Bob Hearts Abishola‘s love story is winding down. CBS announced Wednesday that the Chuck Lorre comedy will end with Season 5.
Its 13-episode farewell run begins Monday, Feb. 12, while its series finale will air Monday, May 13 at 8:30/7:30c.
“We are so proud to call Bob Hearts Abishola a CBS comedy as it helped establish a new generation of programming at the network,” CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in a statement. “This series expertly showcased a family love story and workplace comedy about the immigrant experience with heartfelt humor and emotion while also authentically portraying Nigerian culture.
“It’s a testament to the incomparable Chuck Lorre, the amazing creative team led by Al Higgins, Gina Yashere and Matt Ross, and the talents of Billy Gardell, Folake Olowofoyeku and the entire cast for making this show and its characters come to life and resonate with viewers,” the statement continues. “We plan to celebrate it this spring and give fans the most amazing episodes to remember it by.”
Added Yashere, Ross and Lorre: “Bob Hearts Abishola is about an unlikely love story, but also the premise that immigrants make America great. We’ve loved bringing these stories to life and are excited for fans to see the final chapter of these two families, and the incredible work of this talented cast and crew.” (Yashere released an additional statement on Instagram, which you can read here.)
As previously reported, only Billy Gardell and Folake Olowofoyeku are returning to their titular roles as series regulars for a shortened, strike-delayed Season 5. The remainder of the ensemble — which consists of Christine Ebersole (as Dottie), Matt Jones (as Douglas), Maribeth Monroe (as Christina), Vernee Watson (as Gloria), Shola Adewusi (as Auntie Olu), Barry Shabaka Henley (as Uncle Tunde), Travis Wolfe Jr. (as Dele), Bayo Akinfemi (as Goodwin), Anthony Okungbowa (as Kofo), Saidah Arrika Ekulona (as Ebunoluwa) and series co-creator Yashere (as Kemi) — will appear on a recurring basis.
Shortly after the news broke, Gardell tweeted, “It’s been a great ride. Thanks to everyone who has watched us, let’s finish up strong!” Olowofoyeku also weighed in on Instagram, writing: “Through a pandemic… through a strike… we kept rolling! Oh, what a ride!! Season 5, our final season, is going to be EPIC!”
B❤️A started off as a love story about a middle-aged compression sock businessman (played by Mike & Molly vet Gardell) and his cardiac nurse (Olowofoyeku). The unlikely couple tied the knot at the beginning of Season 3. Over time, the series has blossomed into a true ensemble effort, which was only natural with a robust cast of 13 series regulars.
Abishola’s end date comes two weeks after CBS announced that fellow Lorre comedy Young Sheldon will end with Season 7. With both series ending, the sitcom titan is poised to head into the 2024-25 broadcast season without a show on CBS for the first time since Two and Half Men debuted in 2003.
Are you sad to hear that Bob Hearts Abishola is coming to an end? Sound off in Comments.
I hope the show ends with her pregnant — or better yet — a time jump showing them with a couple of kids
Why does CBS cancel all the good wholesome shows only my reality TV or game shows
Wow! I was really hoping this show would last much longer. I could see Dele going thru college and into marriage. And Abishola finishing her degree with Bob cheering her on. I will miss this show horribly. Thank you for the ride!!
Feel like I am losing half my shows this year
Not much of a surprise. Weaker ratings and with most of the supporting cast (who are the best part of this series, IMO) recurring in season 5, seemed obvious this would be the last season.
Love this show! Hate to see it go!
studios are cancelling shows to punish actors writers for going on strike
It does seem like they are quietly but openly taking the financial losses out on them. They aren’t saying anything publicly but dropping the hammer on a lot of shows. Some might be just business but it seems like they are trying to punish them for daring to stand up to the big studios, now wanting to show them who’s boss.
Why does CBS cancel all the good wholesome shows only to be replaced by reality TV or game shows
Not really. Both this show and YS were nearing their end of life before the strikes. The fact that almost the entire cast was gutted before the strike was a sign the show was in danger. And if memory serves me right, there was talk of YS ending with S7 last season.
There are definitely a few top rated shows where even pre-strike it felt as if the 23-24 season would be announced as a final one
This, Sheldon and Connors on abc where the three major ones that come to mind
We will likely get fewer scripted shows and more reality garbage. The strike “win” may result in fewer dollars for actors overall. More pay for those who get work, but not as many jobs available as before the strike.
Glad it’s ending while it’s still funny. I will miss these characters though. 🥹
Not surprising — it’s a good show that’s run its course. Bob and Abishola are in a stable, largely drama-free marriage (barring stupid plot twists), and the supporting characters won’t be around as much. Any more seasons, and it would start to seem like a documentary on sock manufacturing.
Sad to see it end
Yes I am sad that Bob ❤️Abishola is ending. It’s a funny and original show that I always enjoy.
Why are they ending? Love the cast especially Dottie. I will miss this show
I’ll miss the show. It could have had one or two more solid seasons, I thnk. But the writing was on the wall with the budget cuts, then the strike probably sealed its fate.
Another of my favorites biting the dust. CBS, what are you doing???? The show had at least a few more seasons. Maybe it was the bloated supporting cast, but if they’d narrowed the focus to the core family and the hospital it could have continued.
Something no one has pointed out yet: if CBS doesn’t pick up a Chuck Lorre sitcom for 2024-2025 season, it will be the first season since the 2002-03 season that CBS doesn’t have a Chuck Lorre sitcom on the lineup. Because right now, the two Chuck Lorre sitcoms currently on the lineup (Bob Hearts Abishola and Young Sheldon) are ending after this season and Chuck Lorre doesn’t have a new one lined up.
“Abishola’s end date comes two weeks after CBS announced that fellow Lorre comedy Young Sheldon will end with Season 7. With both series ending, the sitcom titan is poised to head into the 2024-25 broadcast season without a show on CBS for the first time since Two and Half Men debuted in 2003.”
Tell us you didn’t read the whole article without telling us you didn’t read the whole article.
Going to miss this show so much!!!
Man, this sux! CBS is annihilating half of my watch schedule! This is a FANTASTIC show with AWESOME actors who have lots more story to tell. I always look forward to Bob hearts Abishola and enjoy witty banter and family ties. I also enjoyed learning more about Nigeria. Please everyone, reconsider! Give us more seasons!!!
This is the only comedy I watch and I haven’t missed an episode. I will miss it.
I felt the end was near over the summer when it was announced that only Bob and Abishola were returning as series regulars for Season 5. I don’t see how the show will be enjoyable without the rest of the cast. My favorite we’re Olu, Kemi and Dele.
My family loves this show. Why do you always cancel shows people enjoy to watch. The young people are never home to watch TV. It is the older folks that are home watching TV and they are always canceling the ones that we love. We are the ones who watch the commercials also and buy the stuff that are in those adds. Give us a break!!!!!
Why are they taking off all this show I watch all the time take all games shows off and this stupid reality shows out
Game shows and reality shows are way cheaper than scripted shows. Also, scripted shows tend to get more expensive the longer it stays on the air, basically due to actors’ salaries. Increasing costs plus decreasing ratings make a show ripe for cancellation. A network gets more bang for their buck from a reality show that has similar ratings to a scripted one.
Extremely sad about this…besides Ghosts, I don’t think I watch anything else on CBS. And I just canceled Paramount+. after a month of not much of interest (besides old stuff) to stream.
Just become a gameshow and reality tv network.
Well, Boo. Or Poo about Bob♥️Abishola ending.
I liked him more when he was fat.
Me too. He just seems to be fading away. And if that happens, they could just call the show “Abishola”. Would save some money.
Yes, doesn’t it just suck to pieces that he wanted to get healthy, and be around longer for his family. That is just so selfish of him LOL.
Totally! LOL!
Thank you Penelope. He’s great either way, so why not ilve longer and feel well.
I will miss all of the cast a lot.
That’s a shame that was a good clean show made people laugh made people think
I LOVE Uncle Tunde. He and Aunty should get their own show!
I agree, but i would like to see Dottie on the show too. Her and Tunde were hilarious together.
Call me crazy, but when you throw 85% of your cast under the bus, can the remaining 15% be far behind?
Lorre does have a show on streaming (“Bookie”), so he’s hardly looking for work. Besides, he’s earned a little respite.
