Nina Arianda, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
WHY SHE DESERVES A NOD: It takes a formidable actress to play the onetime love of irascible Susie Myerson’s (Alex Borstein) life, and Tony winner Arianda more than fit the bill. In her three episodes as Hedy Ford, the Billions and Goliath vet was cool, cutting, sexy and a smidge terrifying — in other words, the perfect romantic foil for Borstein. But Arianda’s most satisfying moment came in the series’ penultimate episode when Hedy sauntered into her “hubby” Gordon Ford’s office and, without breaking a sweat, emasculated the sexist pig to within an inch of his life.
I’m hoping Keke Palmer on SNL gets a nomination.
Quinta Brunson for hosting SNL should definitely get a nom. Her performance in the car sketch opposite Mikey Day was fantastic.
Give it to Patty Guggenheim. I could watch her scenes on YouTube for the tenth time and they’d still make me laugh.
As talented as many of these actresses are, their roles didn’t necessarily make me laugh – and this isn’t for drama, it’s comedy. She did induce laughs, hands down.
Poker Face had so many good ones, including Chloë Sevigny, Cherry Jones, Stephanie Hsu, and yes, Ellen Barkin…. really, S. Empatha and Judith are right at the top for me and I’d probably say their episode was one of my favorite episodes. I loved them together. But if I had to pick one guest turn actress from the series, it’d probably be Hong Chau.
Having mentioned Hsu, I want to point out she’s also eligible in this category for American Born Chinese and Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; a co-star in that – Jane Lynch – is also possible for multiple including Only Murders, though Shirley MacLaine seems a frontunner. So does Taraji for Abbott, though that was not my fave performance and I don’t mind her omission here. I do agree with other commenters that Quinta could be a contender for SNL and also Keke, while a Black Lady Sketch Show also has some strong comedy contenders like Issa Rae. Becky Ann Baker was great as Ted’s mom but going by laughs, I probably had more from Harriet Walter as Rebecca’s mom on Ted Lasso (though she was also nominated last year).
I just don’t get why Madisynn is a thing. Nothing against the actress, but the character was an unfunny blip on an uneven-at-best show. Sometimes I don’t understand the internet.
I also completely agree with Nina Ariana getting a nom. I don’t think it is going to happen but she’s definitely deserving.
i think is a long shot, cause She Hulk was overall not very good, but one of the funniest performances of the year was Patty Guggenheim. she made what could have been an anoying character like Madisynn into a fan favorite. thats talent
Aubrey, Aubrey, Aubrey!!! Yes! Yes! and Yes!!
Taraji P. Henson from Abbott Elementary… She was terrific!
Patty Guggenheim FTW! Seriously.
Kennedy McMann in The Good Doctor… I really liked the backdoor pilot of The Good Lawyer… especially Kennedy’s performance.
