21 Jump Street
This 2012 buddy cop comedy starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill pretty much defined the concept of “loose adaptation”: It took Fox’s ultra-serious Johnny Depp vehicle about cops going undercover in high school and transformed it into a riotous romp, with Tatum and Hill’s cops trying to fit in as high school students and stirring up old feelings of teenage angst. The goofy approach worked, though: Tatum and Hill proved to be a dynamic comedic duo, and the movie grossed over $200 million worldwide, with a sequel — 22 Jump Street — following two years later.
What about Serenity from short lived Firefly?
I also wanted to add The Equalizer (The only film franchise that Denzel Washington has done with 2 sequels)
I’d add George of the Jungle to this list. It had the wackiness of the original series, as well as a lot of heart.
I agree that both “Brady Bunch” movies are hilarious. It’s surprising how many movies based on old sitcoms or action shows get their laughs by making fun of the original.
Lizzie McGuire is on here, but no Serenity????? Shame TV LINE
Yes – Fall Guy deserves to be on list. The A-Team and Man From Uncle botch deserve love.
Batman?!
The movies were based on the comics, not the old tv show
The 1966 Batman movie was drawn from the ABC series, same cast and all four of the primary villains.
There’s also “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” (1993), based on “Batman: The Animated Series” (1992-1995).
True, but the more modern and highly acclaimed films like the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight trilogy were clearly derived from the comic books.
The same can be said for the highly successful Superman movie series, beginning with the 1978 Christoper Reeves hit. Although there was indeed a Superman TV series that ran in the 50s for six seasons, the movies are based much more on the original comic book series than the TV show.
Addams Family Values would’ve been good if it wasn’t for the summer camp scenes. That made the movie way too cheesy.
Dragnet – Tom Hanks, Dan Aykroyd, Colonel Potter…
I truly enjoyed “The Brady Bunch Movie”. It was silly, of course, but it was funny. “A Very Brady Sequel”, however, is on my short list of movies that were so terrible that I want that time back that I spent watching it. OI wish I could unsee it. This movie should not be on this list.
Surprised Sex and the City didn’t make the list, as the first SATC film was a big commerical success and grossed over $400 million and the second also grossed more than $200 million. There are several movies on the list (e.g., South Park) that didn’t come close to those numbers.
Three other shows which have thier roots back as far as radio. One has already been mentioned. Dragnet started in radio. Then went to tv twice once in 1951 and then came back again in 1967. Both starred Jack Webb. The movie spoof came out in 1987 with Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks.
Another show that started on radio was Our Miss Brooks. It started on TV in 1952. And started Eve Arden and Gale Gordon. After the series ended, a movie came out in 1956. Same cast and basically recapped the entire series but a better ending.
The last show was The Lone Ranger. It went to TV in 1949 with Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels. They also tried to make a couple attempts of redoing with series with The Legend of The Lone Ranger (1981) and The Lone Ranger (2013) with Johnny Depp. Enough said about those 2 movies.
My biggest hope for the Fall Guy movie is more of the TV show on DVD.
The Fall Guy turns a surrogate father/daughter relationship into a romantic one. Thats just icky.
I feel like this should be two separate lists, your remake/’based off’ type movies (Mission Impossible, Charlie’s Angels, Scooby Doo, etc) and your ‘part of the series/retains the same actors and characters and everything’ type ones (XFiles, South Park, Downton, etc).
Speaking of XFiles – “dynamics between David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson’s characters — yeah, we’re talking about that hallway scene — that pollinated storylines” hehe I see what you did there and also I will never stop saying ‘that d$%& bee’
