Two of broadcast television’s biggest hits are guaranteed to return next season.
CBS on Tuesday handed early renewals to Thursday comedy Ghosts and Friday procedural Fire Country. The former will be entering its fourth season while the latter will be heading into its third. Exact episode orders for each were not disclosed.
Ghosts this season is averaging 8.7 million total viewers and a 0.8 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), ranking No. 2 in audience among all TV comedies (trailing only lead-in Young Sheldon) and tying Sheldon for the top spot in the demo. Compared to its sophomore averages (9.1 mil/0.9), the hitcom is down just a tick.
Fire Country Season 2 is thus far averaging 7.6 million total viewers and a 0.7 demo rating, also down just a bit from its previous averages (8.4 mil/0.8). Among all broadcast dramas airing this TV season, it ranks No. 2 in the demo (trailing only Tracker‘s Super Bowl-inflated tally).
The Fire Country pickup comes as CBS readies the potential spinoff Sheriff Country, starring Gotham and Homeland vet Morena Baccarin.
“Ghosts and Fire Country are proven viewer favorites on both broadcast and streaming thanks to exceptional storytelling, talented actors and an ever-growing fan base,” said CBS president Amy Reisenbach in a statement. “We are elated to keep the momentum going and bring them back to CBS next season.”
Last week, CBS also issued an early renewal to the new Justin Hartley drama Tracker.
As awesome as this renewal news is, boy, the US version of Ghosts‘s syndication prospects have been really hurt by the COVID Pandemic (which had affected its first year) and last year’s “Strikemageddon” (which had affected its current third season). It will have only 65 to 70 episodes (depending on the potential outcome of any IATSE strike this year) at the end of its fourth season. Curse the need to reach the hard minimum of 80 episodes so a popular show can launch in broadcast syndication as soon as possible.
Im really happy about the renewal news for Ghosts <3
CBS wants to create its own universe like Chicago in California with Fire and Sheriff Country, so it’s just missing Hospital Country…
CBS needs to revisit its rudiculous decision to cancel Blue Bloods.
Fire Country is just getting back on and now it is off for 3 weeks.
WHY??
This on and then gone for shows does not help the ratings.
