Doctor Who‘s upcoming season is timey-wimey in the very best ways, visiting the groovy ’60s, Regency-era England and other destinations ripe for fabulous wardrobe changes, as seen in the brand-new trailer above.
The adventures of the Fifteenth Doctor (played by Ncuti Gatwa) and his companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) will begin streaming Friday, May 10 at 7 pm EDT — on Disney+ in the U.S. and internationally (excluding the UK). In the UK, the season will kick off Saturday, May 11 at 12 am GMT (on BBC iPlayer, followed by BBC One later that day).
Season 14 will open with not one but two new episodes; the season will then continue with a new episode released Stateside every Friday. (In the UK, episodes will drop on Saturday.)
The trailer above reveals (among many other things) a first look at Game of Thrones vet Indira Varma’s Duchess and a character played by Callie Cooke (Henpocalypse!). It also teases the universe-threatening crisis that the Doctor must somehow help avert.
In addition to Varma and Cookie, the Season 14 guest cast includes Aneurin Barnard (Barkskins) as “Roger ap Gwilliam,” Anita Dobson (back as Mrs. Flood), Yasmin Finney (Heartstoppers) back as Rose Noble, Michelle Greenidge (Code 404) and Angela Wynter (EastEnders) back as Carla and Cherry Sunday, Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter) in an undisclosed role, Bonnie Langford (EastEnders) back as Melanie Bush, Genesis Lynea (Casualty) in an undisclosed role, Jemma Redgrave back as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Lenny Rush (Dodger) as “Morris.”
Looking ahead to Season 15, it was reported in January (and documented by leaked pap pics) that Gibson’s run as companion lasted only a season, after which she was replaced with Andor‘s Varada Sethu.

So much for the BBC keeping the Saturday Premier slot for the UK with others following.
With the time difference the shows will stream on Disney + and BBC iPlayer at the same time. The US gets it at a more convenient time, 7 PM as opposed to midnight in the UK. It is linear (broadcast) TV in the UK that gets the shows later on Saturday. The US does not get the show on broadcast or cable at all. So you are correct that the UK is not getting the show first, but it is also not getting the show after the rest of the world. We can speculate why this was done from preventing spoilers from the UK to the rest of the world to Disney insisting no one get the shows ahead of their subscribers. Whatever the reason everyone gets to stream the shows at the same time.
Time zones are fun.
Cannot WAIT for this! It’s going to be so much fun.
I’m here for ir! Love this new incarnation.
Although it’ll take time for me to get used to watching Doctor Who on Friday nights. It’s been my Saturday/Sunday afternoon tradition for YEARS.
You know you can just wait a day to watch it like me 😜
My Mom & I will watch it on Disney +.
Can’t wait.
Looking forward to it.
Excited to hear about all of the returning characters. I was definitely left wanting to know more about them – especially Rose Noble and the strangely knowledgeable Mrs. Flood.
I wish it was available on BBC America, even a day later, for the folks who don’t subscribe to every damn streaming service there is. :(
So part of that deal bbc made was that USA gets it first and it premieres to UK viewers….on iPlayer? BBC have lost their minds here.
Doctor Who was the prime time weekend family show in the UK since its inception and for them to throw that away seems misguided at best. This is either showing how much they needed Disney money, an acceptance of terrestrial tv dying off, or both.
They’ll get heat for this, no doubt.
The BBC premieres a lot of their scripted shows on iPlayer first and has been doing so for a few years; it’s Doctor Who’s turn now. As a U.S. viewer, I’m ok with it
Not even British and this is dumb. Why would people in the uk have to wait to watch a British series before other ppl
not the first time- ‘granchester’ out last year on US tv before it aired in the UK this year
I’m certain that that’s the same time because the UK is 5 hours ahead of EDT so 7pm there is 12pm here in the UK.
This. TV Line is overstating the problem here. It premieres at exactly the same time in both countries. The only real issue is that the broadcast premiere takes a back seat to streaming.
Wonder what the ratings will be.
We’ll never know stateside, unfortunately, unless it’s astronomical and then Disney might tell us.
It would be 12am UK time (once they go to BST at the end of the month)
Technically this is season 1 as this is officially a new series. The BBC lists the series from Eccleston to Whittaker separate from the series starting with Gatwa.

This is Season 14 of Modern Who. But this will feel like the first season of a brand-new show to people who are watching “Doctor Who” for the first time. “Doctor Who” has always been able to successfully reinvent itself every three or four years. That’s the beauty of the show & why it has survived for so long.
No. It will be listed as Season One on Disney+.
how is it bad news that it premiered in the UK at basically the same time because of timezone differences?
Because it premiers at midnight in the UK so basically UK viewers will see it after US viewers. So a slap in the face for us. Why can’t it arrive at 6pm UK and 1pm EST, which would be a lot fairer. Typical that again the US viewers get preference even though it is a BBC made show and a British institution.
Interesting to see Indira Varma return to the Whoniverse – I wonder if her character “the Duchess” will be connected to Suzie Costello, the character she played in the first episode of the Torchwood spinoff series? After all, Torchwood’s Gwen Cooper, played by Eve Myles, wound up having some unspecified familial tie to Gwyneth the maid, which she had previously played in the third episode (The Unquiet Dead) of the first season/series of the RTD Doctor Who reboot in 2005.
Never been more ambitious and brave Waiting eagerly to watch this..
Can’t wait.
Technically it’s season one.
I hope to see Billie Piper back as Rose for this one. I suspect she and the Meta-Crisis Doctor are Ruby’s parents.
What happened to Jonah Hauer-King appearing on the show?
