Jared Padalecki may soon trade in his fire jacket for a lab coat.
The Supernatural alum is re-teaming with Walker showrunner Anna Fricke on an as-yet-untitled medical drama in the works at CBS, TVLine has confirmed.
The prospective procedural would center on a “devoted country doctor (played by Padalecki) who practices his unique style of improvisational medicine alongside his new protégé, a young doctor running from her past, as they operate a mobile clinic and heal the bodies and souls of their underserved community in the medical desert of rural Texas,” according to the official logline.
The development news follows Padalecki’s three-episode arc on CBS’ Fire Country, on which he was introduced as SoCal firefighter Camden Casey. His character may still resurface as the lead of a new Fire Country offshoot, reportedly dubbed Fire Country: Surfside, with Deadline noting that any such series would not move forward before the debut of the Morena Baccarin-led Sheriff Country spinoff, which is on tap for the 2025-26 TV season.
Padalecki was first known to TV audiences as Dean Forester, Rory’s on-again/off-again boyfriend on The WB’s Gilmore Girls. That was followed by his breakout role as Sam Winchester on the long-running CW drama Supernatural, which wrapped its 15-season run in 2020. Just two months later, he resurfaced as Texas ranger Cordwell on The CW’s Walker, which was cancelled after four seasons in May.
Would you scrub in and watch Jared Padalecki lead a CBS medical drama? Sound off in Comments.
I’d back him on a Fire Country spinoff, but I just don’t see him playing a doctor.
Yes indeed I would like to see that show
Sounds interesting! I like Jared Padalecki anyway but a medical drama sounds interesting. Although, I still think the CW cancelling “Walker” was a stupid decision. I don’t even watch that network anymore … once Superman and Lois signed off, that was the last of the series to watch there. So, I’m glad to see CBS could possibly the next home for Jared. I wish CBS would have picked up “Walker” but I’ll take a medical drama, too.
Yeah, Walker easily could have be a CBS Friday night show.
Walker was a CBS production
Well, a CBS *Studios* production.
Being a medical person myself, this drama sounds intriguing. I still want to see Jared in the Fire Country spinoff but I know that’s not coming for a while. I know how talented Jared is so I’m very sure this new project will be great!
The series seems to be one that was written for him.
A series that takes place in Texas, which allows him to go home at night and see his children
And Jared could use his brother Jeff (a highly regarding orthopedic surgeon) as a technical advisor. It’s a win for everyone.
Doctor Padalecki, Medicine Man… or maybe Doctor Country…sounds like a CBS Friday show with Fire Country and Sheriff Country.
Dr. Sexy M.D.
Yes! Hopefully he will be Doctor Moose who wears cowboy boots. So happy for this reference.
I’d watch anything Jared is in! I’m excited for this one. Hopefully we’ll get both series. I want to get to know Camden Casey more, too.

Tired of medical drama shows. There’s too many out now.
You know what’s really cool? You don’t have to watch any of them.
You know what’s really cool? Being open minded enough to see things from someone else’s perspective.
I’m sure that he isn’t oblivious to what you said, but it isn’t unfair for him to(assuming that the following is his stance) wish that there was more of a scripted variety on network tv options to choose from than the many medical and crime solving procedural shows. Perhaps he doesn’t have as many streaming services as some of us do, which of course offers even more of a variety. Perhaps something else.
You know what’s really *not* cool. You lecturing someone else in response to their totally accurate statement.
Their completely valid point stands:
If people don’t like certain TV shows for whatever reason(s), *they simply don’t have to watch them*.
As much as I love them, I agree. I think there are at least six on the air right now.
There’s never enough medical drama shows for me. Too many police procedurals for me.
Didn’t changing channels make fun of such shows? Now he’s doing them. Guess we all need a paycheck.
Sounds AMAZING! (Both of the show ideas, really. But I do love a good doctor show!)
Definitely, he’s a great Actor
? I don’t get his appeal as a man or as an actor. But hey that’s just me.
This! +1000
You literally have no eyes.
This is the only possible explanation for your statement.
I wouldn’t watch him in anything by choice, he’s a terrible actor and ruins any scene he’s in, I cant imagine him as a doctor any more than he fit the role of a firefighter.
He lives in Texas and has been pretty clear that he would rather work there so this isn’t a surprise.
So true! What is a surprise is that a network studio is willing to work with him to film in Texas. Not many actors can convince a studio to film in their home state.
I would definitely watch that.
Definitely watch in medical drama! Loved him in all his shows and this will add another dimension to his portfolio. I can see him as a compassionate country doctor. Go Sammy! 😍
Listen I just want to him back on my screens permanently! This show almost sounds Royal Pains esque but instead of having elite rich clients in the Hamptons him and another female medical professional are helping people in an underserved community.
“Would you scrub in and watch Jared Padalecki lead a CBS medical drama?” HECK YEAH!! I would also love to see him more as Casey in the Fire Country Spin Off as well.
Jareds brother and cousin are both doctors and he was going to go to college to be an engineer or doctor and later down the road thought maybe a teacher had he not made it big. He’s a very intelligent man that I have evey confidence in. With a curiosity and thirst for research, I know he will pull this off.
Yeah, I know.
Of course I will see anything with Jared in it
Yes I would. I will watch anything he is in.
He is a fantastic actor and human being
With Sheriff County next year and this new Padalecki drama in 2 years’ time, which existing CBS dramas will be cancelled?
NCIS has its hands raised, sadly.
You know that CBS would cancel So Help Me Todd for a second time if they somehow could.
NCIS: Origins is the first in line. SWAT and The Equalizer might be right behind it.
NCIS still does decent ratings while faring OK on Paramount+. Meanwhile, Origins is struggling on CBS and doesn’t dry flies on Paramount+.
I’d absolutely watch anything Jared was in! Miss not seeing him weekly on TV.
Jared Padalecki as a doctor yes I would definitely watch this! Jared is a great actor and I will watch anything he is in. I am still hoping for Walker and Walker Independence to be brought back and Jared to lead a Fire Country spin off but in the meantime I am excited to see him play a doctor in a CBS medical drama.
Nope. Hopefully he doesn’t come back to Fire Country either.
He is the new David Boreanaz! Never without a goid show!
David Boreanaz was literally starring on a TV show in a leading role continuously from Buffy all the way through to when SEAL Team just ended. A streak of 27 consecutive years on primetime TV. Even the greats like Carroll O’Connor never had such an achievement.
I like Jared Padalecki a lot and Supernatural is one of my top 5 greatest TV shows of all time. But let’s not exaggerate here. He’s nowhere near the level of David Boreanaz.
Intriguing
Jared’s role on Walker was Cordell, not “Cordwell.” I would certainly tune in to any show that he was in. He is a great actor and also really nice to look at. <3
im srry but hes a terrible actor
He’s so “terrible” he’s been a lead for 25 years, right??
