The battle of Lopez vs. Lopez will continue: NBC has renewed the sitcom starring George Lopez and Mayan Lopez for a third season, TVLine has learned. The network has also handed a series order to the Reba McEntire sitcom Happy’s Place.
Season-to-date, Lopez vs. Lopez is averaging 2.3 million total viewers and a 0.3 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), nearly right on par with its Season 1 numbers. Out of the three sitcoms that NBC has aired this TV season, it ranks last behind the already-renewed Night Court‘s second season (3.8 mil/0.4) and the freshman laffer Extended Family (3.2 mil/0.4), which was cancelled on Tuesday as well.
Starring George Lopez and his real-life daughter, Mayan, Lopez vs. Lopez aimed to “put the fun back in dysfunctional family comedy” — though Season 2 brought with it a big life changes for Mayan and the whole Lopez familia, while George took his first step in sobriety.
“So many things in my career have come from real life,” George Lopez told TVLine ahead of Season 2. “I came from a place where alcohol was abused, and then I abused it — but I also abused it around people who didn’t abuse it, and then that’s when it became a bigger and more concerning issue.”
Lopez stands firmly by the choice to tackle such weighty and deeply personal matters on a TV sitcom.
“People say, ‘Hey, man, it’s TV, it’s comedy,’ but [TV episodes] last forever,” Lopez noted, alluding to similar storylines on shows such as Family Ties (where a young Tom Hanks played Alex’s alcoholic uncle). “People say, ‘Oh, you wouldn’t be able to do that today,’ but you can if you want to. If you never push the button, how do you know the button works? If it’s done well, you can get away with it. Or you can not do it and not get away with it.”

So glad to hear this news! I was worried that they might not be renewed as NBC basically did the double episode dump this season that caused this season to feel too short. It’s nice to watch a show that reminds me of family from growing up in latin family.
Give us full seasons
Problem with full seasons for shows with modest ratings is that interest will wane over 22 episodes. At least with 13 episodes you can keep your audience engaged.
Yes, I am so tired of people dropping 8 episodes and calling it as full season. There is a reason people keep streaming old shows (the Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Friends, The Office, etc.)
Yay for Latinos!!
I can’t believe that they renewed this junk of a show that always seems to need anti white jokes for laughs, but they axe Extended Family which is a much better program. Not great, but better than Lopez.
Extended family was a direct result of the strikes as it was greenlit I believe in 2022 and was intially supposed to shoot in 2023 but only got 6 episodes shot before the strike I liked it but it was a victim of the strike and even Mike O’Malley admitted it who I think is a funny gig and has no idea he was the Rick in the espn.com commercials
Season 2 was a huge improvement over the first season. Happy to see this get a season 3 and hopefully a full season at that.
Yeah and her losing her job as a vet probably helped it as those parts of the show just seemed forced and also it picked up in the 2nd half of the first season when they had Danny Trejo when they had so many inside jokes in the beginning and then near the end they got the machete in joke in it was so hilarious and then when they had cheech and Chong on and the in joke where cheech goes don’t I know you to tommy Chong and I think Jamie Jamil was also great in the 2nd half and George clueing in on him that he was just another charming version of him
Yay! This is great news. Lopez vs Lopez being renewed makes me happy. The show has lots of humor and heart. It is the underdog. I root for it.
Easily the worst NBC show but that’s just like my opinion, man.
I personally can’t stand the X wife. She tries to be so sexy. Those too-tight outfits are horrible. Is this how Latino’s want their women to be projected?
His head is GINORMOUS
I can’t believe they cancelled Extended Family, which Qasim atruly funny bd show, and let a boring, contrived show like Lopez vs Lopez stay on. I’ve watched a total of 2 times, and found the acting terrible and obvious.
