Brenda Leigh Johnson would be the very first to say, “Thank you, so much,” to Peacock for being the new home for all seven seasons of The Closer — beginning this Sunday, June 30, for Premium subscribers only.
The Closer, starring Kyra Sedgwick as the aforementioned Deputy Chief in charge of the LAPD’s Priority Homicide Division, originally aired on TNT each summer from June 2005 through August 2012. One day after its series finale, the offshoot Major Crimes, headed by Mary McDonnell (as Captain Sharon Raydor), premiered on TNT (and ran for six seasons of its own).
Sedgwick’s Brenda — oft likened to an American take on Helen Mirren’s Jane Tennison of Prime Suspect — was a CIA-trained detective brought from Atlanta to Los Angeles to head up a unit of the LAPD that handles sensitive, high-profile murder cases. A world-class interrogator (and tough-minded Southern woman), Brenda had a knack for obtaining confessions, ergo the series’ title.
The Closer‘s cast over its seven-season run included JK Simmons as Will Pope, Corey Reynolds as Sgt. David Gabriel, Robert Gossett as Capt. Russell Taylor, G.W. Bailey as Det. Louie Provenza, Anthony Denison as Det. Andy Flynn, Jon Tenney as FBI liaison Fritz Howard, Michael Paul Chan as Det. Michael Tao, Raymond Cruz as Det. Julio Sanchez, Gina Ravera as Det. Irene Daniels, Phillip P. Keene as Buzz Watson, and McDonnell as Raydor.
Among The Closer‘s accolades, Sedgwick was Emmy-nominated a total of five times, grabbing gold for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama in 2012; she also earned one Golden Globe across six total nods. At the SAG Awards, the series’ cast was nominated five times for best ensemble, while Sedgwick collected seven nods for female actor in a drama.
The Closer was created by showrunner James Duff, Michael M. Robin and Greer Shephard.
What was its previous streaming situation?
Piecemeal as of late. Two seasons on TNT.com, episodes for rent/purchase here and there…. The news here is all 7 seasons in one handy place. Enjoy!
So where will it stream in Canada?
This is a US only licensing deal , Warner Bros Discovery have licensed it to Peacock
I think it was previously on Max/HBO Max at some stage,
All seasons were on HBO before the merger with Warner Brothers.
I think it was on HBO Max until May 2023 , it was a merger with Discovery
It was also streaming on HBO Max for a while.
Not streaming, but The Closer has been on the broadcast network Start TV for several years now. It must do very well because the series is a constant presence.
Lifetime does sometimes broadcast episodes of “The Closer” as well (“Major Crimes” is also broadcast on Lifetime’s weekday schedule).
Such a great show… Still miss it.
Finally!
I missed Gina Ravera. I was bummed about how they treated her character. They let her go because she wanted more depth to character and they wanted to keep her wooden.
It’s strange to see Corey Reynolds as the super-weird sheriff in “Resident Alien” and realize he’s the same actor who played a serious young LAPD officer on “The Closer.”
Is it with ads or Premium and will Major Crimes be added as well?
Premium.
Nobody knows.
