert, Chimney’s half brother, and had him move in with Buck. I really thought this was where it was going, and then the actor ended up leaving the show and the writing went downhill and I lost interest. Still, it would have been absolutely adorable and hilarious to have two Buckleys fall for two Hans.
