Coming off The Assassination of Gianni Versace‘s success at numerous awards shows, the question is: Which American Crime Story will FX tell next?
“We have three or four ideas in active development [but] I couldn’t tell you which one is likely to be ready first,” FX Networks chief John Landgraf shared on Monday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena.
The long-ago planned exploration of tragic missteps made during Hurricane Katrina, however, is apparently a wash-out. “As far as I know, Katrina is not still in the mix,” Landgraf said.
But despite prolific producer Ryan Murphy’s megadeal over at Netflix, “There are many more cycles of American Crime Story to come,” Landgraf maintained. “And more cycles of American Horror Story, too” — though he declined to dish on the theme for the next season of the latter, which is renewed for at least two more seasons.
As for Murphy’s FEUD, which thus far has only tackled Bette Davis vs. Joan Crawford, “Right now, Ryan doesn’t have another idea,” Landgraf said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if I get a call about another cycle, but we don’t have one at the moment.”
Also up in the air for FX at this time is the next season of the acclaimed dramedy Atlanta. “Writers are back working now,” Landgraf said. But with “king of all media” Donald Glover dealing with matters both professional and personal, “One of the realities is you’ve gotta wait,” and some shows — also including FX’s Fargo (which won’t start filming Season 4 until next winter) and Taboo — simply won’t air new seasons on an annual basis.
“You have to make a decision about quality over quantity,” Landgraf said, before confirming that Atlanta Season 3 won’t premiere in time to be eligible for this year’s Emmys (meaning by May 31).

Ryan Murphy teased on IG last night there might be a Scream Queens revival. Would be epic!
ACS, Feud, Trust, Taboo, all these disappeared with no word of continuation/renewal/cancelation

Most of those are addressed in this very article.
Katrina is certainly a story worth telling, but I think it’s probably the right to nix it for American Crime Story. It doesn’t really satisfy the weird cultural fascination that we have for true crime (we can all explain to our therapists later just why watching a murder unfold is just so much more appealing). Maybe Katrina can be saved for American Bureaucratic Missteps Story.
For Feud I recommend The Shining one. Jack, Shelley and Stanley fighting is one for the ages. As for ACS: Jonbenet Ramsey, Casey Anthony, Ed Gein, etc.
I think R.M should definitely tell the Katrina story I’m sure there’s a lot material including those misteps.
I’m all for shows taking their time and not being pressured to stick to an annual schedule. They’ve been doing that in the UK forever, and it’s usually worth the wait. For instance, Fawlty Towers, a CLASSIC, had only 12 episodes, six were made in 1975 and the other six in 1979.
There is one downside to this: Make the wait between seasons too long (like a full year or two), and you risk fans getting angry. And then they are going to think a show had already been cancelled, so when the season finally does come, they end up missing out on said season by not watching it when it originally aired. For example, there was a six-year hiatus between seasons eight and nine of “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, and literally the entire run of “Grimm” aired during said hiatus.
Charles/Diana, Lupone/Lloyd-Webber, and even Woody Allen/Mia Farrow would be great ideas for a new Feud season, but after the lawsuit with Olivia de Havilland i bet it will never cover a living person, if the show ever comes back.
Feud–Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, and the election of 1912. Reading Doris Kearns Goodwin’s “The Bully Pulpit” and how those two former friends became political enemies, with a big juicy role for William Randolph Hearst (the original Citizen Kane) and yellow journalism. Ultimately led to the election of Woodrow Wilson, an intellectual idealist and low down racist.
IMDB page says Season 3 takes place in Delaware, NJ, and Philly.
