The new Mr. & Mrs. Smith will wait to make their introduction until next year.
Prime Video announced Thursday that Donald Glover‘s reimagining of the 2005 film will now arrive in “early 2024.” The series was previously set to debut in November (as revealed in a Prime Day sneak peek shared in July), though an exact premiere date was never disclosed.
Amazon did not provide a reason for the delay, but the postponement comes as the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild continue to strike simultaneously. (The strikes forbid actors and writers from promoting their projects.) Other previously delayed series include Hulu’s A Murder at the End of the World (which was pushed from August to November) and HBO’s True Detective: Night Country (which was pushed from Q4 to 2024.)
From co-creators and executive producers Glover (Swarm, Atlanta) and Francesca Sloane (Atlanta, Fargo), the new Mr. & Mrs. Smith stars Glover as John Smith and Maya Erskine (PEN15) as Jane Smith. The official synopsis reads as follows:
“Meet the Smiths: Two strangers, John and Jane, who have given up their identities to be thrown together as partners — in espionage and in marriage. Matched by a mysterious agency, each episode follows them on a new mission and new milestone in their relationship. When the cracks begin to show through, they must fight to stay together. Because in this marriage, divorce is not an option.”

Translation: At Amazon, we have no idea how long the dual strikes will last, so we’re going to delay release of the stuff in the can as long as possible to make it look like we still have stuff to offer.
Also, we’re not going to offer WGA and SAG what they want because we paid a billion dollars to air NFL games every Thursday.
“reimagining of the 2005 film”
Which itself was a total rip-off of the same-titled 1996 TV series starring Scott Bakula and Maria Bello. It’s a crime that everyone pretends the movie was “original.”
Despite the shared title and somewhat similar premise (bickering spy partners), it’s interesting that there is no official connection between that 90s show and the film, nor has anybody ever filed a lawsuit alleging infringement.
You’re wrong though. They had the same title but that’s it. It was a different story.
Nope. They were both assassins who were initially assigned to kill each other. The only significant difference is that in the series they only pretended to be married, while in the feature they actually were. Good God, he couldn’t even be bothered to change the title.
And nobody sued for the same reason that almost nobody files a plagiarism suit: “You’ll never work in this town again.” The only two who ever pursued this successfully in recent years were Harlan Ellison and Art Buchwald, both of whom were primarily print authors for whom the threat meant little.
