9-1-1‘s Oliver Stark is striking back at online trolls who are knocking his character’s bisexuality storyline.
“If you are one of the smaller group of people commenting on my posts about how this has ruined the show, I would like you to know that I truly don’t care,” the actor wrote on his Instagram stories on Saturday.
In the latest episode of the ABC series, Stark’s Buck realized his feelings for his pal Tommy were stronger than “friendship.” What followed was described by TVLine’s Andy Swift as “one of the most satisfyingly steamy sequences we’ve gotten from this show in a minute,” and it ended with a kiss. (Read full breakdown of Buck’s sexual awakening.)
“This is a show about love and inclusion,” Stark wrote. “It’s featured queer relationships from the very beginning including a beautiful Black lesbian marriage played out by two of the best actresses I’ve ever watched.
“If one other character finding a new facet to his sexuality and [realizing] his bisexuality is your deal breaker — I fear you’ve missed the entire point of the show,” he continued. “You are not required to announce your departure.”
The actor added that he has received positive reactions to Buck’s sexual revelation, which have left him “humbled and overwhelmed.”
Buck and Tommy’s relationship will only be further explored, as the couple is set to embark on their first date in Episode 5. (Get a sneak peek.)
Love this – it also makes me think of the sad and angry people in the other articles, especially ‘Anonymous’ who clearly lacks media literacy and literacy in general. Mad people can stay mad, we won with Bi Buck and Oliver is incredible in the role. “You do not need to announce your departure”
BYE bigots!!!!!
Well said. I particularly liked the line about, “You are not required to announce your departure.” If you don’t care for the storyline, You can choose to watch something else.
you ruin 911 series why could be someone else in the series or someone new not one of the main charatures
How is it ruined?
Why would a troll answer a reasonable question!
Oooh William! Please explain how, exactly, the series has been ruined! Please be specific! We REALLY want you to tell on yourself here, boo.
I think it’s 👍 great that my favorite character Buck is exploring his sexuality!
By the way the series has
not been ruined.
You can easily stop watching the show if you aren’t happy about a storyline!
I’m proudly going to continue to watch the show.
This show has been tainted in a bad way. You can pretend it isn’t but it is and you know it.
You are extremely naive and possibly intolerant if you believe that people do not change or discover things about themselves-including sexual attraction later in life. People divorce over it and others sneak around living a lie. At my 10 year high school reunion, a straight friend made a move on me and we ended up hooking up. It happens way more than you think. There are likely friends, family members, and co-workers who are gay, bi and in the closet. Buck has swung the closet door open and it’s wonderful and normal.
John Wick ,
This show “has not,
been tainted”!
If anything it has gotten better.
Bravo to Oliver Stark and to
his character Buck !
It’s not tainted but your wrong opinion certainly is. Go watch GAC with Candace Cameron Bure and exist within an unrealistic bubble, boo.
Tainted by what? Reality? People grow, evolve, and change throughout their lives. Characters on TV are no different. If they remained stagnant, that would be boring.
The scene was excellent…. The acting great… Continue on and leave the others behind.
I felt way more chemistry between Buck and Tommy than I have with any of Buck’s girlfriends. I did like he and Abby together though, but he brought more heat with Tommy in my opinion. I look forward to seeing where it goes.
To be completely fair, Abby was larger than life and no other female character could ever compete with her. That being said, Tommy has his own presence and all his scenes on Chim’s and Hen’s origin stories to back him up. So I’m eager to see this relationship grow.
But Tommy is not here longterm. He will just be in a handful of episodes.
Abby Clark wasn’t here longterm either. She must haven been featured on 10 or 12 episodes tops. And she was on a relationship with Buck for only half of them. Still made an impression though.
My point is, this will not be a relationship nor is Tommy a regular. Abby was!
It would be pretty cool if Buck dated a woman next. (Doesn’t have to be anything serious – could just be a rebound thing.) So many people ignorantly believe that bisexuality doesn’t exist, and is just a “step” on the way to being gay. I’d love to see him date both sexes in the future.
No, Buck has dated more than enough women to know there’s something missing for him. Even as a cishet woman, I find straight ships boring, and over represented on screen. Time to bat for the other team, Buck!
Buck hasn’t had much luck with keeping a girlfriend for long so maybe he will have better luck with the other side of his sexuality. Go for it, Buck.
Can’t say I wasn’t blown away!!! I was like”what!!! what just happen?” LOL but it was a great, what the hell just happened seen” good job.
That was untoward the end I thought Tommy would kiss Buck but feared it would be the formerly stereotypical negative reaction. But instead it was wondrous.
How you gonna be a homophobe and choose to watch a Ryan Murphy production? Haha these people FAFO!!
Not to mention, a show with a very prominent lesbian marriage. You really can’t expect bigotry to make any sense.
My only complaint is that Buck didn’t kiss Eddie!
I assumed Buck knew he was bisexual already, so what surprised me is that it was a discovery for him. But if it was and this was his first kiss, he would never make the first move. Not to Eddie, not to Tommy, not to TK even if he got that impression in the crossover episode.
Oh, wait for next week…lol
Go Oliver! Watching the show is voluntary. If you have a problem with this—then move da fuq on. The story arc has just started for goodness sake. Intolerance in this day and age speaks volumes.
I like the relationship between Buck and Tommy. They both hotties in real life and on the show.
I am just glad it was not Eddie. Don’t get me wrong, I love Buck and I wish him well. I do wish he would have found love but if you want him to be bi-sexual go for it. As for Eddie, WOW, what a hunk and he and his wonderful son are a great asset to this show. I love how much he loves Christopher. It warms my heart.
If Eddie was part of the queer community,He still would be a hunk, an asset to the station , his community and the show. He would still love his son passionately and have the same wo derful relationships. It’s about the person, not who one has sex with.
What does his relationship with his son and being an asset to the show have to do with Eddie’s sexuality? Eddie can also explore his sexuality if they decide to take him down that route (and I’m thinking he will as well) and he will still be a hunk, a father and an asset.
Your commenting is suggesting that 1) bisexual people are incapable of finding love and 2) that “hunks” can’t be queer. Please educate yourself.
Thank you because Matthew Bomer is gay and ridiculously hot! 🔥
I’m sorry but I couldn’t watch it! I’m not much for the love scenes, more action less sex!
Since when is a single clothes mouth kiss sex??? I keep seeing this take and it’s confusing me. It’s not like there aren’t other couples on the show who are affection with each other.
Who had sex?
Well Bobby and Athena sure did… Funny how them in bed together gets silence but a rather chaste kiss gets all this uproar.
One kiss is not sex! 🤦🏻♀️ Sounds like you need to ask yourself why you had an issue watching two men kiss. 🙄
I definitely do not think I was shown sex when I go to weddings and the couple exchanges a kiss at the ceremony. Or when I see any couple kissing, at any place, at any time, including in front of babies, children, the elderly, and puppies.
Stark, I think you missed the point. The homosexuality with Hen and her wife was natural and there from the beginning. Viewers were strung along for 6 years with you in hetero-sexual relationships. There was no real need to change this other than for the shock value. I’m okay that you don’t care. Not going to announce my departure, because no once cares about my viewing habits but me. Not that it matters, but I have 2 relatives that have roles on the show. We’ve had some discussions and will leave it at that.
Are you really telling someone WHO IS ON THE SHOW that he missed the point OF HIS OWN SHOW? The reaching you had to do for this one!
This is total BS. As someone who was with only women for 20+ years, then realized I was bi, and have dated both men and women since, it may be something a person feels but cannot articulate until the right time comes. There are self realizations that can happen in time. Everyone wants to take something that can happen in real life, compared to some of the disasters the show features (which have entertainment value) and make a HUGE deal out of it. There was nothing unnatural about this at all.
Your comment about family on the show is BS. You have trolled on this site in many, many comment sections. Lying to try and make an obviously failing point is pathetic.
The show basically is now the same as lone star but i felt like we earned the relationship on that one is this one was just force fed to us. Love hens character and her relationship and josh is a great character on 911 too but forcing buck into this type of relationship so deep into a show just feels messed up. Still gonna watch the show but this wasn’t a great moment for me. And the actor shouldn’t care or be criticized at all for this. When i watch a show i just like to feel that I things happen as they grow during a show and buck went from I’ll sleep with any woman to having real relationships with them to you know what this guy just kissed me i like guys now. Sorry just didn’t feel like it fit the show at all. Again this is just my opinion.
To me, it would only feel “force fed” and unearned if they were already trying to sell it as a great endgame romance. The people involved have indicated that this is mainly about Buck’s self-discovery, and that they see Tommy as an “entry-level” relationship. Less about the character himself and more about how being with him makes Buck feel (and yes, I do think those can be two separate things). There are definitely some weird takes from people already planning their marriage, but shipping in the 911 fandom *always* goes haywire. I don’t believe that the show is suggesting they are Tarlos 2.0.
I like Lone Star, but as same-gender relationship goes it felt as exploitative as Grey’s Anatomy to me. 9-1-1, on the other hand, never treated Michael as “the gay character”; he was a father to Athena’s children, the family Bobby play detectives with (I really miss those episodes), the son-in-law Athena’s mother never agree with and he just to happened to be gay. Buck himself is the same Buck, with the same personality, flaws and father issues (What I’d give to be the one to tell his parents about Tommy!). And he just so happens to be bisexual.
It took Grey’s Anatomy 5 years to have a bisexual character. And then executives immediately nixed that relationship and started over, adding a lesbian character that was softer to pair up with that bisexual character with. It took another 10 years (15 overall) to have a gay regular. Meanwhile, straight couples were having so much sex that they were having ghost sex. They had dream threeways. They had all the sex. They had panties pinned to work boards. So many doctors were doing it, that even a veterinarian was in the mix. And, somehow, the LGBT relationship were forced?
Loving the fact that we’re getting rid of the homophobes and biphobes from the fandom and replacing them with new fans who are allies! The amount of people that have started streaming 911 since the kiss is crazy. Looking forward to seeing the ratings next week – and also the 3x week midseason hiatus is perfect. Gives everyone a chance to catch up on Hulu so viewership skyrockets for the final 5 eps of the season – and ABC can renew 911 until season 15 and make every character gay, bi, pan, lesbian, etc – just to make the trolls even more mad muwahahaha!
Actually, that’s the real point here…increased ratings = increased profits.
And I’m one of the ones who will start watching! it all balances out :)
Welcome to the fandom.
Are Buck’s “real relationships with women” in the room with us? He’s arguably had 2x “serious” relationships: Abby in season 1 – weird mother/son vibes. Taylor in season 5 – toxic af. Other than that, he has been “hiding his true feelings from others” like he said to his therapist in season 4, having unfulfilling flings or playing house with Eddie and Christopher. Sometimes sexuality creeps up on you later in life and that’s okay. But the fact that he was so promiscuous at the beginning of the show, treating women as objects and then has never had a serious, long term relationship with a woman is a massive clue. Perhaps some people find it so hard to see the clues because they’ve never been through anything similar (or they’re just not that observant) but the rainbow coalition have seen the clues for years.
*this is a reply to Jon btw. Not sure why it didnt appear under his comment.
I’ve got to agree with him. Hen and Karen’s marriage, Athena’s husband coming out to his wife and children, Josh mentoring of Maddie the storylines have all been there from the very begining of the show and they all grew as organically as any other. And I have no doubt this will be the case with Buck and Tommy
Bravo Oliver!!! Very well said. The #1 thing that this series has always been and love is that it has always been inclusive from day one, showing many types of people and relationships.
Oliver Stark, not saying I wasn’t surprised, Wow we were. But in a good way. Not being aware of this facet made for a really lost Buck. (I often shouted “Grow up” at a Buck spiral.
But the look on Buck’s face was so wonderful and joy-filled.
Buck being Buck, I am sure I’ll be yelling “grow up”. In the meantime best wishes.
I read about this and decided to binge watch the first four episodes of this season and I’m back hooked on 9-1-1 again. The people who are complaining don’t realize, sexuality is fluid and it changes overtime. Even in str8 relationships, some of the things that turned you on a few years ago might not hit that same spot now! I love Buck’s bisexuality and hope they let it continue, this really does happen in the real world.
If people don’t like the relationships on this show, then turn off the TV or switch channels! I personally love the show, the actors, and the characters! If people don’t like it then that’s tough! It’s their problem and not the fault of the actors or characters!
i love how he claps back at people who have indeed missed the entire point of the show and the character. there’s even a woman in his comment who literally asked “what about the women who have a crush on buck?”.
1. you can continue your crush; nothing has changed
2. buck is bisexual, so again; the crush can continue
3. and this is perhaps the most important one; buck is FICTIONAL. the crush is not gonna be reciprocated.
–
meanwhile the show is doing what is always does best; telling incredible, beautiful storylines in a very nuanced way, portayed by actors who understand the task at hand, and the importance of it.
thank you oliver!
I live the direction they are taking Bucks character and Oliver Stark’s response is pure class. The whole “outrage” is weird considering the whole Eddie and Buck shipping since the start of their friendship!
I love 911. Who cares if Buck is with a man? You don’t like it, bye. It’s been renewed for season 8, so your departues mean nothing.
Yeah OK, Thanx for your input! it means a lot.
