THE PERFORMER | Lecy Goranson
THE EPISODE | Miracles (Nov. 20, 2018)
THE PERFORMANCE | If you’re still searching for a silver lining in the untimely death of Roseanne Conner, look no further than the refreshing new life it has breathed into her daughter Becky — by way of underrated portrayer Goranson — on The Conners.
The Becky in The Conners is louder, brasher and more manic, but she’s also more insecure, vulnerable and grounded. That’s partly because, with Roseanne gone, the writers have more time to explore what’s behind the character’s basket-case tendencies (see: the ongoing arc involving Becky’s drinking). But credit must also go to Goranson, who has responded to the meatier material with some of the most comically confident and emotionally nuanced work of her career.
The new and improved Becky received a primo showcase in this week’s fifth episode, which found the eldest Conner reeling from the discovery that she is, against all medical odds, pregnant. With Becky’s emotions all over the map — particularly in the sequence in which she announced the news to her supportive-but-skeptical family — Goranson had to convey elation, fear, anger, and desperation all in the span of minutes while also being funny. And Goranson nailed every beat of the mental rollercoaster.
The end of “Miracles” hinted that Becky might choose to give her future child up for adoption, a decision that will likely call on the actress to dig deeper into her alter ego’s psyche. But judging by her revelatory work in the first half of The Conners‘ very promising inaugural season, we have little doubt Goranson will deliver.
HONORABLE MENTION | With only a handful of acting credits to her name, Florence Pugh got thrown into the deep end with AMC’s coolly cerebral thriller The Little Drummer Girl, starring alongside award winners Alexander Skarsgard and Michael Shannon. But Pugh not only held her own against her seasoned co-stars, she stole every last scene from them with a commanding, impressively tough-edged performance. Pugh played Charlie, a rebellious stage actress who gets recruited to join a tangled spy mission, and if she were anything less than convincing, the intricately woven story would fall to pieces. But she is convincing, with Charlie using her natural charms to get exactly what she wants, even when she’s caught up in a deadly spy game that spans decades and continents. Like its predecessor The Night Manager, The Little Drummer Girl is a visual feast of international intrigue — and it gives Pugh, just like it does Charlie, the role of her young life.
HONORABLE MENTION | Hen’s first captain may have doubted her ability to carry a fellow firefighter in a crisis situation, but we had no doubt that Aisha Hinds could carry Monday’s episode of 9-1-1, an unforgettable origin story that shed new light the challenges Hinds’ character faced as a black lesbian struggling to be respected by small-minded white men at the start of her firefighting career. From her more explosive moments, like the devastating speech (“See me!”) that she delivered to the other firefighters, to her quieter moments, like her heartwarming discovery that she had more friends at work than she realized, Hinds reminded the show’s viewers just how powerful — not to mention versatile — a performer she can be.

I don’t watch The Conners but good for Lecy.
You should give it a shot. It’s reliably laugh-out-loud funny. Acting is outstanding. They’re doing a really nice job of navigating the show without Roseanne. There’s only been one real “dud” of an episode so far for me (the Halloween episode; but I’m not a fan of holiday/theme episodes anyway). Definitely worth giving it a try. I’m sure it’s on Hulu or ABC on demand or something.
When I was a teenager watching Roseanne I loved Darlene and was never interested in Becky but I feel the exact opposite watching the new episodes now. Darlene is like watching paint dry and Becky is a hoot.
Exactly how I feel! I found teenage Becky’s whining grating, and Darlene’s sarcasm hilarious. Now I find Becky’s performances far more grounded and genuine whereas Darlene seems to be missing sincerity.
I don’t know now what happened over the summer, but she got so much better. She went from background to star player at the start of this series.
Thank you for recognizing Lecy. She has definitely stolen every episode… the same way Laurie Metcalf did on the original show all those years ago. And it almost seems like Laurie is approvingly passing on the torch. If “The Conners” doesn’t make it past this season, I hope it opens the door to Lecy getting many more parts in the future.
Eric, I agree wholeheartedly….
She has definitely grown as an actor!
I’m liking Lecy also.
Florence Pugh is quickly becoming one of my favourite actresses. Can’t wait for Fighting With My Family.
She’s gonna be a huge star, if she isn’t already.
Lecy was hilarious. Florence was a powerhouse. Aisha got a nice showcase episode. Also great were Dolly Wells and Brian Tyree Henry is their respective episodes of Room 104 on HBO last night, both so so good.
I agree. Aisha Hinds was amazing this week on 911
While Pugh was very good, I didn’t think Little Drummer Girl could hold a candle to The Night Manager.
I agree. Lecy G. really brought it this week
The cast are all in top form. Don’t Miss Roseanne at all.
Lecy is a bold and unexpected choice which I would have overlooked, but I agree wholeheartedly. That’s why I love this column.
I haven’t watched The Little Drummer Girl yet (my PVR filled up quickly this week, but I caught the reruns today), but I look forward to it.
While 9-1-1 was a little preachy and heavy-handed, I agree that Aisha hinds was amazing, as did Kennth Choi in a more understated yet powerful way.
A good week for television all around.
…as WAS Kenneth Choi…
I just got o 9-1-1 this year and watched all of season one over the last three days. Aisha Hinds has been consistently bringing it, and I loved this “origin story.” I hope they do them for the rest of the cast like they did for Bobby in season one.
Don’t watch Conners but agree Ms. Hinds turned in a Performer -Of -Week effort. Well done !
So glad Lecy got this recognition this week! She has been consistently strong since her return to Roseanne and The Connors. Her comedy chops are seriously impressive.
I hate that Roseanne was fired but it is what it is. I’ve always been a fan of the show so I’m watching The Conners. Really though, Dan, Jackie & Becky are the only reasons I’m still watching. They aren’t doing anything at all with Jackie. Barely doing anything with Dan but I’m liking what they are doing with Becky. I’d be interested in DJ if they actually gave him more than three lines (if that) an episode. I think DJ had more lines in the most recent episode of The Conners than he had all last season. I don’t like DJ’s wife, don’t like this Darlene, don’t like either of her kids. So I’m disappointed in a lot of ways by the show but I’m still watching with no plans of stopping now.
Aisha Hinds is a very talented actress. She commands every scene she performs in. Hopefully, she’ll be rewarded for this “Emmy”
performance!
Lecy was great this week, but I also think that has something to do with the writing, which has been sort of mixed this season with only one real stinker, but this episode found ways to mature Becky and Darlene, and it was immediately refreshing.
Hinds should have gotten the nod a few weeks ago for the earthquake episode, but I’m happy to see her get the credit she deserves for this ep. Hen is my favorite character on this show.
I found 9-1-1 late last season, but when I did, I was hooked. I was a little worried whether this season would be as good, but I have been pleasantly surprised. Last week’s episode that spotlighted Hen was great. If Aisha Hinds could not be the performer of the week, I’m glad she at least got honorable mention. And if Lecy Goranson gave a better performance than Aisha did, I can’t wait to fire up my DVR and watch last week’s episode of The Connors.
I must be in the minority because I think she is a terrible actress this go around. It always feels forced.
