Chicago P.D. Boss Gives an Update on Burgess and Ruzek’s Wedding — Will It Happen in Season 12?
Will there be a Burgess and Ruzek wedding in Chicago P.D. Season 12?
That’s the question on many minds since their low-key engagement during the early part of Season 11. With the writers’ room assembling this week, showrunner Gwen Sigan is just as thrilled as you are to finally delve into the couple’s upcoming nuptials.
“I’m very excited to get into it,” the EP tells TVLine. “So few times on this show do you get these really happy moments.”
The cop procedural leans into the darkest aspects of the genre as Intelligence takes on the worst of the worst, leaving little room for joyous occasions.
“I think it’ll be fun [to write],” Sigan adds. “There’s definitely a possibility of, ‘Are we going to do the wedding next year? Are we going to do the planning? What are we going to see?’ So, I’m excited to figure out all of that.”
Another thing to consider is the scale of the ceremony. Will they go all out with a big celebration or keep things small and private like their bedroom engagement? As many recall of the moment in Season 11, Episode 3, Ruzek casually pulled the ring from his nightstand and said with an open palm, “Let’s make this forever.” Burgess then quipped, “Third time’s a charm.” (Read our full recap here.)
“Their proposal was so them,” the Chicago P.D. boss shares. “They’ve been through so much and they have grown so much that it was just this very honest, small, intimate moment between the two of them.”
Naturally, Sigan imagines their wedding to be a bit like that.
“But then I also think about Makayla and that she’s going to be a part of all those conversations and wanting to be a part of [the ceremony],” she notes. “And Ruzek has this big family and all these friends… Is he going to want to do the whole thing? You could see them go either way. There’s probably a good middle ground there.”

I actually hope not. Main character marriages in the Chicagoverse are pretty much doomed.
Not all are doomed. There’s Boden and Donna. Herrmann and Cindy. Trudy and Mouch. Just cause a handful of One Chicago marriages didn’t last doesn’t mean Ruzek and Kim’s can’t be the success story.
True, but those examples you mentioned don’t involve series regulars on the same show.

I learned a long time ago to never trust anything from Sigan. She claimed to at some point promote Burgess, Atwater, and Ruzek to detectives and that has been a pie crust promise. As someone with friends and family in law enforcement it’s an insult to see that they are still ‘officers’. I know it’s a show but anyone who investigates would officially be a detective.
I e been wondering why they’re not detectives. At least one (though preferably all three) is gonna need to be promoted soon, seeing as with Upton gone, Intelligence has no detectives. Unless Petrovic is joining? Though I don’t know how I feel about that.

They should all be detectives but there are some storyline reasons why Atwater and Ruzek aren’t, even though the show never mentioned them. Voight was able to make the charges against Ruzek disappear at the beginning of Season 7. It’s not too hard to imagine that “the Ivory Tower” that hates Voight would see Ruzek as “Voight’s boy” and get in the way of a promotion for him. Atwater ticked off the thin blue line at the end of Season 7 and it’s not too hard to imagine that there are still people in prominent positions in CPD that would hold it against him. Of course, this is all unsaid by the show, but I could see why Ruzek and Atwater would have some issues. Burgess has none of these issues, other than simply working for Voight. I would think that being seriously wounded twice would override any anti-Voight bias. There is no excuse for Burgess to not be a detective. Frankly all 3 should have been made detectives before Season 7 considering that they were talking about Atwater becoming a detective in Season 5.
O am over the moon that they are finally getting married. This is the right thing at the right time. I just can’t wait for the nuptials happen.

No kim and Adam weeding, their history is full of up and downs and not good for Mac. Keep them separate but in relationships with others.

Yes, cant wait …. l love this couple. Burgess is a go getter. Love her… what can l say, most all of their guys r hmmmm good looking and hot. Adam is a bad boy look, love it.as well as his ride along. Sorry, short term memory. He takes such good care of his mother, such a hunk. These two guys r my fav’s with the exeception of Voight. He is a great leader. For sure hope Voight, Adam, and his partner, Kevin and Burgess never leave the show. I do not miss an episode, l love Chicago PD.

Ironically she was part of the production team since season 1 she was a junior writer or something back then. You think someone whose been on a show since day one would know more about continuity.

I definitely want to see a big wedding. A big happy occasion. The show does delve into many dark places so it d be a change to see something wonderful and happy.
