Good Omens Shake-Up: Co-Showrunner Out Ahead of Likely Final Season
Prime Video‘s Good Omens may very well return for Season 3, and if it does, it’ll be short one showrunner.
Douglas Mackinnon, who served as executive producer, director and co-showrunner on the first two seasons of Neil Gaiman’s fantasy comedy, confirmed his exit on Instagram in the comments of a photo taken from the set. When fans guessed that the pic was from Good Omens, he replied, “I’m not involved with this show anymore.”
Mackinnon’s statement stirred up a big reaction, leading one fan to ask series creator Gaiman about the director’s status. “Douglas has moved on to other projects,” Gaiman said on his Bluesky page.
While nothing’s in stone as of yet, Deadline reports that a renewal for a third and final season is “looking good,” with options on the series’ main cast (led by Michael Sheen and David Tennant) having already been picked up.
In August, Gaiman wrote on X (fka Twitter) that a third season of Omens was on his list of to-dos. “It’s planned and plotted and if there wasn’t a Writers Strike on I’d be writing it right now,” he said.
The writer also indicated that Season 3 would draw from his and co-writer Terry Pratchett’s unfinished sequel to their original book.
In the Season 2 finale, the angel Aziraphale (played by Michael Sheen) and the demon Crowley (David Tennant) reached a new level in their millennia-long relationship when they kissed just moments before the final credits. Around that time, Tennant told TVLine that the major moment at the end of the episode — as well as Aziraphale’s learning that he’ll be deeply involved in the second coming of Christ, “doesn’t finish the story.” Sheen added: “It’s the start of another story.”
The cliffhanger at the end of Episode 6 certainly set the series up for another season (and Gaiman himself had voiced his support for an eventual happy ending). Sheen noted that Gaiman and Pratchett long ago came up with many ideas for how the otherworldly pair’s story could continue beyond the events of the book, and even at the end of Season 2, “we have not reached the end of those ideas.” (Watch Tennant and Sheen’s video interview here.)
