Saddle up, y’all. Now that Paramount Network has officially renewed Yellowstone for Season 5 — and considering that the mega-hit’s Season 4 finale rustled up a million more viewers than the 14 million who stampeded to their sofas to watch its season premiere, was there ever any doubt that it would? — we’re doing a deep dive into the series’ loose ends that still need tying up and questions that still need answering.
There are, to put it mildly, some biggies, regarding everything from patriarch John’s reluctant run for governor (and whether Jamie’s downfall means that he can bail on it) to Kayce and Monica’s marriage (and whether or not it will last long enough to usher into the world Tate’s new baby brother or sister). Take a look below at the list of questions that’s been keeping us up nights, then hit the comments to add any head-scratchers that you think we’ve left out.
Cool as the proverbial cucumber, she shrugged off Caroline’s promise to put her behind bars for committing corporate espionage against Market Equities. But can the tough-talking conniver really keep from falling out of the frying pan and into the fire this time? Her best — perhaps her only? — chance may be if the answer to the next question is yes.
He wants to be governor about as much as he wants to be shot again. However, he’s willing to see the campaign through if only to ensure that weaselly adopted son Jamie never gets to take a load off in that seat of power. Will John feel the need to stick it out, though, now that Beth has blackmailed Jamie into murdering his biological father and obtained photographic evidence of the crime?
Beth warned Jamie that he should’ve chosen one of the first two dire options with which she presented him. Now she owns him — but what does that mean? Will she and John make him their puppet in the governor’s office? Will they strong-arm him into pulling out of the gubernatorial race? Or will Beth’s plot altogether backfire, resulting in her loathed brother forging a heretofore-missing bond with their dad?
Since Jefferson White remains a series regular and Kathryn Kelly’s been made one, too, we know we’ll be seeing more of the lovebirds in Season 5. But does that also mean that we’ll keep cutting away from the Yellowstone to the action at the Four Sixes, thus setting the stage for the Texas-set spinoff? Or will the engaged couple just keep visiting Jimmy’s old stomping grounds every week or two?
Although John managed to get the environmental activist’s prison sentence reduced, there’s been no mention of Piper Perabo reprising her recurring role in Season 5. Is that a clue that maybe, once freed from the pokey, the character decides to get the hell outta Dodge and away from the Duttons — something that most people probably would’ve done after being confronted by a knife-wielding Beth?
We know, we know — the kid said that he doesn’t have any family. But is that true? Is there no aunt or uncle out there, no grandparent who might seek out the teenager with a mind to get him out of the stable and into a classroom? It’s hard to believe that there’s not, right? Our money’s on that person showing up right about the time that Rip decides Carter is his and Beth’s kid and she finally lets the boy start calling her mama.
In two seasons, Jen Landon’s marble-mouthed character has mostly leered at her fellow ranch hands and confounded them with her unique manner of speaking. Now that the actress has been promoted to series regular, will we get to actually, you know, know Teeter? Will we gain any insight into what we’re told is now her capital-R relationship with Colby? Will we at very least get a Teeter-to-English dictionary with which to translate her mutterings?
The wolf’s return prompted John’s golden boy to go on a vision quest that showed him “the end of us.” But we’ve counted the couple out before and been proven wrong. So why should we be any more concerned this time? Is their fate for once a fait accompli, or can their destiny still be altered? And if their marriage can be saved, we’re definitely gonna need an answer to this next one.
Stoked as we were to see Tanaya Beatty return in Season 4, her character’s reappearance didn’t seem to serve any real purpose. She professed her unrequited love to Kayce, made Monica rather hilariously jealous, and that was… that? No, that can’t be. In Season 5, we’re gonna have to see how far “Ms. Pouty Lips” will go to get that wedding band off her crush’s finger.
It’s the perfect place to dump a body, sure. But by now, there have to be so many rotting corpses off the side of that cliff in Wyoming that somebody would have to come (literally) sniffing around. If the feds ever got involved — or Sheriff Haskell’s by-the-book replacement — can you imagine the number of murders in which the Duttons would be implicated?
No. We’re not letting this one go. When John was gunned down in the street in the Season 3 finale, he was helping a young mom change her flat. She was shot dead, we saw. But what about her son, who’d been sent into the weeds to retrieve lug nuts? Was he another casualty of Garrett’s hit on the Duttons? Is he still in that field? We’ve gotta know!
When Kayce said “I saw the end of us” I took that “us” to mean the Dutton family. A.k.a the end of the family dynasty. Did anyone else interpret it that way?
I didn’t take it that way. Especially because of his dream about Avery and then. How Monica looked when he said it.
Kayce would never blurt out “the end of us” to Monica like that. He’s way too guarded in what he tells her. It’s definitely going to have a different meaning than the end of their marriage. The end of the Duttons owning Yellowstone is my guess.
I concur and am 99% certain this means the end of the Dutton Dynasty. All the death, mayhem and family “cannibalism” will catch-up to the Duttons. As an aside, the name is Yellowstone – does their land become part of our national park – a Dutton legacy.?

Yep, that’s the ‘us’ I thought he referred to, with the two futures he saw being to continue the fight against the capitalist corporations and see the Duttons lose everything, or to put everything into a Trust with the Reservation and Tate & coming siblings’s future.
I want to know who is this mysterious wife & son that showed up with the biological father. I can’t make the connection as to where they came from?
A couple of seasons ago, Jamie was running for public office. The woman worked for just campaign manager (PR maybe). They started sleeping together and she got pregnant.
She wanted Jamie to break ties with John Dutton. She moved away because Jamie wouldn’t break with John. Jamie knew she was pregnant but figured he would never see her again.
I had the same question about “lug nut boy” by friend that always watches the show said he was killed too but IDK.
I don’t think the shooter saw the boy. He was bent over looking for the lug nuts which should have been where John changed the driver’s side rear tire.
And that brings up the question, how did the lug nuts get so far away?
Lug nut boy carried the lug nuts with him when he went to relieve himself.
My unanswered question- why doesn’t Jamie’s assistant ever tell him that it’s Beth waiting for him in his office? She always just says someone is waiting,but never tells Jamie who it is.
I have wondered that same thing every, every time!!! How has she not been fired?!? She has to have heard the yelping and the throwing!
Maybe Beth told her not to tell him, it’s a surprise. Or Beth threatened to do something to her if she did tell Jamie. That sounds more like Beth.
I think you’re closer to the truth. Beth terrifies most people especially those she’s not related to or grown up with.

As long as Kayce is alive (after his scant screen time in the most recent season) I’m fine with however his storyline plays out. I realize how old-fashioned I seem, but as long the youngest Dutton is married, the other gals need to leave him alone!!!

I think you covered most of my questions. Something I don’t have to know, but just want to know is a little bit of Ryan and Colby’s backstories. We know Lloyd was on the rodeo circuit, Teeter is from Texas, Walker is from Texas & ended up in prison in Montana because of a bar fight, but the ways that Ryan and Colby arrived are a mystery. How Ryan become a livestock agent is also a mystery. Plus we don’t even know their last names.
Teeter said she was from Texarkana, Texas. When questioned, she admitted that she was from north of the Red River. That would put her from Arkansas.
David, Texarkana is a city on both sides of the Texas Arkansas border, and indeed it is noeth of the red river
I pretty sure Ryan has no criminal record, that’s why John made him a livestock agent. No skeletons to dig up. Not sure about Colby, but I know they both wear the brand now, because of John old friend they took the brand from. They all got branded that night.
How or why did the Dutton’s adopt Jamie in the first place? Was he a relation or just a neighbor? I gotta know.
His bio father killed his mother although we don’t yet know if the mom had any connection to John or his late wife. The Duttons then adopted Jamie but didn’t ever tell him.
Remember when John Dutton was sitting with his grandpa on the rock when his grandpa died in the grandpa said I miss your brother to so I’m wondering if maybe Jaime’s biological father might’ve been his brother and that’s why they adopted him
John had an older son who passed away just before the series started. This son is the one John is talking about.
Jamie’s bio father told him that he was drunk, he might have been on drugs as well, I think.
I would like to know what happened to the young boy when John Dutton was shot also 😳 I keep thinking they would show that but never did 😆 hope they do this Season…..😉
Lug nut boy went away like Beth many assistants I hope Monica and Kayce take the show and move back to the lodge to have their baby who will take over ranch with Tate some day I hope Beth gets knocked down a few pegs

I just love that you referred to Teeter as marble mouthed because that’s exactly how she sounds. Once you get the hang of it you can understand but it’s mostly cursing. lol
I think Avery leaving the bunk house suddenly, left the door open for the writer to slip in a secret hook -up that possible happened between her and Kasey…now running into each other is stirring up emotions between them. It’s the opportunity to end the boring wining character of Monica who constantly flip flops on kasey! Beth and Rip need to be kinder to carter. He should be the son they would have had. If Taylor Sheridan was smart he would keep the spit fire of Beth and her wit going in the business end of the show and show her softer side at home with Rip at home!! Rips loyalty to Beth and the Duttons makes him amazing! I would love to see Jamie made into a puppet but after Rip beats his butt for what he did to Beth as a young girl! And show him what suffering is!!!
And what about the Beck brothers’ plane? The one with the bomb in the gas tank?

Monica is bringing Kaycee’s character to yawn city. He’s better than that. Monica is a whine *** and knew what she was getting into when she married Kaycee. Bring them back to the ranch already.
Jaime had 2 paths to choose from! One clearly was end if he and Monica but I bet he chooses to the other… Too much love there,!

I’m hoping for a time jump of about 10 months. John is governor. M.E. is kicked off his land, paying through the nose for cleanup. With permanent sanctions against them. Blocking Beth’s (she was out of character for some reason in the latter half of the 4th season) arrest or pardoning her. What was Beth doing with all that time on her computer? Plotting the downfall of M.E?
Monica (the worst character on the show IMHO)has the child. Maybe Kayce leaves her for something she has done (I hope, I hope). He saw the end of their relationship. I never thought of Jamie as weak. Bullied? Out of his depth? Yes, without a doubt. Maybe the question of his mother’s connection to the Duttons will finally be answered (was she related to John’s wife or even related to John himself). I pray the barrel racers are gone by then also!
Please tell the back story on why John Dutton adopted Jamie…!
I wrote an ending for lug nut boy. Started it by calling his agent. Not really. When Rip found John, he saw the woman dead on the ground nearby. After getting John to the hospital, he sent the chopper back for her and they found the boy holding his dead mom in his arms weeping. They brought them to the hospital, called his dad in Encino, & he came & took his son & wife’s body home.
They better not split up Kayce & monica
-Beth’s visit to the prison would NEVER end the way they showed us, sorry, too unreal.
-Lug nut boy had to have gotten shot too but the producers left that picture out for us, thank you!!
-Tanaya returns but hopefully NOT to replace gorgeous Monica but maybe as a love interest for the other ranch hand/ cattle inspector.
– Teeters story does NOT need to be told. Just keep her dialogue funny as hell, her interest in Colby hot and her commitment to the Y strong!
– The 4- sixes story – cool. The barrel racers story- make her find love with one of the other ranch hands- maybe the old man!!
– Beth looked great being called mama. Ruined it tho’ to destroy that boy. Fix that.
– DO NOT want to see Monica going to big chief’s bed. He seems like trouble.
– Love the story about fighting the land grabs and the fight to keep the land pristine.
– Love the story about the Indians that deserve a form of True reparations for their and our part in history.
– Be careful before this show becomes like Dallas … or is it too late!?
