9-1-1 Ends on Explosive Cliffhanger — Is [Spoiler] Really Leaving the 118?

It was also a tough week for the Wilson family. Olivia Ortiz, the councilwoman whose son died of a traumatic brain injury under Hen’s watch earlier this season, exacted her revenge by blocking Mara’s adoption. Not only did she cancel Hen and Karen’s custody hearing, which was supposed to just be a formality, but she appeared to get a sick pleasure out of having Mara forcibly removed from the Wilsons’ home by child services. The sight of Mara being ripped away from the safety of her moms-to-be was unbearable. And when Hen attempted to stop the prickly politician from destroying her family, Olivia gleefully recounted the questionable incidents from Hen’s records that could be used for much worse.

And Eddie’s emotional affair storyline took quite a few turns this week, the first being Kim’s surprise visit to the firehouse. Her uncomfortable interaction with Buck raised multiple red flags, and we immediately began to worry that this was going to turn into an Obsessed-type situation. (Or to put it in terms more appropriate to Ryan Guzman, a Boy Next Door-type situation.)

The next twist came when Eddie came clean to Kim about her resemblance to Shannon, which even she found to be uncanny. Given how bizarre this whole storyline has been, we weren’t expecting Eddie to suddenly start using his head. That’s true growth right there.

Twist the third? That would be Kim showing up at Eddie’s house in a Shannon wig, which seemed to validate our concerns about her being totally unhinged. But much to our surprise, Kim used her new ‘do to roleplay with Eddie, helping him express his unresolved feelings about Shannon’s death. It was beautiful and painful and cathartic, so it only made sense for Eddie to break down in Shannon’s — sorry, Kim’s — arms.

Then came the fourth twist: Marisol and Christopher returned home to find Eddie and Kim holding one another, prompting his son to ask the heartbreaking question, “Mom?”

(Confession: We’d be OK if Marisol can’t forgive Eddie for this. Maybe it’s because he has more chemistry with Kim, a woman he’s only known for a few days. Or maybe it’s because we’ll always secretly yearn for #Buddie. Either way, the Eddie/Marisol relationship really feels like it has run its course, as many 9-1-1 relationships tend to do at the end of a season.)

As for Maddie and Chimney, we’re happy to report that — despite terrible things happening to nearly everyone else around them — the newlyweds emerged from the episode completely unscathed. Nothing of consequence, good or bad, befell them. And for that, we can all be thankful.

We even got to spend some quality time with Buck and Tommy this week, as the power couple received medals alongside the rest of the 118 for their efforts in the cruise ship crisis.

And that speech from Bobby to Buck about how far he’s come, complete with his wholehearted approval of Buck’s relationship with Tommy? Come on now, we can only take so much over here!

ABC has been killing it (sorry!) with 9-1-1 promos all season, and the 15-second teaser it just dropped for next week’s finale is no exception.
