ABC Renews 9 More Series Including Not Dead Yet — 2 Shows Still on Bubble
Not Dead Yet has lived up to its title: ABC has renewed Gina Rodriguez’ rookie sitcom for a second season.
The network, as expected, also picked up The Conners for a sixth season, while punting a decision on remaining bubble shows Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds until “a later date.”
On the unscripted side, ABC on Tuesday renewed America’s Funniest Home Videos (for Season 34), American Idol (for Season 7 on ABC and a 22nd season overall), The Bachelor (for Season 28), Bachelor in Paradise (for Season 9), Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (for Season 4), Celebrity Jeopardy! (for Season 2) and Shark Tank (for Season 15).
ABC’s spate of pickups on Tuesday join the previously renewed Grey’s Anatomy, Will Trent, Station 19, Abbott Elementary, The Good Doctor and The Rookie. (Here’s your full list of ABC’s renewals and cancellations.) [pmc_inline_gallery]
In its inaugural season (which wrapped May 3), Not Dead Yet averaged 3.4 million total viewers and a0.5 demo rating (with Live+7 playback). Out of the five sitcoms that ABC has aired this TV season, it ranks No. 3 in total audience and trails only Abbott Elementary and The Conners in the demo.
ABC is expected to unveil its schedule for the 2023-24 TV season later today.
Any word on Holey Moley?
I was wondering about that and To Tell the Truth. I know Holey Moley had been casting via MysticArts Pictures, so I assume it is coming back at some point but without an an announcement??
I asked Matt about Holey Moley in a separate article and I don’t know if he responded or not. I do know the past two seasons were filmed back to back in 2021 so there’s been about a two-year gap in filming. I do hope it returns.
With the writer’s strike it is probably a very safe bet to return.
I’m not too sure about that JD. ABC has been completely silent about it since then.
I can’t remember where I read it, but I read that the area where the Holey Moley course (and Wipeout before it) was built was no longer available, and that the production team hadn’t been able to find a new location with the right amount of space for the set up they need.
I thought they were using one of the versions built for an international version of the show, possibly Australia. I know the casting notice did say that a valid passport was needed to apply.
I’m so hoping they pick up Home Economics- it’s our weekly family show and it’s great!

Writer’s Strike. Which may soon be actors and directors as well. They want to keep their options open for when it breaks, they may not have new pilots on the back burner to greenlight when they can just ramp up production of an existing show.

The episodes this summer are a continuation of season 3. I don’t think it’s been renewed for season 4 yet, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be if it’s now just a summer show.
I am hoping they renew Home Economics. It has grown on me and I find it very funny. Fingers crossed.
Still mad about Big Sky! Why ABC???
Same reason anything gets cancelled. Ratings. Quality is irrelevant if not enough people are watching.
It’s also about ownership
While that can play a factor (and did for FOX with 9-1-1 and The Resident, and for CBS with East New York), that is not the case for Big Sky. It was produced by 20th Television which is owned by Disney since the acquisition five-ish years back of FOX properties (but not network).

Big Sky took a swing in S3 to revamp the show into a more “case of the week” combined with a season-long mystery format and IMO it didn’t work. It seemed to forget that Cassie and Jenny were the leads, not Beau and Jenny. I was hoping S4 would be a return to form but alas.
The big swing was needed because the show went off course in season 2. Season three was much better than S2 with the addition of Jensen Ackles and guest star Reba McEntire. ABC made a mistake with cancelling Big Sky and Alaska Daily.
Hard disagree. The show didn’t need another pretty boy for Jenny to make googly eyes at. I’m glad this show was canceled because it got progressively worse since its awesome first season.
Jensen is like 45. Hardly a boy.

I’m one that thinks season 3 was a big improvement over season 2 also. But it had it shot and I would have preferred Alaska Daily (#1 choice) or The Company You Keep (#2) over it. Sadly none of them made it :(
Talk on the street was that David E Kelley was going to be more involved in Season 4. Now he has to find a new job for his sister-in-law.

I really like the ensemble for *Not Dead Yet*. I don’t think eveything n the show works yet, but I am glad they are getting another season to work on that.
Exactly. The ensemble is great. But there is something that is just not working that I can’t quite put my finger on. A little part is the boss lady (Lauren ash/lexi) which stinks because that lady is hilarious. But her entire character and lines are useless and just don’t work. But there is also something….maybe missing? Idk. I just can’t quite nail it

Love the show, but hoping two things that were hinted at in the finale don’t come to pass – Edward flirting with Lexi and his semi-romantic talk with Nell. Both of those would be horrible for the show. Definitely see the potential for season 2 and glad this show is off the bubble.

99% of the time it’s just that simple math…unless you have a nielsen box you don’t matter that much cause that’s still how broadcast works

I’m guessing because their ratings are terrible. If people don’t watch, then shows get cancelled regardless of quality.
I think the problem is they don’t give people enough time to “find” the shows.

she did tell him but then she dumped him a minute later lol. so no one else currently knows.
He didn’t believe her though and isn’t sticking around, perhaps Sara meant one of her friends that will still be part of the show. But she might be more reluctant to after what happened with him.
She told her ex-maybe-current-boyfriend and they ended up splitting (seemingly permanently). I want her to tell a friend or someone she can confide in! She just seems so alone all the time.
I like Not Dead Yet – happy to see that back. Rookie Feds – if that didn’t come back I wouldn’t be unhappy. The only time I watch that is when they have a crossover with The Rookie, clearly an attempt to boost the ratings.
I agree. The original Rookie is a great show and I just can’t get into Feds. It’s annoying that producers wanted to try and pull people in through crossovers. They are trying to do the whole “Chicagoland” thing that CBS does w/it’s shows with the Rookie and with Greys/Station 19.
Well they succeeded with Station 19. It not only regularly outrates Grey’s now, but it is now ABC’s highest rated drama.
I agree Rookie Feds can go. Who goes to work with “the girls” hanging out and always trying to act cupie doll like. When she acts serious it is watchable but other times it is cringy

I absolutely agree! They will cancel great shows like Big Sky and Alaska Daily and keep a lot of these reality shows like The Bachelor and Bachelor Paradise. American Idol is not good anymore I don’t like the format with double and triple eliminations and the seasons are shorter now. I love country music but American Idol has become more Nashville Star.
Outside of reducing cost getting actors to sign on for 2 less a season. What could be hold up, order 13, put on bench. I GUESS with writer strike you’ll need less inventory. But the season will probably start in Nov. And you in theory need 4 comedies.
The only other possibility is both are going hulu exclusive, but disney was trying to cut content their as well
“American Idol” needs a complete overhaul.
New judges who actually criticize contestants.
The “Idol” producers also need to be called out for their manipulations, with voting, varying levels of airtime depending who they want to promote, wild cards given to contestants who they want, not who is most deserving, and the dominance of country singers.

I like Rookie Feds…hope it’s going to stick around. Home Economics just isn’t funny. I gave it a try but don’t care for the cast and again…not funny. Sad that Big Sky was dropped last week…how about getting rid of American Idol and tacky game shows and Steve Harvey and keep the good stuff and here’s an idea…come up with real quality shows with substance and not stupid reality shows???
They definitely should have kept Big Sky, Alaska Daily and The Company You Keep. The game shows and American Idol can go though. I thought I was the only one who didn’t like Home Economics. I watched it for awhile and it’s just not funny to me. It’s not hilarious or memorable so I guess that means it’s getting 4th season and 5th and 6th season.

SO happy about Not Dead Yet; it’s not perfect, but that cast is special and it got so much better as it went along. Hoping to hear positive news about Home Economics too; most underrated sitcom on network TV at the moment.
So sad that ABC cancelled one the best shows on TV! Why they cancelled East New York is a mystery in itself! It’s one of the best cop shows on TV since NYPD Blue! Not to mention one of the best shows on Sunday night in years!! Too bad they wouldn’t cancel one of their dumb reality shows to give a real show a chance! BOO ABC!!
East New York is CBS and I love that show and the cast and the stories.
