61ST STREET (AMC)
Season 2 Ordered: Oct. 1, 2019
Season 2 Cancelled: Jan. 5, 2023
Reasons Given: No official statement was given by AMC at the time, but according to Variety, the decision to scrap Season 2 was made as part of a cost-cutting measure for the network. Not only was 61st Street handed a two-season order when it was first greenlit in 2019, but Season 2 had already been filmed in its entirety when AMC pulled the plug.
MAY 12, 2023 UPDATE: 61st Street has officially been rescued by The CW! Season 2 will air on the network in 2024.
Stumptown still stings
I agree Stumptown still stings. That show was great!!! I liked the dynamics between the characters. Really great show. Gone too soon. :(
It stings a bit, but given that there was a “reboot” coming I wonder if it would have been any good in S2. Really liked the show as it was and would have liked to see more of Cynthia Addai-Robinson’s character with Dex.
This. I liked S1, and I remember reading about the reboot idea and HATING it. I feel like ABC saw the outline for the reboot and called time on it.
If that was the case, then they should have been honest about it, instead of the BS we got.
There have been massive numbers of shows that didn’t start their next season until after New Years, and some went into the summer tv season.
But instead of tell us the truth, all ABC could do was lie to us.
Stumptown still hurts!
I still haven’t forgiven ABC for canceling stomptown
I am still angry over “Stumptown” ..
Farscape
That cancellation was devastating. Thankfully we got a year later The Peacekeeper War to get a proper finale. It wasn’t perfect but we got it and a satisfying ending. Though as we learned, the cancellation wasn’t simply due to declining rating.
From Rockne S. O’Bannon:
O’Bannon: Nothing could be done, because it was not a creative decision. It was entirely a business decision. The Henson Company had been sold to some German investors, and the German investors were having all sorts of legal issues and problems. A lot of stuff was going on with that company. As I understand it, the Sci Fi Channel kind of just as a negotiating ploy, to see if there was some wiggle room on the licensing fee for Season 5, had said in that case we’ll just cancel it, and the German company leapt on that because they didn’t want to have to deficit another season of a show that wasn’t an inexpensive show.
Suddenly Sci Fi Channel’s going, “Wait a second, let’s not be too hasty here,” and the Germans went, “Nah, we’re done.” Sci Fi, from what I understand, certainly wanted it back for a fifth season and would never have posed this if they knew the repercussions of it, but there was no chance to come back, because our new parent company wasn’t interested in footing the bill, and maybe they didn’t have the money, I don’t know.
brian henson has been talking about reviving the show recently
THIS!
.
Thank you for posting this. So many people blame the ratings for FARSCAPE getting canceled after getting the two season renewal then reversal but that wasn’t the actual reality. ScyFy/SciFi wanted to play games with a foreign company that was shady AF because they wanted to cut costs everywhere they could and it backfired.
.
I am grateful that the fan campaign to save the show caught the attention of a few group of European investors to help Hallmark Entertainment pay for the PKW miniseries to give some sort of closure to the show.
I still haven’t forgiven ABC for cancelling stumptown
You can say that again….
This one hurts and it especially stings because it was diverse in ways not typically seen on broadcast – bi lead character, supporting character with Down Syndrome, and also indigenous actors that way too often are overlooked (at least ABC has continued to cast some in the likes of Alaska Daily, and a few shows like Reservation Dogs are helping, but genuinely still underrepresented).
The shows I miss are, in order of preference, 61st Street, Luck, Stumptown, and Vinyl. Hopefully the already completed second season of 61st Street will be picked up by someone.
Season 2 has already been picked up, by The CW. They’ll air it later in the year.
Should “Frank’s Place” be on this list? (It was three days away from shooting its second season when it was canceled.)
Thank you for mentioning “Frank’s Place”.
One of the greatest, most under-rated and forgotten TV shows ever. I still say “The Bridge” is possibly the best half-hour TV episode I can remember from any series.
There are a few series that I´ve loved are on this list:
Stumptown, Vinyl, Glow, Perpetual Grace, Why Women Kill and Moonhaven.
Most upset:
Stumptown, I’m Sorry, People of Earth
Very most least upset:
Luck
Most least?
People of Earth was such a great and original concept. It sucks that there wasnt a way to save it. I wish the creator had been able to continue/create a graphic novel or even a regular novel to at least finish up the story.
Lois and Clark was actually picked up for season 4 and 5 after season 3. ABC had to agree to pick up the show PREY starting a pre Will and Grace Debra Messing from Warner Brothers to avoid airing a season 5.
I miss ‘Eureka’ and ‘Farscape’. Going to miss ‘Inside Job’.
“Eureka” was such a fun show! I miss it, too.
After Eureka was cancelled, I stopped watching all original SyFy programming until after it had ended, as at most, they only gave shows a 5 season run. I came to this conclusion due to the fact that other SyFy shows I watched also only had 5 seasons on the network, despite good ratings, strong fanbases, & an interesting & fun premise.
Why invest in a series when you know it’s end date is no more than 5 seasons, if that?
That was the business model for syfy. The first 4 seasons were subsidized by the production company. After that SYFY had to pick up a majority of the costs. And only the shows with good rating got a season 5. The only way a sixth season would have happened is if the rating went back up. (PS they never did!) It sucked, but that was their business model.
In this era of cancelling shows left and right, five seasons sounds like a fairly decent run, unfortunately.
Super disappointed when Netflix cancelled The Society, I thought it was a really good mystery show and the cliffhanger ending where Allie’s mom, Amanda in front of the memorial with all the kids name on it …. grr, i really wanted to see what season 2 had in store for us
Same here. So wish they could bring it back but I doubt it will ever happen. Everyone probably has moved on too (meaning the actors/writers)
Stumptown still stings.
GLOW and Stumptown still hurt. GLOW is especially painful because it was Netflix, which doesn’t rely on a broadcast schedule and delays releasing new seasons of shows all the time!
I miss GLOW but the worst renewal reversal for me is Hindsight. Still annoyed VH1 canceled it and that it isn’t available to stream anywhere.
I would say all were deserving cancellations.
I LOVED Stumptown. The characters/actors and attitude were great. I was shocked that nobody else picked them up!
Why Women Kill deserved to be renewed. Paramount+ lost a brilliant show
Stumptown was good. I would have liked to see more of it. Why Women Kill was interesting. I don’t know what they would have done with Season 3 but would have liked to have seen it.
Not too upset about any of these, but I was looking forward to another season of “I Am Not Okay With This” which was also cancelled by Netflix due to Covid.
I really enjoyed Stumptown and seeing Cobie Smulders in a more serious, dramatic role. It suit her well and seemed like the perfect character for her.
It showed a lot of promise. I wish they would’ve at least just delayed it’s return and held off a year but maybe she needed to move on ?
Since she did end up getting cast on Amazon FreeVee’s original High-School, another dramatic role. She just doesn’t star in it and her presence is drastically reduced, so… I’m still hoping to see her get another lead role similar to her ABC show.
Stumptown! My favorite (on this list) and greatest loss. I really liked the characters and the storyline and feel it should have been given a Season 2…no real reason for it to have been cancelled, imho.
Still mad about Hindsight
Glad someone else is still not happy about that. PS, they cancelled the show while the actors were actually flying to Atlanta to film S2. By the time they landed, they were unemployed. TRUE STORY!!
Me too!

Inside Job has 3 seasons, the third was just on a little while ago. Stumptown will hopefully be back, but I’m not holding my breath. With the pandemic quite a few shows were shortened or cancelled, some unfairly, other did come back but didn’t last. Some of the above shows should be revisited by the networks and hopefully they can find a way to bring them back before we forget them. Out of all of them I personally wish Stumptown was still on. It was a good show and ended on a weird cliffhanger that left me wanting more.
Inside Job was split into 2 parts by Netflix, there was no third part, but it’s still only one season.
Stumptown! I loved it and have been hoping some other smarter network’s executive in programming would realize it needs to be continued!
I am with you 100%!
