Donald Glover‘s long-gestating Lando Calrissian TV series is undergoing its most dramatic change yet — it’s now a movie.
Stephen Glover, who was recently tapped to co-write the Star Wars offshoot with brother Donald (replacing Justin Simien), confirmed on the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast (per our sister pub Variety) that Lando is “not even a show,” adding, “The idea right now is to do a movie.”
Lando was first announced at Disney’s Investor Day in December 2020, as a prequel “event series” centered on the iconic con artist (played by Billy Dee Williams in two-third of the original Star Wars trilogy and then by Donald Glover in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story).
Little is known about Lando‘s plot, its place in the Star Wars timeline, or who will play the iconic character — though Donald Glover’s involvement as a writer would seem to cement his status as the series’ star. Previously, Glover appeared to confirm his involvement during a March 2022 visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live.
“Am I [working on the series]?” he responded to Kimmel’s question with a grin. “No, yeah, I have a lot of things [going on]…. I have like a ton of stuff I’ve been working on.”
Then, in April of 2023, Glover said, “We’re talking about it,” before adding, “That’s as much as I can say without Kathleen Kennedy hunting me down.”
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy herself has hedged when asked about Glover reprising his role as the galaxy’s favorite scoundrel.
“You need to ask Donald,” Kennedy told CinemaBlend at Star Wars Celebration 2022. “He’s the one that holds all the cards here.”
Can’t wait to watch it. Does ir come out before or after the Rian Johnson trilogy? Or the David Benioff and D.B. Weiss trilogy? Or Patty Jenkins’s Rogue Squadron? Or Kevin Feigi’s film? Taika Waititi’s? Shawn Levy’s? J.D. Dillard’s? Josh Trank’s?
Whatever it ends up being, I will show up for it
#SixEpisodesIntoAMovie!
By the way, still salty about Troy and Britta not being together longer! They made for a good couple! And yes, I’m a firm believer that Jeff Winger and Annie Edison are the Community OTP!
Troy and Britta made for a terrible couple. I wish Community explored Troy and Annie more.
Zero seasons and a movie!
Not every STAR WARS character needs a solo movie or series. Not everything that happens in a character’s backstory needs to be seen. Fans didn’t NEED to see how Han won the Falcon from Lando, it was covered just fine in a couple of lines of dialogue, and what was eventually shown was likely inferior to how most of us had imagined it from the dialogue. Not everything needs to be expanded into two hours or more. And prequels to what we’ve already seen with a character just keep the story stuck in neutral, because there’s little in the way of dramatic tension. Nothing against Donald Glover at all, he’s great, and he was great as young Lando in SOLO…but do we really NEED to see more of his exploits prior to EMPIRE? Why does Disney insist on doing donuts in the history of STAR WARS, instead of moving forward?
Tv show or movie. If and when it will be finally finished I’ll watch it
when are they going to learn. stop with that prequel stuff about various legacy characters or new characters in the established past of the timeline no one ever heard about before and who do not play any role in the established future nobody wants to see this except a handful of hardcore fanatics who would watch a blank screen with the words star wars written across it the box office bomb Solo and the the rating disasters of every Star Wars tv series should be proof enough its time to leave the time period between ep.1 and ep. 9 and the characters from ep.1 to ep.6 (no lando no darth sidious no greedo no jabba etc stories) alone and move forward with Rey or go back to the origins of jedi and sith the sith wars
I will watch it as i watch all Star Wars shows. However never been keen on prequels of any kind. Expecting this to be on par with solo. Which means neither going to be good or bad IMO. However, Don glover is very watchable, so lets hope the scrip is as least on par with solo or better. Better would be best outcome, just not expecting it.
