Mrs. Russell and Mrs. Astor’s war for societal supremacy is far from over. HBO has renewed The Gilded Age for a third season, TVLine has learned. A release date is not yet known.
The Dec. 16 Season 2 finale saw the long-awaited first kiss between Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) and Larry (Harry Richardson), among other interesting developments.
“I think it was always in the background,” series creator Julian Fellowes tells TVLine of that lip lock. “Certainly when the actors were cast, they were cast as a couple who looked compatible on screen if we got there. You can never be too definite, because sometimes performances don’t happen, or things occur, or ideas come in and your original plan isn’t what’s adhered to. But in that instance, I think we always knew they were headed for each other.”
Set in 1880s New York City, The Gilded Age stars Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector as Bertha and George Russell, a “new money” couple battling for supremacy in society and business.
Other key players in their games include Christine Baranski as “old money” socialite Agnes van Rhijn, Cynthia Nixon as Agnes’ sister Ada Brook, Denée Benton as Agnes’ secretary Peggy Scott, Blake Ritson as Agnes’ closeted son Oscar van Rhijn, Taissa Farmiga as the Russells’ daughter Gladys, Kelli O’Hara as Agnes’ other niece Aurora Fane, and Donna Murphy as the all-powerful Caroline Astor.
Additional series regulars include Sullivan Jones as T. Thomas Fortune, Patrick Page as Richard Clay, Simon Jones as Mr. Bannister, Jack Gilpin as Mr. Church, Debra Monk as Mrs. Armstrong, Kristine Nielsen as Mrs. Bauer, Taylor Richardson as Bridget, Ben Ahlers as John “Jack” Treacher, Douglas Sills as Monsieur Baudin, Celia Keenan-Bolger as Mrs. Bruce, Michael Cerveris as Mr. Watson, Erin Wilhelmi as Adelheid and Kelley Curran as Miss Turner.
Now that we know The Gilded Age is returning for a third season, what are your hopes for the show’s future? Drop ’em all in a comment below.
Please renew the gilded age love it
In the long list of series regulars mentioned, how could you possibly omit the legend Audra McDonald as Dorothy Scott and John Douglas Thompson as her wonderful husband and Peggy’s pharmacist father, Arthur Scott? And by the way Michael Cerveris (Watson) won a Tony for his portrayal of the dad on Fun Home – what an incredible role…and I was fortunate to see him in it a few years ago. He is wonderful as Watson.
I don’t know if this will come to pass, but I have a secret wish that the Duke is a fake…I hope they continue to battle it out for him and then have it turn out that he wasn’t even a Duke. It was much harder back then to find out real identities with no internet, etc. (as we saw with poor Oscar’s disastrous relationship with “Maude” which led to his (and Agnes’) financial ruin). The whole show has a strong, delicious recurrent theme of deceit, reinvention and opportunism emblematic of the new America of the time, and I think it would be hilarious if the Duke were actually a charlatan posing as one….
I just love this series. Hoping that Marian and Larry would have a great love and trusted friendship between them as a foundation for a wonderful marriage.
My heart broke for Oscar and hoping he will find a great woman and will find his way through the mess of the con. I think Pinkertons could find that woman and her accomplice.
And I love the Russell’s love for one another and the way they are always scheming together. Carrie Coon is wonderful as Bertha Russell.
I love all the actors in this series and have enjoyed it as I did Downton Abby.
Super excited for season 3. Curious as to how George will react to Bertha promising Gladys to the Duke, and how she will get Gladys to marry him.
Excited for the power shift between Ada and Agnes. And to see a proper court ship Larry and Marian.
Absolutely LOVE this show! Already counting down the days to Season 3. Hooray!
Hooray! Absolutely LOVE this show! Already counting down the days to Season 3. Thank you to everyone involved in the production of this magnificent show.
Can’t wait for the hilarious scenes when newly-widowed and very rich Ada? (i’m bad with names) starts running the household the way SHE wants to run it. Can’t wait!
Hope that Marion and Larry get married they belong together and I love the power couple in the Russell’s, George is the best and his wife Omg best couple ever
This is the best period piece since Downton and now that there will be a season 3, I’m hoping for a Season 4 !!!
So happy its returning. I just adore Bertha and can’t wait to see what happens with Larry and Marian after the kiss.
Great program. So happy it’s renewed!
Happy to see that “The Gilded Age” has been renewed. Great show.
Thrilled! I liked season one, but the show REALLY came into itself with season two. Can’t wait to see where we go from here as so much of the dynamics has changed.
Wonderful! HBO is so fickle you can never be sure.
I’m just happy that gilded age was renewed! Now, let’s have 12-15 episodes instead of a lousy EIGHT!! The Handmaids Tale garnered more than Eight!!!
The setting the relationships the intrigue Deserve More than Eight!
Yayyy…really hoping and praying this would continue. Something to look forward too for next year😊
I love the show, the history, fashions, interactions between the haves and have not’s. I look forward to each episode and got the app specifically to watch The Guilded Age!!
Woohoo Sooo happy it’s been renewed!!
Love this show and all the story lines.
Best news of the holiday season!
I’m excited for Larian and all the drama their relationship will bring. Aunt Agnes will not be happy but I think Bertha might be.
Gladys will not marry the Duke.
I’d love to see Sutton Foster and Will Swenson drop in.
this season is very enjoyable.thanks
This is a pleasant surprise. I didn’t think it would get renewed given the Discovery merger.
I thought they did a good job with the season two finale. It worked well enough as a series finale and did not end with a cliff hanger (like a carriage careening toward Pumpkin then fading to black).
I’ve been rooting for Marion and Larry since episode 1 and am digging the Jack and the clock storyline.
Great. All that plot in the last couple of episodes made its fate feel very up in the air. The Larry/Marion coupling was telegraphed in season 1. The Russells may be ambitious, but they are good people and I could see Marion being drawn to that. Bertha and Agnes will make trouble, of course, but it’s on.
I just love everything about this show. The story lines an costumes. I’ve watched it over and over and still love it
leave they people as they are. I love this series. All the plots and the out comes are wonderful. I am wondering what Bertha is got in mind for Gladys. I want to see her stand up to her mother..
Prediction: Bertha will try to marry Gladys off to the prince. Gladys will fight against it but eventually marry Oscar. If she’s already married, she can’t marry the duke. So begins a scandalous marriage of convenience where they turn a blind eye to the other’s discretions. Perhaps the servant with the clocks will become a member of society and have an Oscar-sanctioned affair with Gladys. Also, because of all this marriage hoopla, George and Bertha get a divorce.
