PAULA CASSIDY, played by Jessica Steen
A onetime GITMO interrogator and Agent Afloat, NCIS Special Agent Cassidy died tragically toward the end of Season 4, by tackling a suicide bomber through a door and thus saving the lives of nearby agents. Though possibly a character forgotten by all but the most committed of longtime fans, Paula’s death nudged former flame Tony to tell Jeanne Benoit that he loved her, setting in motion one of the series’ messier romantic arcs.
Using your definition of “Biggest,” I won’t argue too much since it happened after only 2 seasons. Kate’s exit was the most dramatic for me though b/c in a world of media-telegraphed exits, I was truly shocked when it happened. Nowadays, it’s virtually impossible for a character to be written/killed off without knowing it’s going to happen well in advance.
I’m pretty sure that it was know that a character wasn’t going to make it through the season, just wasn’t announced who it was going to be.
Only if the exit were to be revealed by the actor. Or the show, Because especially NCIS, there have been some exits that have been pretty sudden and without being revealed first. Like Diane, or Emily. Neither of those were known. Abby, Tony, Jackson, Ducky to leave because of course some had died in real life or the actors had revealed they were leaving. But some of the exits have been very big surprises. Some shows have been pretty good even in these days of social media of shocking the audience.
Kate’s was a shock. Even if there were rumors going up to the finale, that someone might be dying. But having nearly killing Tony with the plaque the episode before. The way they did it, was shocking. And it was only at the end of Season 2. Pretty early for a character to be leaving. I would not say Jackson’s or Ducky’s death were shocking since the portrayers had died in real life. So, it was a matter of when the show was going to honor the characters. I would say JACKIE VANCE and Eli DAVID was one of the most shocking ones, because it came out of nowhere. Right after Christmas break. Jenny was a biggie, but she was dying anyways, so she went out in a blaze of glory. But it was surprise, because it was right after the strike that it happened, when the show resumed. Obviously something changed within the storylines. And they decided to write out the character.
Emily Fornell’s death was the saddest moment, coupling the wordless scene in the emergency room with Vance’s reading of the poem written by Merrit Malloy.
Maybe not shaking up the show much, but in terms of a wallop, that was something else
That truly broke my heart. It was very much like real life, however, I was surprised that the show went there.
When the Kate Todd character was killed off I was really, really upset. I understand that she wanted off of the show to raise a family but it was still a very shocking exit to me.
I miss Sasha Alexander the most of all the characters that have left the series.
Tony and Ziva to me were the most devastating. And honestly. Maybe I’m in the minority here. But I really don’t miss Gibbs. At all. Like I get why Gibbs’s exit would be the biggest shock and what not. But losing Ziva and then Tony hurt more.
Ziva: mostly because I agreed with Cote, sending her back to Israel, again was boring and unnecessary. It showed they did not know what to do with the character, or how to advance her storyline.
Tony: Because he had been there since the beginning and to lose Tony, while also confirming Ziva’s demise (which wasn’t really a demize) and the realization that he had a daughter. It was all heartbreaking on many levels.
No way Paula Cassidy is last on this list. Her death was a huge deal, and totally badass.
Anything from during the Covid season 18 should be disregarded as it was all executed terribly and pretty much lazy writing.
Can’t fault the top 4 though on that list.
Still wish we got to see Jenny Shepard in her blaze of glory instead of just hearing shots and never seeing Lauren Holly again. She was great.
Also no WAY Kasie is even remotely close to Abby’s level!
Sasha made a good career choice I guess moving to a lead role on long time TNT show Rizzoli and Aisles which is available everywhere now on repeats and holds up well.. I have had no issues with any of the changes… I think only showing Tony back for Ducky memorial is OK… For all we know, Gibbs was there but never seen..
Tony and Ziva are the biggest for me. The exit of Gibbs has been less painful than I thought it might be.
I’d replace Emily with Diane for sure.
I’ll miss ‘Ducky’ but Pauly Perrette has been missed so much too. I’m saying nothing bad about the current crew, just that certain people stand out. I don’t see why ‘Jethro’ can’t show up for a cameo. Emily Wickersham was also good. I wasn’t a big fan of the DiNozzo-David dynamic, so I’ll leave it at that.
You left one out – Diane! Diane wasn’t a regular character but neither was Breena.
Kate and Clayton’s deaths were really hard. I loved both characters and I’m still recovering from the loss of Ducky. As for Gibbs and most of the others, they are just out in the ether somewhere doing their thing in my mind.
Kate should have been number 1. I still remember her being shot and it was 19 seasons ago. It was such a shock. DiNozzo had her blood on his face.
Ducky for emotional value should be number 2. The episode was so well done. Such a great way to honor one that such an integral part of the show.
Most people forget that Palmer was a replacement for Duckys original lab assistant. I think his name was Gerald and he left sometime in Season 1.
I agree with your top 5 characters, but not the order that you put them in. My top 5 would be as follows:
1. Donald “Ducky” Mallard
2. Caitlin “Kate” Todd
3. Leroy Jethro Gibbs
4. Tony Dinozzo
5. Ziva David
The top 2 characters hurt the most because they are dead. In Ducky’s case the actor who portrayed him is also gone. That makes it hurt more. As for Gibbs, Tony, and Ziva. I miss them, but they are out there in the world somewhere living their lives, and that makes their exits slightly easier to accept.
My Top 5 as well
