It’s crunch time for Comedy Central.
We’re coming up on a year since Trevor Noah stepped away from The Daily Show — and the cable network has yet to name his successor. A permanent host will not take his or her seat behind the desk until 2024, but a decision can’t be too far off.
Between January and October, 18 familiar faces were enlisted to fill the void left by Noah: Leslie Jones, Wanda Sykes, D.L. Hughley, Chelsea Handler, Sarah Silverman, Hasan Minhaj, Marlon Wayans, Kal Penn, Al Franken, John Leguizamo, Roy Wood Jr., Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, Dulce Sloan, Michael Kosta, Ronny Chieng, Desus Nice and Charlamagne tha God. Still to come: repeat turns by Silverman (week of Nov. 6) and Jones (week of Nov. 13), a Daily Show news team takeover (week of Nov. 20) and former correspondent Michelle Wolf (week of Nov. 27).
Minhaj, who at one time was considered the frontrunner, is reportedly out of the running after a damning New Yorker exposé revealed that he had embellished elements of his standup act. (You can watch his defense here.) Comedy Central’s search was further complicated in recent weeks by longtime correspondent Roy Wood Jr.’s decision to leave after eight years — though supposedly he’d still consider the gig, telling NPR, “If you’re offered the chance to host The Daily Show at any point in your life… you have to stop for a second and consider that.”
Before Comedy Central makes up its mind, we’d like to know who YOU think should replace Noah as host of The Daily Show. Review video of each guest host in action below, then vote in our poll and defend your choice in Comments.
*Stint cut short by start of WGA Strike on May 2
Samantha Bee
Yes, why isn’t Samantha Bee being considered?
Cause it’s been explicitly clear from Jon Stewart and Trevor Noah’s casting that they want fresh faces behind the desk and they’re not going to promote from within.
Bullpucky. If that were true, former Daily Show corespondents Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, and Hasan Minhaj would not be on the list.
I meant for the permanent Hosting Name-Is-On-the-Markee position, not guest hosting gigs.
Lewis Black stated that the only reason they gave Chang and the others a time in the seat is because they fought for having a chance to feel it – knowing they were never in the running. Heck Minhaj was noted to take the job and they did not even finish the rotation.
The whole thing is smoke and mirrors.
Minhaj didn’t finish the rotation because of the New Yorker exposé on his penchant for making s*** up. He had been the front-runner until that point despite being a previous correspondent.
If she were any good, she would still have a show on TBS. Her act wore thin rather quickly as her ratings dwindled. Her show should have been cancelled much earlier than it was on TBS.
YES. That was my vote LAST time!!!
I think Al Franken or Kal Penn would be brilliant choices as their experience in politics would give them unique insights and a different perspective to other late night hosts.
But as long as Jordan Klepper continues the field work, I’m happy.
I love Kal Penn. Not only super smart and knowledgeable but he also brings a warm presence and personality that’s really needed these days.
You didn’t offer us my choice: No permanent host, just continue to have new ones every week.
Yeah, I kinda agree with this, it’s kinda interesting to get some different perspectives this way
Whoever they choose has to have great interview skills, because some people we’ve seen so far don’t.
Michelle Wolf.
Simply for her going to that stupid ‘journalists’ dinner and making fun of them. Flint still doesn’t have clean water and neither does East Palestine.
Roy Wood Jr. He’s earned it over the years!
Anyone besides Sarah Silverman considering her recent statements on the news and also blackface, can’t forget about that one…
Jon Stewart
Tim Dillion
How about just canceling the show all together? It hasn’t been fun since Craig Kilborn was the original host.
I’ve always thought that Janeane Garofalo would be the perfect person to host the daily show; but i’m not sure if she’s even active in entertainment anymore.
Bill Maher LOL
Kinda hate myself for going with the white male – but if Hasan Minaj can’t do it, then Jordan Klepper – hands down, no contest. Would settle for Roy Wood Jr. I watched most of the above, but either their schtick gets old really fast… only good in small doses; or they are just not up to the big time of hosting the whole show.
It might have been nice if a women stepped up. But among the choices that we’ve seen, really no standouts.
Desi Lydic should permanently host The Daily Show. Hands down.I have watched her since day 1. Zero contest.I have seen all the rest. Thse others are boring AND stupid. Roy Wood? Are you kidding me? Ddesi is smart. Fun-loving. Engagng. Educated. Generous. Funny as all else. She can go where no woman has gone before. I consider her above Sam Bee.(That says a lot, because Sam and I are Canadian.) Desi is from Kentucky. So cool. No oother person in this list comes close to Des..Please stop putting up Al Franken. He was fine in the 80’s Not now. And seriously? Wolf? A woman who’s voice can literally scrape wallpaper off the wall. Desi 3-4 nights a week with John on Mondays would be AWESOME. Silverman is the only one that MAY have the chops to do it. Desi is fresh. Also. Wicked smart.
