Peacock has chopped Bryan Fuller‘s name from the credits of its upcoming Friday the 13th series: The Hannibal veteran has stepped down as showrunner.
“For reasons beyond our control, [production company] A24 has elected to go a different way with the material,” Fuller revealed on social media. “We hope the final product will be something Friday the 13th fans all over the world will enjoy.” (Our sister site Variety was the first to report the news.)
The show, previously titled Crystal Lake and ordered to series in October 2022, is billed as an “expanded prequel” to the long-running horror film franchise with hockey mask-wearing killer Jason Voorhees at its center. Fuller was set to write and executive-produce the prequel, also serving as showrunner.
Adrienne King, who starred in the first two Friday the 13th films, revealed in March 2023 that she and Fuller “had another exciting meeting filling me in on what’s in store for us at Camp Blood! Always a joy & can’t wait until I’m able [to] share some details!” She indicated at the time that the series would debut this year on Peacock, but that now looks unlikely; no casting or shooting has taken place yet. According to Variety, “the series order remains in place with hopes to line up a new showrunner as soon as possible.”
The original Friday the 13th film, with counselors being murdered at a summer camp, was released in 1980 and become a box-office hit, spawning a franchise that includes nine sequels, a Nightmare on Elm Street crossover Freddy vs. Jason and a 2009 big-screen reboot. A previous TV adaptation, Friday the 13th: The Series, ran in first-run syndication from 1987 to 1990. The CW also developed an hour-long series based on the franchise, but it never made it past the pilot stage.
I mean I’m gonna watch cause anything Bryan does is gold but how is this gonna work?
Was there a killer before Mrs. Voorhees?
It will probably show the camp pre-murders and when Jason was alive. Then show him drown to death. Maybe show him as a kid version of himself emerging from the water and killing some of his bullies. Maybe his mom even sees it and is first repulsed then decides murdering is a solution and goes after the counselors. There’s a lot they can do. I think it is a 3 season show at best that they will drag out for 5 or 6 years if it is successful.
Some people are speculating that each season will be a remake of the corresponding number movie. This is based on the fact that the showrunner said that they can use everything in the movies and if they get to season 10 then Jason is going to space. Jason x was the 10th movie.
You’re gonna watch because anything Bryan does is gold – but the article you just commented on is about Bryan stepping down from the show.
Big Mike, here you are commenting to someone as if they’re not paying attention, while not realizing that you responded to a comment from two and a half years ago :)
Not that I blame you, considering that they chose to update an old article instead of just making a new one.
Thanks, I was SO confused. Never seen them do that before. Strange.
Friday the 13th: The Series had nothing to do with the movies and Jason was not the one terrorizing people in the first movie.
That’s what I was gonna say. I really liked Friday the 13th: The Series! Anyone know where it’s available?
Jason is a crap horror character!
are you effing stoned ?
Jason Voorhees is one of the greatest horror icons in history. What the F is wrong with you people ?
how so?
So this prequel is about Mrs. V and a pre-teen Jason? Or about other stuff that took place at the camp before them?
Two months later: “Bryan Fuller leaves Friday the 13th Prequel due to Creative Differences”
I mean, the guy is a genius, but he’s the most successful person to never hold a job for very long.
I kid… sort of lol
This
I was gonna say the same thing lol. I love Bryan Fuller’s work. But either his shows get canceled prematurely (Pushing Daisies, Hannibal, etc), or he jumps ship after a season or two (American Gods).
He was fired from American Gods because he asked the budget like GOT and Stars wanted to save money.
So basically Bates Motel with Pamela Voorhees, instead of Norma…
How long till Bryan fuller drops the project and moves on like pretty much everything else he’s been announced for?
This article is about him stepping down. What are you talking about?
TVLine seems to have used an old article (from 2022) announcing the show and the rewritten it about him stepping down. Then they have just updated the published date to today but its left all the comments, many predicting that Fuller would quit (which tbh is a pretty easy guess, either he gets really unlucky with clueless execs or he is a nightmare to work with to a point the studio forces him out)
Yes, unfortunately TVLine does that a lot and it gets very confusing sometimes.
I like A24, but Jason has never been as interesting as other movie villains like Freddy and Pinhead. So will the series will be about young Jason and his mother? Will it be taking place in the 1950’s? I’m going to need some more details on this.
Make one of camp councilors Freddy.
I can’t imagine how this will work. We already know the backstory. So what is there to tell us?
This could be interesting. Delve into not only Pamela, Jason, the camp counselors, but also the surrounding area. There were some brilliant comics that went into the history of Crystal Lake. Explore that. The supernatural elements, maybe. Let us know what happened to Jason after he died the first time.
I kind think they could do a chain events that could set Pamela off. I mean the camp could be found not at fault legally. Plus her crappy husband. Just a slow slide into madness.
A24 is involved in the show?? Color me intrigued
Does anyone have an idea of when we might get to see this?
U didn’t read the article huh?
Most of the comments are from 2022 or 2023 This article is an update to a much older article it seems.
You didn’t see that SunRay made his or her post almost a year ago huh?
Didn’t read that date but the date on article said today, I went by that huh? MAY 8, 2024
Look at the date of their comment. It’s a year before this article existed.
The other comments are even six months older than the comment you replied to. Looks like tvline recycled an old article about the show, rather than publishing a whole new one.
I’m thinking Fuller wanted to go in more mature direction and a24 wanted a tween show, don’t blame him for leaving.
Fuller departed his last four series, one after the Season 2 and three other shows (including this) before they even made it to air.
At a certain point, the “creative differences” excuse can only go so far.
Why does anyone work with him anymore. Yes he is a creative force, but apparently the second he gets told NO, he throws a hissy fit and takes his ball and goes home. I used to defend him, but now what is the point? We ALL know how this will play out.
Because when things do work out, he creates some of the best television that exists. He’s worth the drama.
So… Star Trek: Discovery all over again?
I like Bryan Fuller’s stuff (that he’s actually gotten made) but does he just go around getting people excited about stuff only to piss in their Cheerios and get fired?
Bryan Fuller walks away from a project? Shocked am I! Shocked!
Since it’s a prequel, will we get a voice over ever week from Jason? (ala Young Sheldon)
I say, cast Vera Farminga, Melissa Leo or Dale Dickey as Mrs Vorhees. I would def. watch that!
WHAT IS IT WITH BRYAN FULLER???
This has happened with nearly every show he’s involved in……
I love so much of what he HAS been involved with but either the companies that work with him don’t appreciate his creative content OR his working style isn’t a good fit, or something. Once or twice is an anomaly but, how many times can it happen?
(And he’s insanely creative – I wish there was a better match for his talents….)
